I think those plastic pieces are used to keep the hook from slipping through the bait like you were experiencing. Peirce the plastic piece perpendicular through the bait to prevent the hook from dropping through the gap. Also, rig the bait further up the twistlock so it wont fall off. I agree the price point is high, but there was some user error. Great video either way! I was always curious about the bait, but didn't want to drop $25 on a soft plastic.
Just a little helpful hack… Mend-It lure glue works very well on any plastic swim bait that has tears. I’ve used it on DOA, NLBN, Gambler, and other soft baits. It will definitely extend the life of your swimbait rotation.
I could see that helping but sort of just like a band aid. I feel like that section is going to tear very easily again and again. I’ll try to repair it and fish it again in the future.
I’m with Vince. I fish big soft plastic swimbaits and use the mend it. And you’re right Justin- I bet it will work, but that hook area is really thin. Kind of lame. I always wondered when I watched your show if a gambler GZ would work well for you. I bet it would. Maybe next test?
@jamjam9930 IMO nlbn is the biggest scam in fishing! Same action as any other bait that size and no where near as tough as zman...I just don't get it!....I guess it's just like the salt strong stuff amazing marketing, aimed at people who don't know any better
You need to use the nose anchors (1 vertical, 1 horizontal as per the website instructions, there is a nice diagram on there) you’ll have a much better experience. And they are like 12$ now.
I’ve never used them at all but have seen them before but maybe a tip you could use or do is maybe make it a line thru after the belly opens up because theirs still the end part of the plastic so yeah but anyways great video man
Great video. One thing you can try that I have done is add some glue when putting the twist lock. Also the nose locks are supposed to push in around the twist lock so it don’t pull out. Not sure how well they work
I Think you might be setting the hook a little too fast. It's an 8 inch bait so you might need to count a couple seconds before you set the hook to get a good hook up ratio. The Z man swimmerz are also a good option when you are looking for durability and they do come in an 8 inch size

definitely bury the hook, and slide the bkk stopper to the top of the hook bend so the ladyfingers rides straight....I have found that the bkk swimbait hooks with the weight adapter on the shank works the best...i will say that it's one of my favorite giant snook baits, but make sure you use at least 50lb fluro leader....and don't be surprised if that's not enough...it is a expensive piece of lip jewelry...lost one today on 80lb....ouchy
I may have to buy just one. My luck I catch 1 jack on it. I think you should test the gambler big ez 8” in a mullet color on those same fish for your next lure review. I caught some giant snook on those.
I just found out as well those plastic nose anchor pieces are used after your screw the bait in you shove it in through the screw and it locked it in so it can’t fall off
Just get some Mend-it bait glue for those baits, and you can get a lot more life out of them. You can glue that area that ripped out and made the hole, and make the baits almost as good as the are when you first take them out. Also replace the bait screw wit some better musky style bait screws. The ones on those hooks look like they are way too weak to be used on even small bass baits. You could also rig it like a Mr. Whiggly swimmer, a bait that was designed and made by Larry Dahlberg. To rig it that way you would rig a good musky grade bait screw and then run either a steel leader or a good heavy fluorocarbon leader (we use 150 lb for ours) thru it to a nice big treble hook. It might not be weedless, but you won't miss fish, and they can't use the bait as leverage rigging it that way. ;) I am going to buy a few to try out since the price on them has come down quite a bit. Great review video by the way, keep up the good work.
Great video. Wonder how the Zman Mag swim would compare? Not as much detail, but same size and would stay on the hook longer. Caught some nice snook off the beach using those Mag swims. Plus you can get a pack of three for 1/3 the price
Just a tip on the little plastic pieces in the package there meant to go in the bait near the screw lock on the hook to keep the bait from ripping off the screw lock but. when putting them in just put one of them on one side and then just a behind the first one u put in you insert the second one in on the other side.
Good vid Justin, nice to see an unbiased review, using your own cash! I finally got a few packs of mini mullets, but NLBN was out of stock on the 2/0 BKK Titan Rider hooks. I have some weighted 3/0 wide bend screw lock hooks. Do you think a bigger hook would work, and will the 1/8 oz. weight hurt the action? I did find some off-brand 2/0 widebend hooks on Amazon, both weighted and unweighted. What are your thoughts on hooks? Thanks for your opinion.
Justin excited to watch this and see what you where able to do with the f13 fishing list fish. Got their mullet to. Have not had a min to use it on the bay. But tried their smaller 4.25 ones so far

Great video! I bought this but haven't used it yet. I live over over on the west side by Boca Grand Pass and the El Jobean peer is money for baits like this! I would 100% leave the hook exposed.
Hey bro not to be that guy but I think your lure might have slid off cause of the hook breaking. If you watch the play back your twist lock is gone when you brought the hook back in so maybe it wasn’t the plastic just a faulty twist lock? Either way cool vid!
Ok, for the record that was not the lures fault, the hook broke and had nothing to do with the lure falling off. But I’d have to agree pretty sick lure but not worth the price
Try taking mend it and gluing the open slots together maybe? The bait is poorly designed in that area. Slit on the bottom 1/3 up from belly to back then solid the other 2/3 from midsection to back would solve the problem. Still even then it's a 12 to 14 dollar bait at most, and it doesn't come pre-rigged. Love the videos and the lure reviews are always awesome. Tight lines bro
Those plastic pins in the pack can be used to keep the hook in place. That’s what I personally do, and it does help. Just go through the back and the shank will lay on top of the pin
@@justin_menendez for me they didn’t but if it does another way that would work is use a tooth pick and trim the ends out if the plastic doesn’t hold up

Been fishing these baits since the release. I have hung a couple fish. Big problem price and hook up ratio. The plastic is very dense so the hook dose not stick them. The mullet one is pretty sick also same issues. Great looking bait but to much money.
Just an Idea, try Texas Rigging that lure bringing the Barb into it from the Top of the Head and then down and out under the chin. Turn it over for the Barb to go into the slot. Now the BARB will come UP and OUT to hook the fish when you set on it vs using a Nose Screw and having the barb pull horizontally into the body of the Lure. Plus the Thicker Head Plastic/Silicone will be on the SHANK of the Hook itself. Better chance of the Lure not coming off the hook this way.
I saw a trick where they put a tooth pick through the swim bait right under the hook so it doesn’t pop out but idk how reliable it would be and shouldn’t have to be done.
