硬币(The Coin)
Directed by Siqi Song
songsiqi.com/th...
"Following the success of her award-winning, Oscar-nominated film 妹妹 (Sister), Siqi Song returns to S/W with another short brimming with cultural insight, family traditions and of course, that recognisable stop-motion style. Where her previous film focused on what it was like to grow up with a sibling during the height of China’s One-Child Policy, her latest short 硬币(The Coin) centres around her family’s New Year’s Eve tradition and the comforting thought of home, when you’re far from it.
On Chinese New Year, finding the coin hidden in a dumpling (Jiaozi) brings good luck. In The Coin, we follow a girl and her jar of lucky coins as they leave home and journey to a new country. After leaving her collection of charmed currency on a train in her new homeland, the girl starts to suffer from unsettling feelings in her stomach, is this anxiety? Homesickness? Or something else?
“After moving to the United States a few years ago, I experienced all sorts of culture shocks”, Song explains as we discuss the inspiration behind The Coin. “With my mind experiencing the same digestive problems as my stomach, as it encounters the exotic food, I find myself looking for familiar food, in the hope that it will bring me back to the moment of comfort when I found the coin in it. This thought gave me the idea to use food as the visual representation of the story I want to convey, a story about trying to connect with the past in order to move on”.
Just shy of seven minutes in length, despite the plot appearing somewhat thin on surface level, The Coin manages to pack a lot into its tight run-time. Through a simple story of a young woman leaving her childhood home, Song manages to pepper her narrative with family history, cultural traditions, personal insight and relatable emotions. Again, there’s surprising depth for a tale of a girl and a jar of coins.
With the success of its narrative debatable (these things are always subjective), one thing that surely isn’t under question is the strength of the craft showcased in The Coin. Though we’ve seen this woolly stop-motion style several times before - Emma De Swaef and Marc James Roels’ Oh Willy… feeling like the real prototype for the style - Song laces her aesthetic with enough individual flair (having the facial expressions of her characters added with hand-drawn animation really amplifies their reactions and emotions) and standout moments (the woolly soup and giant burger are particular favourites of mine) to make it her own." - S/W Curator Rob Munday

this was absolutely amazing. i believe the coin is a symbol of culture so when she lost the jar of coins it represents her ‘leaving behind’ her old traditions only to then realize that the coin (culture) will always be within her.
I like your interpretation.
Perfect interpretation!
omg thanks for the interpretation!
the way i see it, she’s moving away from her home. the coins not only represented good luck for the future she wanted, but her family & the home life & routines she’s leaving behind. she brought the coins with her as a reminder, but she left them on the train. in dismay, she struggles to identify with the fast food world when she was used to home cooked meal traditions, but eventually finds safety in knowing that the coins and her heritage will never leave her.
i thINK. idk.
That’s good
True
Monig buitifu
Yes👍
Its the first time I have seen felting used this way in a stop motion, really liked the way you did this.
The foodie in me is obsessed with this short!
So even though she lost all the coins,in a way they're always with her?
that’s what i think! the good fortune was not lost even though the coins were :)
wasn’t she afraid of choking on the coin?
I personally would be paranoid about biting down and breaking a tooth!
I bet when she was younger she accidentally ate a coin that her mom put in her food then she left all the coins in the jar on the train then she freaked out then realized that the coins with always be with her
Okay but when she was chopping those onions and garlic, that was so satisfying lol great animation
this is such a lovely short! the good fortune was with her all along
How sweet and very clever animation. Good Luck for 2022
Doesn't it make you feel all warm and fuzzy?
So creative and awesome!! Thank you fir enlightening me ✌🏾
THIS SHORT MADE ME FEEL *"WARM AND FUZZY"* ALL THE WAY THROUGH, ESPECIALLY WHEN SHE WAS PREPPING...GREAT ASMR ❤
It’s not the coins that gave her good fortune, it was the idea that the coins did that gave her success
She could have just kept the coins inside the suitcase. Simple :)
Stop motion was so so awesome ❤️ it.
Glad Siqi is back. I love his felt animated shorts. They are brilliant. I need to watch it again to understand the meaning, first time I just love watching the art stop animation

I find this racist against cheeseburgers. They are popular around the whole world mind you not just the western United States. Really popular in Korea.
Nice en well made stop motion story
behind the scenes plz
System is eating you!
Wait did she eat the coin?
So cool 😍
Well that was interesting
Loved the filming, but the story made no sense
the coins represented not only good fortune, but also traditions and family, which is why she took them with her- to remind her of home. so when she loses them on the train she panics and despairs, struggling to embrace her new life (perhaps she emigrated to america, thus the burgers and palm trees) and instead searching for reminders of home (her looking for 'coins' in other round foods). her finding a coin in her stomach is realising that home and her heritage never left her but were within herself all along
@@evannalee4108 thank you. Makes more sense now

Where can I watch 'sister' short film? I can't find it
After its promotional run in advance of last year's Oscars, "Sister" came down from free streaming due to distribution arrangements. It's available on various VOD platforms however, here's a link to it on Vimeo On Demand: vimeo.com/ondemand/sisterbysiqisong/380460435
