Nah, the other shovel seems nice but if you walked away thinking it was the better option you watched a different video than me. I do like the system though.

I would depend on the Cold Steel shovel. I have never seen a screw together aluminum tube handle that does not eventually work loose, and bugger the threads.lots of gadgets in the new one but, I think if I was in survival mode, I would take the Cold Steel. Attache a fire steel to the sheath. One other thing you didn't mention if the shovelhead itself on the new was aluminium, stainless or carbon steel. The Cold Steel is Carbon Steel and is what most impact tools use for toughness.

I prefer the cold steel. I like my tools to simply excel at the few tasks they are made for. I'll carry a separate fire steel and survival gear.
Old-school is better
I'm a diehard Cold Steel Spetznaz Shovel fan; robust, simple, reliable, sharp, and far fewer potential failure points. It does what it was designed to do. Made it a point to have one on my pack for the past 15+ years.
Cold Steel has got to be the winner.
I've owned the Cold Steel shovel since they first came out.
I can't speak on its competitor since I've never owned one.
But I would most definitely choose the Cold Steel because I've put mine through all kinds of stuff and its never failed me.
I lost my first one when my house burned, someone stole one out of my truck once and I lost another when my house got robbed.
I promptly replaced it every time because it's so useful.
If I could choose only one survival tool it would probably be a good fixed blade knife. But if I could pick two my Cold Steel shovel would definitely be the other. And to be honest I'd have to really think about it because I think the shovel may actually be more useful depending on the situation.

I prefer mine over an ax, even. Its more versatile, and chops everything I need it to chop pretty much the same.
i hear you but a knife cant dig a hole unless its an Ontario sp8 - the cold steel shovel and Ontario sp8 would be the perfect urban disaster combination every thing including a pry bar which the sp8 can fill in for
Cold Steel all day long had one for years aside from the vast cost difference it has the weight for chopping the durability for extremely hard use take one screw out chop down a longer branch and make a long handle if want I've used it for chopping down trees the weight of the head really makes it great and cutting off the limbs and the edge stays through extreme abuse and it's a wonderful thrower for fun

Cold Steel the winner for me too. I love the rugged simplicity. The other offering is just a compromised gadget for idiots, that does nothing particularly well.
If you manage to break a Cold Steel wooden handle somehow ( probably axe throwing it! ) you could whittle up a new one in the woods quickly enough.

I would actually trust the cold steel in a survival situation. I have one and love it. The other one looks like it's more likely to break with longer term use. Definitely prefer the tools I trust.

My CS shovel and sheath were delivered today - It's an absolute beast! The metal is a lot thicker than I anticipated, and seems like it is indestructible.

That shovel is a spear with a handle in the back to get some real good leverage. Bad Guy: I thought that dude with a shovel was hilarious till he speared Casanova Frankenstein through the chest instead of hitting him with it.

I think it depends on the individual's purpose for it. No doubt the cold steel one is stronger, so if you break stuff because you don't use it as intended, get the cold steel. If however, you're like me and use shovels for digging and saws and axes for cutting, get the more well rounded tool that packs easily and can do more things. Hell get them both!
I break stuff while using it as intended. Most stuff in a commercial kitchen is apparently made for average women.

As a short term survival shovel the fancy one wins, but what if the handle breaks? You can’t fabricate a new threaded handle, but you can carve a wooden one for the old one. Plus you can use it as a tomahawk, and is generally more sturdy, and so is better for long term survival
I had to have a ditch dug for our home sewer, long story short, tree roots and rock nightmare. The ditch witch wouldn't go through parts, I used spudbars shovels etc. The cold steel shovel out worked all other tools in that event with the help of a estwing 14 inch hatchet. Two of the best home tools I own.

I've always been wary of hollow-handled tools, but this IUNIO appears to be pretty solid. As for a winner? I think they're two completely different tools and won wins for sheer grunt (the Coldsteel) and the other wins for versatility. Both also have their weaknesses.
I have several of Iunio shovels and the hatchet. I keep the small shovel and the hatchet in my Wrangler for off-roading. Great tools!
So that survival shovel performed way better than I expected! I vote Survival Shovel the winner! It's almost apples and oranges like a fixed blade vs a folder but for the versatility that seems to be way more than just a gimmick, it gets my vote.
Cold steel for the win for me. Although in the uk we have no real usable situations due to lack of wilderness these days. Wish we had the expanses you do.

I'll take the cold steel shovel. Durability, chopping power, and for shoveling it's dependable. The survival shovel may be lighter, but storing stuff isn't what I need it for.
I bought a cold steel shovel after watching Alone, and discovering your channel, and I wrapped the handle in paracord!
And this is why I subscribed lol shovels and appreciation to the slingshot. Been looking into getting that same shovel which lead me back here. nice!

Well, I have used full metal folding Swedish army showel for that, not sure how smart it would be to use Russian one with wood handle.

I never did, because it's painted and i dont want to cook paint into my food.
However, i have a CS shovel that I use for most of my fire management duties. It chops, moves coals around, and I use it to bury my left over coals once the fire is ready to be put out too.
If you are going to war take the cold steel. If your camping take the folding shovel. Depends on how far you have to carry them lol!

My cold steel shovel arrived today, I love this little beast, as soon as I felt it I could tell this is a piece of kit I won’t have to replace for a very long time if ever.
I use the coldsteel myself been a trusted sidekick , but I can also see the benefits of the other one , great video!

I like them both as they both can do their thing they are designed for, but the one that you was using I like the best as you can add so much to it that is all you need to have with you.

Though you can't start a fire from the contents within the handle, I would still prefer the one with a wooden handle. If the handle ever broke...you can make a replacement.
It’s weird how things like matches and flint and steel are carried around. Matches are kinda ok but flint and steel is one of the worst options. Just carry a bic mini lighter.
I've had the cold steel since season 3. I feel like the things I like about the other shovel I have in my other gear. I left my issued Gerber at home for the cold weather course a few years ago. Wow! I will always carry that shovel.
On one hand I love the versatility and capability of the IUNIO. I think it's the winner as a all in all survival tool. However, there is something to be said about simplicity. As far as a shovel goes, I feel like the cold steel wins. As for me? I'm going to buy both lol.

Cold steel shovel all the way.. If the handle breaks you can make another out of a good branch. Other shovel if you break the handle/hinge your basically out of your tool. Remeber K. I. S. S. That should be the basic rule for survival and a tool like that.

I'd go with the old school shovel, mostly for the fact that I could replace the handle in the field if it broke. I saw on your website that there are dates listed for this coming weekend for the 2019 New England Bushcraft Expo. I can't find any info on it, though. No info on EventBrite about tickets or anything. Do you know any of the specifics?

I like the US Army shovel I used to have. It had a wooden handle a little longer than the cold steel, and 3 position head like the other one. No loose parts to get lost.
The Iunio is neat for sure, but with all those interchangeable parts it's just not as structuraly solid as the Cold Steel. That thing could last several lifetimes.

Yea cold steel is Taiwan. They take much more pride in manufacturing then main land China... shoot all the best electronics get manufactured in Taiwan even Nintendo manufacturers the switch there... shoot the $1800 graphics cards in my pc was made there.... but I still have a hard time choosing between the cold steel special forces shovel or the condor survival shovel.

I’d say they are both really good for their own things. The cold steel is more simple and classic. While the iunio has more gimmicks and can do more stuff than the cold steel.

The main idea of cold steel shovel is to walk with it and dig if needed, that is why it is so small. But as I know you in America do not walk, you always drive cars, so you need a bigger and longer shovel, some about 4 feet long, designed to be stored in vehicle.
I'd think it's more or less the Cold Steel all the way. I'm not going to be USING my shovel to cut hanging ropes or section water bottles, but I will probably use it for digging and prying. And the Cold Steel is an excellent, long-lived, extremely-strong design that has nothing at all to go wrong with it. If I had to trust one heavily, it'd be the Cold Steel all the way. The novelty of the survival shovel is pretty good, but there's just too damn many things there to go wrong or break by comparison.
cold steel can take a beating, i would not count on the other for a survival situation, may be for a weekend trip yes

I would trust the old one more, it also performed at least as good. It lacks the space inside it that is a big plus but still on shovel duty the old one is great

Cold steel...you could add a piece of flint steel in the end if you need the ability to make fire with tour shovel and the handel being wood is replaceable in the field

Overall I think it came down to both the technique, the shovels head shape, and the stamina of both participants. The trenching shovel is made to 1: be able to dig. 2: be able to fight. 3: be able to chop through roots. 4: be durable. The more modern survival shovel is made to be 1: light. 2: cheap. 3: be able to have more functions. 4: be a sharp shovel. But maybe one day we will get a redesign of them. Maybe someone will make a steel shovel with the head of the first on a solid body that can store a ferro rod and some other stuff.
Bought the shovel in your Amazon page (not the cold steel one) and after one night out in the rain it ended up so rusted it was basically useless

I’d say both have their place. I like the concept of the survival shovel and defense plan on getting one although my fear for that one is all the points of failure it risks. The hinge for the shovel and each spot that screws together is all a risk. In a pinch though I’m sure both would save someone’s ass

Just add a compartment to the wooden shovel to accommodate other tools. Not too hard. Just some metal or pvc and a bolt or screw.
I bought the Cold Steel because of you. I bet you could cut a saw-side on the Cold Steel. Also, if you felt really hack'ish, you could drill out room for a ferro rod in the end. But why bother? It performs fantastically, is relatively inexpensive and doesnt weight a lot.
Old School wins. Oh yeah, and I would not like to use a metal-handle axe for very long. Nice comparison.

I think the modular shovel would be really good for vehicle use. When you probably won't have your full kit with you, this gives you a shovel, knife, fire starter, compass, flashlight, some tools......
But for backpacking or bug out, I will take the Cold Steel Special Forces Shovel or the my favorite, the Condor Camping Shovel. As I will have the rest of my kit with me and I don't like to have all my kit together in one item.
The Condor Camping Shovel I think is superior to the Cold Steel shovel.

It's strong and easy to use
I don't know, the IUNIO has multiple moving parts, which I don't trust. Sooner or later something's gonna break, and then what happens? The only thing that's gonna break on the Cold Steel would be the handle, and you can fix that with a piece of wood and an hour of carving. Tougher, better balanced for both chopping and throwing, plus you can use it as a skillet as well (I'd really like to see you do a video on that!) The only advantages for the IUNIO that I can see is that you can carry several other tools inside, and that you can configure it with a longer handle. But the extra tools don't seem to be any better than your normal EDC, and that's what you've got pockets for, right? And if you really need a longer handle, you can carve one and swap it out with the Cold Steel. And maybe even use that handle for a walking staff?
By the way, slowing down the parts where you guys where trying to cut the hanging rope and chop the wood, I think the problem was that you weren't keeping the blade level when you swung. Seriously, it looked like you were as much as 30 degrees off on some of those strokes!

Yeah CS Spetznaz wins. Nobody really expected anything else. The "Survival Shovel" is a nifty tool but I get why Fowler decided not to choose a winner. It isnt garbage but it is not as robust.
