    I attended Ascension school. Our family beonged to the parish. I recognize so many places. Ascemsion church was a true work of art. Didn't realize it at the time because I hated going to mass . Very sad. My Aunt Peggy loved Ascension and she even contributed to the restoration fund before she died. I guess time marches on. Thanks Captain.

    I went to church there every Sunday, was Baptized there, went to 1st grade there. It was absolutely beautiful. I remember how shiny the hallways were walking to class. So upsetting to see it now.

    We can’t help but reminisce about the old days and where we grew up because it was so many good times, and kids didn’t have anything to fear because families & neighbors looked out for everyone. My mother was from Philly, and met my father who was in the Navy and was temporarily docked in the Philadelphia port sometime around World War II. My church parish was MBS, Most Sacred Heart back in the 40’s and 50’s. My family moved in the late 50’s after my Grandmom died, and my parents had an understanding that they would move to my father’s home state of Florida. Thank you for the video!

    You almost forget you're in Kensington seeing this street. It still looks well kept. It always makes me sad to see how these neighborhoods deteriorate. Same thing happened in my parents area in Brooklyn. It's sad. My fiance is from South Philly ( 2ndstreet Irish area)and his neighborhood isn't even the same and many are leaving because of it. It's sad.

      The 600 block of Willard has a lot of people who have lived there for over 40 years. Kensington has quite a few nice blocks.

      @A.J. Fisher really? Bc I lived in that section of South Philly for years (2300 block of South Front St between Rittner n Wolf) and it was nice, no trash no shinanigins everybody was cool w each other but I had to move a cpl yrs ago when I got happily divorced so idk how it's looking these days 🤷

    I'll tell you this much. You have balls walking around there. My dad uncles and Grandmon and aunt grew up at 608 east Westmoreland street. My Aunt lived there until her passing in 2021. My dad was an alter boy at Ascension. And I attended mass there in the lower lever early 80s. I remember going under the El and shopping with my grandmother. I remember cocoas pizza. Things were way different back then.id love to walk around looking at the old places. I want to survive though. My dad also worked at the mansion that is now a funeral home. I also would sleep over when it was just my Aunt and cousin there when she would take me to see the Wwf at the spectrum mid 80s. My dad has pictures of Jfk in his open limo going past Ascension. He took pictures from the balcony.

    The architecture of Ascension Church is incredible, it's like straight out from Tuscany. I'm not religious but I get angry at what has happened to so many of this city's beautiful and unique churches. In any city in Europe, to allow an artistic achievement like Ascension Church to decay would be criminal.

    • @ThePhillyCaptain
      @ThePhillyCaptain  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The city has a lot of empty churches now. I do not know what the plan will be with them going forward. I am not religious and this church meant a lot to me. I feel someone needs to tear it down. Its dangerous and bad things happen in it. I feel bad for children that live near it.

    the corner store at 0:36 was lous corner store and butcher. I remember buying smokes for my mom when i was a kid. I remember cocos pizza, and the street fighter arcade game inside. I grew up on 3300 block of gransback. Born in 85, so the 90s is kensington is what i remember most. I was baptised at ascension, received my ccd and holy communion there. My parents were also married there. I came across this video reading up on the guy who jumped from the steaple and killed himself....sad.

    Great video. I lived on cornwall between E and F sts. Born in 1950 I remember all the shops. The store you were not sure of was a Unity Frankford store owned by the Sigmund family. On the other side of Hartville was a butcher shop that gave me the chicken foot when my Mother bought a chicken. by push and pulling on the leg bones you could open and close the foot. At E and westmoreland the store on the side you are standing on was Golds Pharmacy and opposite was BIll the Butcher. Go down a block on Westmoreland opposite Ascension was Wanda's gift shop. It was a great little neighborhood . thank you for the memories. Before Mr. Cocos it was a Bakery.

I went to Sheridan elementary. The area use to be really nice with many corner stores. Campbell's Mansion use to be right next to Ascension. Use to play stick, step and box ball and was in the ice shows at Scanlon playground. Those days are just a memory.

    Haven't been back to Ascension or my grandparents' house in more than 30 years. Grandparents lived on East Russell St. They both passed in 1985/1986. The street looks like a warzone and their house is all covered up with metalwork and the porch is packed with junk. It's a disgrace. Back then, people took pride in their neighborhood.
