  • In the follow-on of Episode 9 and the benefits of playing out from the back when restarting play from your goalkeeper, here is a video showing you a pattern practice you can use to reinforce those patterns, skills, and habits that will help your team become comfortable with the process.
I show you how to go from a prescribed technical practice pattern, through the addition of pressure, until you are running a directional rondo that provides your players a very game realistic environment to learn in.

This is great content coach. Im a U9 Coach and we focus a ton on build out od the back and we've lost alot of games against teams that play direct and I've had to keep telling my boys to keep their heads up and some day these skills will pay off. This was last fall. Now in soring we are seeing much improved possession and more goal scoring opportunities. We still lose to some talented direct style teams but our parents, players, and coaches all trust in the system.

That is AMAZING! It's exactly how it should go, because those direct teams - those players will not be equipped for the next level of play - but yours will! My current team does well on the 7v7 field switching through the center backs and even keeper - once the field gets twice as big they will have so much time and space it will be easy for them!
Your parents should know how lucky they are!

We just had a tournament this weekend and while we lost to the eventual champs in the semifinals, it was incredibly obvious who the more skillful players were on the field. Their offensive and defense strategy was boot the ball and we probably came away with 80% of their boots deep. Our boys out possessed, out passed, and out shot them... The only stat they beat us was balls in the net. They won some lucky bounces. There were a lot of tears after the game but we as coaches couldn't be more proud.

That's the way!!! Some days... it's just how it goes. Once they are on the bigger field at 9v9, your team will thank you (well likely they won't but... haha) - because those boot it teams will find out pretty fast that tactic doesn't work when the field is twice as big and they only manage to get it up to the half line... where then you pass it around as they chase you into the ground!

Don’t be perturbed, we have done the same thing, played various teams that focused on goal hanging and getting cheap goals. This takes longer to master but the benefits are massive.
