Watching from my country Belize, the Maroons reminds me of my culture I'm a Garifuna, we have our own clothes, food, language we dance to drums and we celebrate our ancestors n most of all we are peaceful loving caring people
To say that I didn't learn anything here, I would be lying. I first came across an small old book called "Nanny of the Maroons" during my earlier years in the 1960's at Norman Gardens All Age In Kingston. I read that book throughout and became attached to our history in Jamaica. The book dealt with what happened from Portland in the East to Accompong St.Elizabeth in the West. The buck stops when I passed that book onto my siblings because to date no one is able to explained what happened to it. Nevertheless the details of what happened in Nanny Town and the retreat to establish Moore Town still echos those events in mind. There was also the book "History of Jamaica" but that little book: Nanny Of The Maroons depicting the skirmishes of Nanny with the British Red Coats and the grouping up when her brothers and her reluctance to give into some of their conditions upon the Treaty, was forcibly what attracted me to the spirit of Nanny even though having no experience in that village settings as I did with areas of other rural villages in St.Ann where my parents are from. Also, I like in the video when Kromanti Experience used the word "demonize" to adhere to the fight against the language and cultural experiences of the Maroon People. The reason is that many words in the Jamaican language have been replaced with so called British Imperialist flavours that omitted many of the original African words. My hope is that throughout the Maroon Settlements that remains untouched and are still used among the elders with the young. My surprise was hearing my Mother who is now in her eighties dropped a word on me such as "fufu" to mean crushed ground tubers such as yams, coco and others while watching a documentary from Ghana. Actually one of the village people there say the word and she was able to identify with it. Then I asked her why she didn't pass on such rich words to us. And her answers were people particularly those teaching English at Schools in her time would put down or classified using such words as speaking "Bad." In return I was very upset and offended on the strategies used by the Colonialist and their emissaries to ridicule what is ours. I responded to my Mother by encouraging her not to be embarrassed using any of our indigenous words. And to do so as much as she can in preference to English when in dialog and without shame.
I love this! Rochelin you are an absolute blessing to Jamaica's TH-cam space. I learned so much from this video and felt so empowered just hearing more about Queen Nanny!
I believe the name Nanny was a corrupted name. It is actually Nana. Nana is how Asante and other Akan groups in Ghana call the King, chiefs and the aged. That means Nana is used for noble people and the aged
Love the history beautiful,,. Queen nanny was a no nonsense woman i think this is what a lot of young females are missing our history continue the journey Rochielin love it,
Queen Nanny have a special place inna I heart💯. I don’t know how many of us Jamaicans really stop and think of the important part this queen played in our history and what we achieved. She was the epitome of a warrior queen. Brought fear and fyah to the oppressors. One a the great woman to eva walk this earth. Love u queen. Rest well with the rest a the ancestors 👑❤️🖤💚
Love this blog that deals with Jamaican history! True, Suriname has the largest Maroon community. Keep doing these vlogs, Rochielin as they help us to learn about our Black culture.
Yeah! Could be strange but because of my visit to Maroon Town, in 1994, I'm doing all my research about linguistics in Suriname. The connexion Jamaica- Suriname is incredibly rich, culturally and linguistically speaking.
Man, I think I am a descendant of Nanny, because I am one fierce, independent, strong minded, determine, take no crap from people Jamaican woman. Love this blog, very informative..I was taught about Nanny, Paul Bogle and other national Heros when I was grown up in Jamaica.
I love this! Jamaica has such a rich history and culture and being able to experience it and learn it through your efforts is wonderful. Thanks Rochelin🙏🏽
Sister Rochielin! This vlog reach me on a different level. Especially that part about never giving up. I can't say enough how I appreciate this! Thank you from the belly of my soul.
Rochelin is such a vibrant, interesting and inspiring young lady. One of the best videos I have seen. No boredom at all, which is not unusual for many I have watched. I am amazed that you find time to do such a great job with your videos while holding down a job.
Ibrook Ajamu Palmer I don’t remember where I read it but I remember once reading that she was a Queen before being taken to Jamaica and then was captured into slavery.

I am from that heritage but knows very little. Just that my great grandfather's family settled in Brown's Town Liberty Valley and he married my great grandmother who was not a maroon. She was Black and German. Both of their backgrounds is not unusual based on the heritage of the area. Your program is certainly enlightening and thought provoking. Thanks.
Welcome to our maroon culture I hope you all enjoy the tour in Rochielin’s vlog. Bless up to my cousin for keeping the culture living @kromantiexperience. And also a big thank you to @rochielin for choosing this adventurous journey to know more about our culture. We really appreciate you @rochielin for choosing Kromanti Experience Tour.
Cudjoe and Quao of the Maroons eventually signed a treaty with the then British Governor Edward Trelawny in 1739, the Maroons were granted 1500 acres of land in parts of Trelawny parish and Accompong, Akan name Acheampong in St Elizabeth in Jamaica, In that treaty, they got from the British a certain amount of political Autonomy and economic freedoms in exchange for peace and to return any Runaway Slaves, for which the British would pay them, it's is true that the Government of Jamaica still allow the Maroons to maintain their traditional practices and Celebrations, However, it's not true to say that they are fully Independent or Sovereign in Jamaica they're allowed a certain amount of Self Governing, the Jamaican Constitution is the Supreme Law in Jamaica, and all Jamaicans Maroons and Others must Obey that Law, they have to pay taxes, they get to vote, the Government provides Schools and Health Care for them as well as all Jamaicans. this young Lady Rochielin puts out some informational Video's
So, according to the Treaty of Independence, their Peace and Security was/is guaranteed, if they would capture and return any and all runaway slaves. For this they would be paid, this included capturing Paul Bogle, George William Gordon, and who knows how many countless others, in return for Thirty (30) Pieces of silver? Indeed, I must be missing something, but Traitors is all that comes to my mind, and oh, BLOOD MONEY!😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡
