O P Nayyar was no doubt a very good music director. His career began around 1952 and his first major hit was in 1956 (CID). Rafi was already an established singer by the time Nayyar began his career and had given classical hits in Baiju Bawra, released in 1952. To say that Nayyar taught him to give right expression and dynamics is an insult not only to Rafi but to other composers like Naushad, Shankar Jaikishen, Madan Mohan etc. This statement is ridiculous.
Though Md. Rafi had been an established singer by the time O.P. Nayyar got recognition, this song itself is just a sample to show what a best quality Nayyar saab could draw from singers.
Watched first day first show with my boyfriend (now husband) in Delhi. I went there for my engagement, can't believe 55 years passed away.

I remember listening this song for the first time while waiting for a bus around 30 years ago in a small village in Kerala. The song was coming from a tea shop from a radio ( an old one at that). Because of the old age of the radio, the song kept breaking and I was fascinated by the song ( strangely, the breaking of the radio added to surreal beauty of the song). I was secretly wishing the bus shouldn't come till the song is completed. The bus came in just before the song finished and I heard till the the end of the song as everyone boarded( I think I boarded last deliberately). I didnt know which song this was. But the words 'jisne tumhe banaya'....' was always in my mind. For my teenage mind the meaning did not make much sense at that time I found this song possibly 10 years later because of the words. But I must admit i still love listening to this song from that old radio.

No song can be expected to achieve immortality without a soulful tune, a meaningful lyric and a captivating voice.Yes, Shammi ji himself had said that Rafi ji used to have done 50% work of the hero with his mesmerizing and stylish voice. Notice the wonderful identity of voice and action here. Notice also the stress on the single word, "tareef" that immensely adds beauty to the song. It was done on recommendation of Rafi saab as reported. An unwilling Nair later embraced Shammiji for the phenomenal success of the song. Thus, the combination became historic.
