How to Scrap a Dishwasher for Copper, Brass, and Steel.

  • Scrapping a dishwasher. Did you know there is silver gold and palladium in there? OK, so its only trace amounts, and its covered in spray on rubber and almost impossible to get off....but at least there is some copper brass and steel and wire......Is it worth the effort? Many say no, I say if you have a plastics recycling facility in your area, why not take them for the motor! This took me a good 20 minutes to break down.

    I always watch the ads all the way thru so you will get that truck that much sooner. Before I had my truck I had a Volvo station wagon, which always had the back seats folded down & I used it like a truck. Great Video by the way!

    been scrapping for about 5 months now! I have collected about 14 lbs of copper so far not to mention other goodies. I checked this video cause my neighbor just asked if I wanted his old dishwasher. I just may take it now. This has been a really big addiction for me since I started. Good video. Made me change my mind on not taking the diswasher.

    I picked up a stainless steel dishwasher today...my first. Heaps of copper, with the power cord, wire, and motor. I also picked up a microwave oven to scrap, that some drongo cut the cord off.... only to find when I got home, there was stench and rotting something in the oven. I did a basic scrap of the motor and wire, boards etc...left the turning motor on the bottom and threw it in the back of the ute to take to the scrap yard with everything else.

    he once again a great vid. I have done a lot of whiteware recycling. most whiteware will have a self diagnostic code so you can pin point the fault using fault codes with this knowledge they are easy to fix or sell the parts barring the faulty one . I sell the front touch panel as is where to local white ware shops or just drop of parts for free in return I get their unwanted units. these earn good money and normally in high demand
    front control panel, pump, motor, motor control unit,

For me better cash return on washing machines and stoves are a cash chow. From what I have learnt here in New Zealand is in the usa dish washers the double door ones by fisher and paykel have a high break down rate the control units in these may offer good return from a 2nd hand shop. unsure

    Well, a few things there. The motor in this dishwasher has more cast Aluminum than cast iron, 40cents vs 5cents per lb. Motors are going most places for 22-28 cents per lb. In the larger electric motors from appliances etc, it will pay more to take them apart. Even the smaller ones will pay more. The problem is that the small they are the more time it takes and your income per hour drops fast. There are only a few types I don't take apart. Thanks!

    I've wondered whether it is worth taking a motor apart to sell as wire and cast iron.
    Someone told me a while back that motors sold for about 12 cents per lb. It would make more sense to split into copper and cast iron; because wire is about 18 TIMES per lb what that motor would be; so even if you lose a little poundage by splitting it up; I still think it's worth it, IFF it doesn't take up too much of your time.

    Yeah I know right? I've thought about trying to sell it on ebay....Flat rate boxes cant hold more than 70lbs, so I could concieveably fit $28 bucks worth in a box, but then the shipping would be $11, and there would have to be a lower price so taht people would find it worth buying, does not leave much wiggle room. I probably get rid of 100-200 lbs a week of stainless......at 5 cents/lb =(

      Ads on craigslist, I have a video on ads. If you are looking to just get wire, try making friends with some electricians otherwise look for people doingmajor rennovations to older homes. I just got a few hundred lbs from a person who was cleaning out their fathers home who was a master electrician. He had spools upon spools of all kinds of wire.

    • @moosescrapper5928
      @moosescrapper5928  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi and thanks for watching! I actually have a video coming out very soon about stripping cable wire! The sheilding net like wire is tin coated copper, in most cases (#2 copper) and in some cases, particularly the older stuff its #1 copper. Aluminum wire is often not worth stripping unless its very thick, like 1/2 inch or more. Check with your scrap yard and see what they are paying for the wire vs the aluminum. Best of luck!

    • @dr.a006
      @dr.a006 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Moose Scrapper thanks for the thorough videos. When I came across several CRT TVs, a couple had aluminum degaussing wires and yokes, also had a couple old light ballasts that had aluminum wire. The scrap yard at the time gave me about $0.51 or more for the high grade aluminum wire, I was surprised it was worth more than the other Aluminum items: cast, sheet, cans, extruded which were about .38-.42 at the time.

    having said that dish washers are the worst for breaking down. washers will bring in good money in parts....stoves are so easy to fix its a joke and you can really cream good money from those units.

    u only get around 17 oz of number 2 copper out of that motor so at 2.08 a pound for copper its a waste to do....mainly due to the amount of work to get the copper out of the moter

      if you spent a good hour and completely took it apart, $5 ish. Lately I just pull the visible wires, motor, and any brass or stainless steel off and drop the rest off as is.

    holy sh*t dood I just picked up one of these from a trash pile. Not worth it. The large motor is aluminum and the frame is welded together. I been smashing at it with a sledgehammer. I can't quit now that I started.
    So moose guy what is the heating element made of? its not ferrous. I don't think I'm going to try one of these again.
