My father was a 5'8" Irishman that weighed 120lbs soaking wet. He used to take me into the bars with him after work, he hustled people, kicking their asses in pool. Several times I saw guys twice his size come at him with a pool que after he relieved them of several hundred dollars and I thought I was going to watch my father die. Next thing I knew the guy would be holding his eyes and nuts while laying on the ground and he would walk up to me and finish his beer. The one thing he would always tell me is; "there is no such thing as a far fight, all that matters is who walks away". Clint reminds me of my father, God rest his wicked Irish soul.

Clint Smith, no doubt a “Colorfully succinct” individual. I have to admit enjoying his approach to training and his colorful commentary. He is a one of kind.
But after listing to him on the 2nd Amendment, the Constitution a little Constitution 101 might be in order.
First, the 2nd Amendment which seems to be a source of confusion not only for Smith but for many in the “Gun rights” world, since they treated as if it’s some Holy Commandment. So, let’s address what the 2nd Amendment actually is and what it isn’t.
The 2nd Amendment is part of the Bill of Rights. The Bill of Rights, as its preamble tells us was added because several States would not ratify the Constitution without it. The preamble also explains that it was to clarify and add restrictions upon the new Federal Government.
“THE Conventions of a number of the States having at the time of their adopting the Constitution, expressed a desire, in order to prevent misconstruction or abuse of its powers, that further declaratory and restrictive clauses should be added: And as extending the ground of public confidence in the Government, will best insure the beneficent ends of its institution.”
“In fact, the Bill of Rights doesn’t give anybody any rights at all. It prohibits the federal government from interfering with rights each individual already has. They should have called the first 10 amendments the “Bill of Restrictions.” It would have eliminated a lot of confusion.” Mike Maharrey
The Second Amendment does not grant any right at all. It recognizes a pre-existing natural right. It is an additional limitation on FEDERAL power to infringe upon our right to keep and bear arms, besides no authority is granted to the federal government in its limited, enumerated powers to infringe upon them in the first place. Even without the 2nd Amendment our right to Keep and Bear Arms still exists.
Now every time a State be it California, Virginia or Oregon introduces new gun control legislation everyone starts screaming 2nd Amendment violation. Not so fast, the Bill of Right was never intended to apply to the States. States in their Sovereign capacity have their own Constitutions. As Chief Justice John Marshall noted in the early 1800’s: “The constitution was ordained and established by the people of the United States for themselves, for their own government, and not for the government of the individual states. Each state established a constitution for itself, and in that constitution, provided such limitations and restrictions on the powers of its particular government, as its judgment dictated…”
So, when your State legislature advances gun control legislation, the controlling document is the State Constitution. Most States do have language similar to the Federal 2nd Amendment, but there are somewhere around 7 States that do not have any protection for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, California is one, no surprise there.
Clint’s quote, when he said before changing the Constitution, read it is a little naïve . All well and good, but just reading it isn’t enough. The meaning of words changes over time. To understand the Constitution, we must go back to what those who ratified it understood it to mean. Read the ratification debates, the Federalist Papers etc.
But if anyone would like a "crash course" in the Constitution I can highly recommend Michael Maharrey's book, "Constitution Owner's Manual - The Real Constitution the Politicians Don't Want You to Know About." It is available on Amazon.

Tim Martin -- Good on you. Also add to your list in 2d to last paragraph, the collected Anti-Federalist essays.
Then I'd say, as an informal student of American governmental history, that you also need to go back to the Articles of Confederation, which was the central authorizing & organizing document effective 1776-1787 (or 1776-1789, depending on which historical view you favor). Which means, of course, that you also have to go back to the Declaration of Independence. All Constitutional provisions flow this way: Declaration of Independence --> Articles of Confederation --> Constitution --> Bill of Rights --> Constitutional Amendments 11-infinity.
I haven't read Maharrey, but I can say that interpretations of the Constitution are always changing and not every law professor or Federal judge (including Supremes) have a neutral, historical perspective in mind. There's a lot of ideological agendas at work among lawyers, law professors and judges, and not all of those people will be candid about their agenda. In fact, most will hide their agenda with every fiber of their being.
The "changing interpretations over time" certainly can be historically perverse. Many of the interpretive changes since 1787 -- including having to add the Bill of Rights in 1789 -- arose due to perversions of the Articles of Confederation and the tensions between individual rights, state powers & rights, and federal powers. Not every modern interpretation of the Constitution is historically honest. Not every SCOTUS ruling is true to the original Constitution's meaning.

Please stop referring it as a "Civil right"!! It is NOT a CIVIL right!! A civil right is one belonging to an individual by virtue of citizenship!
It is an INHERENT (Natural/Fundamental) Right. The founding fathers knew this. Their acknowledgement of this FACT is evidenced in their use of the word "THE", indicating that "THE Right" existed PRIOR to the the writing of the B.O.R. and The Constitution. If we intend to stop the erosion of our Rights by the left's "Death by a thousand cuts" methods we MUST be more precise in our use of tearms! WORDS HAVE A MEANING FOR A REASON! The parasitic hair splitters of the left have been INTENTIONALLY muddying up the meanings of words for more than 100 yrs to be able to legally pick and chip away at the PROTECTIONS the Constitution holds of our Rights! If we continue to allow them to do so they WILL use the Govt to effectively Re-ENSLAVE US!

He’s not wrong. The founding fathers made the original mistake to not free all the slaves. They knew the south would never ratify the constitution so they were stuck between a rock and a hard place. So technically both are right after the civil right laws.

    • @Killianwsh
      @Killianwsh 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mathewmcdonald3657 Respectfully Mr Mcdonald,
The natural Right of an individual to arm themselves for their own defense was recognized, for ALL, by the Founding Fathers. They recognized the Right, but did not CREATE it, as it is a Right bestowed to ALL living creatures by their Creator.
Saying that Civil Rights laws granted slaves the Right to arm and defend themselves is effectively the same as saying that slaves WERE sub-human and had no inherent Rights until their Masters, voluntarily or otherwise, freed them, making them human by doing so and thus worthy of Rights.
This is a VERY dangerous view, as it conveys the power to the Govt. to choose with the stroke of a pen who is ALLOWED to have Rights....and who IS NOT ALLOWED.
The fact that some States refused to recognize slaves and people of color as "people" until later, does not mean they weren't people with natural Rights before those states DECIDED to acknowledge their status and Rights. Civil rights laws did not convey any additional rights. They simply forced the States to apply the protections guaranteed by the Constitution to ALL

I train and was trained the same way, twice by Clint himself. I'm not your buddy or boyfriend. That's why you're being trained by a professional not your buddy or Boy/Girlfriend. I have you anywhere between one day to two weeks. That's not a lot of time to teach you a lot of skills. I use the crawl, walk, run method. When you come to me your a blank slate you know nothing I don't care what you think you know. If you already know what you think you know you don't need me. You first learn your weapon, ammunition, gear. You learn how to take care of your weapon and gear. You learn about ammunition, what type you need for What you want to accomplish. You learn how to zero your weapon. Once you learn this you learn how to hit what your shooting at. Once you master this you learn how to actually fight with your weapon (s) and equipment. Combat isn't the range, the target (s) shoot back while trying not to get shot. Great big difference on the two way range. The philosophy I put deeply in your head is their there to kill you, your there to kill them. Like Clint, I'll say things that will make you laugh and things that will piss you off, that's why you'll remember them down the road. If all you shoot at are paper, steal and clay targets or ducks & deer, you don't need me. If your defending your life you do. Like any martial arts or self defense instructor will tell you, this is a never ending process. You stop learning when you stop breathing. By learning your trying to put that off as long as you can. We don't hate you, if we did we'd never meet. It's our job to train you to stay on that hit parade. Like the Marine Corps motto says, " Let no man's gost ever say, if your training had only done it's job ")

Gun fighting wisdom: I understand that gun fighting is a popular activity, or sport, in your country, and given the number of movies that feature gun fights, it's obviously a source of entertainment as well. However, if wisdom is part of the picture, I wonder if it isn't wiser to choose a state, region, or country where gun fighting is very unlikely to occur?

    • @GunOwnersRadio

Actually, real gun fighting is a very unpopular activity. After taking classes, I learned how horrific a gun fight can be even if you win it.
