    When I was a kid, one of the first Midnight Specials I ever saw featured Redbone. Come and get your love was the very first song I ever sang all the way through. Loved it from the first time I heard it and I covered it who knows how many times. I lost count! The song and band are still an all time fave and always will be. RIP Lolly.

    Makes me wonder why some native Americans don't like the Washington Redskins name. Native American and light skinned blacks have been called redbone, red and redskin for as long as I can remember and I'm 51 now.

    • @alanchung2843
      @alanchung2843 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      They hate the depiction of Native Americans is the big point not so much the name due to the stereotypical nature of the picture and the fact that Native Americans used to have 100's of diverse tribes.

    • @pjoka2644
      @pjoka2644 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@alanchung2843 really? funny, the coach of the first "red skins" was a Native. Only the "natives" who claim blood but in truth are not dislike the "red skins" other than the Natives who are just ignorant of the truth of the name. Now tell me, what is your native blood since you seem to be willing to speak for the rest of us?

    • @pjoka2644
      @pjoka2644 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Natives don't dislike it. Only those who are ignorant of why they were given that name take issue. When you explain the 'red skins" got their name from a Native coach, they then usually will see that is a credit to a great coach. The Navajo actually support keeping the name. Some people just want to start trouble where their is none. Unfortunately there are a lot of them who wish to use their race, religion, etc...to explain their own abilities.

    • @pjoka2644
      @pjoka2644 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Quite honestly, Redbone is NOT a word EVER used to describe a Native American. It is insulting to refer a Native as a "black light skinned woman". WE have been called Redskins but our skin is not red quite honestly. I have never heard an actual Native care about the name Washington Redskins...they were actually given the name by a Native American coach. Who raises hell about the Redskins name? Mostly NON-NATIVES who don't know crap about the Native Americans. Actually like most of the people on this thread.

    not sure where they came up with a "redbone" has anything to do with Native Americans. It is a term used for a person of African decent with lighter skin, there is also a yellowbone which is an even lighter skinned person of African decent. Also I was under the impression that the members of the band were of Mexican decent, not Native American.

      Hmmm that's very interesting...

    • @AmigoKandu
      @AmigoKandu 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Redbone, also Blackfoot, are terms used in African-American culture going way back, whether the person knew their Native ancestors, or just "looked" like they might be. The actual Blackfoot Tribe is way up on Canada border. So, not many people mixed with them from down south. After Civil War, the Indian tribes that had enslaved Africans had to accept them as tribal members, the Freedmen, under Treaty of 1866. ( Chickasaw Tribe refused ). Then US Govt formed the All Black Cavalry known as Buffalo Soldiers. They worked in campaigns in tribal lands, and often had Indian wives.
      Pat & Lolly knew the small bars on Old Snake Road in West Fresno where many mixed Blacks played blues and other rythms.

    • @AmigoKandu
      @AmigoKandu 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Although Wiki states Lolly was "Yaqui, Shoshone & Mexican" he was named Candido Abelardo Vasquez-Vegas, born in Fresno, Patrick was born 7 years later in Coalinga, not far away.
      Natives in California lost a lot of their culture under Spanish missions, baptism with a Spanish name. Under rule of Mexico 1821 - 1846, they lost good lands to ranchers. Then Calif became US state 1850 and Natives were massacred, a bounty was paid for Native scalps by State of Calif. Many Natives escaped death by mixing in with Mexicans in towns. To be found in wilderness meant death, or enslavement. Yep, there was a slave auction in Los Angeles where both Whites and "Hispanics" could buy Indios Salvages caught in Calif hills.
      So much persecution & danger forced people to hide their Native ancestry. Even though Natives served with honor in WW1, WW2, Korean War, it was the 1960's ( Russel Means of AIM ) that brought Native Identity and Rights into a movement and political focus.
      People wanting to call Pat & Lolly "hispanics, latinos", Mexicans, etc often have no idea of the dark history of California, the genocide by govt and some whites, the cultural assimilation policies of church, govt, and dominant white society.
      People not raised on their tribal lands, without Elders, without Language, without Traditions have their ancestral roots erased.
      Adoption cases make tracing those roots impossible for many adoptees who I have met.
      I've met Pat, briefly. I tend not to hang all over people. I filmed his live singing a few years ago as more of a documentary style, for history.
      It's not What you claim, it's Who Claims You. Pat is at where he is in history by who he is.

      "Redbone" was used Louisiana bayou country. On west side of Fresno, CA used to be Snake Road where some small informal clubs had booze and music by Black musicians, some from the bayou / cajun / creole /afro background.
      The Redbone Band song "Crazy Cajun Cakewalk Band" lyrics mention Snake Road:
      Down Louisiana, close to Mobile, Alabama
      Lies a swamp land territory
      You can ear the bullfrom run into the bog
      I got to pull you under my roof
      Saturday night, I've been feelin' alright
      I'm headed toward the Snake Road hut
      I got a little money, gonna spread some honey
      Gonna get it on all night
      Diggin' that crazy Cajun Cakewalk band
      Crazy Cajun Cakewalk band
      Rhythm is a' heavy as a ton o' lead
      Redbone, baby, is gonna do your head
      Go an' do it to it, let me see ya do it
      Let me see ya do the rawbone shake
      Poppa's got it goin', momma's got it goin'
      Baby sister's had it goin' for years
      Saturday night, I didn't feelin' alright
      Headed toward the Snake Road hut
      Got a little money, gonna spread some honey
      Gonna get it on all night
      Diggin' that crazy Cakewalk band
      Diggin' that crazy Cakewalk band
      Rhythm is a' heavy as a ton o' lead
      Redbone, momma, is gonna do your head
