I usually have two opening guesses: ROUTE and NAILS. Together they cover all five vowels and the five most common consonants, so if I can't figure it out on the second guess I find it's a really useful strategy to just use my first two guesses on those :) edit: to the letter Y defenders coming for me - I'd rather have the 5th consonant since there are more of them to eliminate anyway. Y isn't even all that common in 5-letter words so it's fine - in 40 days of continuous play I only missed two words and neither of them had a Y in them lol

there was an addendum to that video, i think it turned out trace/crate were both better (and this other word but it's basically not a word anyone uses ever) - that's only really for the algorithm though, if you're solving it as a real human being it might not necessarily be the best starter because we aren't computing two steps ahead

I do this in my home group, every day
usually getting it the third or second try, got it first try in some cases
I always guess the words "moist", "ready" and "lunch". Usually get the word immediately after I've typed those words in.
