- I just got the Line 6 Helix and I'm loving it! Here are the presets I'll be using with Blue Oyster Cult.
These presets are available for download here: line6.com/custo...

As requested, I've uploaded the presets. line6.com/customtone/profile/RichieCastellano/
Many thanks for that, really appreciated!
Richie Castellano fellow staten islander here, any suggestions on which output gives best quality into my DAW? Xlr into my interface, USB or spidf?
I use 1/4 inch. I can't hear much of a difference between the outputs.
I hope Line 6 has contacted you, I've never heard a bad tone from you. And even better, the way you show, explain things is just SO simple to understand.. Respect Mr. Castello. Have a great day!
Thomas Pedersen thanks! The folks at Line 6 have been very supportive. I'm loving the Helix and the whole community around it. It's nice to see people helping each other.
Really appreciate you taking the time to share your knowledge! I just purchased a Helix and find it a bit overwhelming at first, but your videos answer many questions and provide tips on features I wasn’t aware of or didn’t understand. Thanks Richie!
Even though this video was from a few years in the past it’s always nice to see someone at your level of ability and success to get into a few of the patches and discover how it works. I’ve enjoyed a measured level of success with the unit and have been very pleased with the results I’ve gotten to this point. I’m trying my best to maintain a positive balance of success. Thus far I’ve been able to do that. I don’t want anything such as cost or language to be a barrier to overcome. To me, music and math are the only 2 barrier-free "languages" that I can think of but I haven’t exactly put my 🧠 through a hard, taxing process. Still, I can’t come up with anything else from the depth of my brain pan, which is a shallow pool at best to be sure! 😂. If you’re on the hunt for custom tones for the Helix, happy hunting! I’m always on the lookout. You others, you may want to consider it as a viable option for effects processing. What I’ve done has been with little effort and great results, the American way!!!! It’s a very strong effects processor. Imagine having to go out and purchase the individual pedals that are put to use in this machine, wire them properly and get a great final product/result in the end. What if you employed 2 of the same pedal? The opportunities are not endless but are infinitely better. That’s my sales pitch. Good luck. 🖖🤘😎 Live long and rock your ass off!
Thanks for taking time out to share this with us. Very useful information explained very well. The best demo of the Helix I have seen.
Hey Richie, those presets are absolutely fantastic!! I love it. I wish you continued success in your guitar playing.
Hey man, just saw you guys the other day. I'm an axe fx snob and I was beyond impressed with the tones you got. I got near the stage and was super surprised to see you were using a Helix. Sound truly lies in the hands of the user..
Right on!
James Davies I think Axe FX, Kemper, Bias, Helix all sound good. You have to be patient enough to coax out the sound you want. For me the Helix is just so freakin easy to program, and works perfectly with my Variax so that's my personal preference.
Richie Castellano Even though I watched this video when you first put it out, I’m just revisiting some of them as I now have my Helix for three months and am now using it live. Keep up the great work!
Richie...
Thank you so much man! I had the HD500X and truly could not get the tones I wanted and found the user interface frustrating. After many weeks of youtube and then finally coming across your channel on the HELIX, I was sold and pulled the trigger as well.
WOW..is all I can say!
I'm using my Fender Strat Elite as my main guitar and a Marshall JVM 410H. I wanted to use the 4 channels of my amp using the reverb of the amp to save an effects block.
After watching your HELIX videos I was astounded at the simplicity of the layout compared to the HD500X...which I might add was the key reason I purchased the HELIX.
Your videos are professional, informative, and very thorough for a newbie of this awesome piece of technology know as the HELIX.
Thanks again man!
Nice board. I'm not much into multi effect units but they sure have come a long long way. Those are very authentic tones. Nice review Richie.
I love that I’m looking at a video from 7 years ago that applies to a product I bought a week ago. Props to line six. Only thing I could think to make this machine better is if it was modular. Like I could take off the expression pedal to make it light some times
Wow! You make this sound amazing best demo of this pedal out there
At 7:13 when you're editing your feedback value, I believe you can also use the expression pedal to change the values rather than the button.
Love your playing brother love you videos keep them coming and keep on picking.
Hey Richie, Love all your stuff man, anyway of downloading these or your updated presets currently?
Amazing playing and tone. One of the greatest Helix video on TH-cam. Please, can you tell us exactly the names of the IR's used on the 4 presets please?
Great channel and your playing is amazing, I'll have to check out your work with BOC. And one more thing, thanks for sharing your presets and explaining how you use them with your gear and band.
Best demonstration I have seen and very convincing ! You should be a Helix rep !!!
96 Halen Music man? I believe the last ones rolled out in 1995. 96 was peavey. Love the channel and the videos! Killer work!
Amazing tone
Nice demo and patches. I see you are using IRs which seems to be the way to really get the most out of the unit. I still haven't bought one yet as I'm still feeling snake-bit by Line 6 as their gear in the past gets obsolete quickly. I currently have a Kemper which I like but miss the dual amp options. Plus the signal chain is not as flexible as this unit is, or on any Fractal gear.
I am wondering if you will do a Brain May demo with this unit like you did with your POD HD 500. Looking forward to some more stuff. Thanks for posting this Richie.
I like Line 6 stuff. I seen the Demo you did with your father. I like the idea you can see the readout LOL Hope to catch your show soon at the St George Theater. Sounding Great Richie c];-D
Excellent video Richie! This is on my wish list...You sound great. .I love your sounds too! Keep on Rocking! 😆
love that dotted 8th thing you did, that's my week ahead gone !
Sounds great, I'm sure the standard of playing helps :) Especially loving your crunch sound. I know it's a cop-out but any chance you could post details of your settings or upload to custom tone? Amp settings would be a great start.
It's done. Search for RichieCastellano
Richie: I bought my first amp from your grandfather at the shop on Bath Ave. Good luck.
Hi Richie, love the video. In three days you really dug in deep. I hope you came up for air. food and water. I really liked your explanations and description of practical application. Thanks so much for the effort. Hope to see you guys when you come to Chicago.
I love the tone you are getting out of this, Richie. You are using the Ownhammer OH 412 MES-OS V70 7B-07 IR file, but I can't find them listed on the Ownhammer site. Did they change the file names to RECTO? Which bundles did you get from the Ownhammer site? I'm trying to get a crunchy high-gain sound and it looks like the Heavy Hitters Collection Vol 1 might be what I need to get me started.
Richie, is this still your stage rig and setup? Or did you change it alot when you spent more time with the Helix? It would be great to see an updated video if you have modified the Helix and setup since this video!
I just got a Helix. I was wondering how I can hear my music from my stereo through my
headphones while playing guitar? Can anyone tell me how? I can't figure it out with the
manuel. Sounds Great Richie!
tonight you are playing my home town, and I am sorry I cant be there. would have been cool to say hi, but hope you have a good one. btw I am in birmingham for Ritchie blackmore whose tickets went on sale first. till next time the cult play or I am in NY. jon
Hi Richie. As always, love your demos and material. When you do the post production on this and others, do you EQ the sounds in ProTools? Or is it flat with no plug-ins so we hear exactly what's on the module?
During the song, I accidentally had my high cut on the Global Eq from my previous gig. I added a little top end back in on the mix. During the demo, the Global EQ is off and what you're hearing is flat, directly into pro tools.
The music in the beginning was awesome. Was that a new song?
Great video and love the tones, especially the WAH! I noticed on Line 6 Custom Tone you've uploaded 4 pages of tones, what is the name of the patch you are using in the video?
Excellent demo played at the beginning. Very tasty playing! I've yet to have an opportunity to try the Helix in person. I play in a cover band and would the amazing flexibility such a unit offers. However, I'm not completely convinced I'd get the necessary cut live that you would get from a real amp. (e.g.I've observed lesser amp modelers disappear in a mix and find I always lessen amp natural distortion & pedal distortion in a live settings to cut through a mix). That isn't even mentioning the attack you get from speakers via moving air and the extra cut you get from driving tube power section of an amp. I suppose I could compromise and use such a unit with IRs turned off through the tube section of a tube amp. However, I'd love to hear how your tour goes using such a unit on a rock band tour direct. If such an approach can work you the potential would be to cut down on moving equipment and save our backs moving less gear :-) Please keep us posted! Thanks for sharing!
Know what you mean, I've used modellers like the Line 6 Flextone which sounded great on it's own, but just got lost in a band setting. I wasn't just a volume thing either, it was just an inability to cut through. Fortunately the Helix, which I own, and presumably AxeFX, Kemper etc. have no problems at all in this dept. I also play in a covers band, mostly rock stuff, but some pop stuff too and my helix sounds way better than my old amp/pedals set-up. I haven't used an amp for almost 3 months now, and I'm still discovering things about the Helix that amaze me. Just buy one, you wont regret it! Oh, and I don't work for Line 6 :)
J, I really appreciate you taking the time to respond. Since we have similar gigs I find your opinion helpful. I' haven't been able to try one out .Music stores in my area won't carry any in stock and will only order one on request. That's made me hesitant. However, comments like this aid in my decision. Do u go direct with IRs in P.A. or do u still plug one in an amp without IR? Thanks again!
Hi. I was using a Valve power amp in to a guitar cab, but I'm now using a small PA monitor and going direct to the PA. that means my monitor signal is the same as FOH. For rehearsals and small gigs I'm just using the monitor (a RCF 710a) as back line and it sounds great
Sounds interesting given the fact that your audience is always hearing a mic'd cab sound anyway. Thanks again for sharing. Much appreciated.
Awesome!!
HELLO
Richie Castellano AFTER DOWNLOADING YOUR CUSTOMTONE HOW TO INSTALL IT ON MY HEALIX LT?
I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS CONGRATULATIONS!
Great review and awesome playing! Have my Helix about 2 months now and discover new things all the time. Those patches sound great. What is the Ownhammer you using?
OH 412 MES-OS V70 with various mics:
7B-09 clean
7B-09 grit
7B-05 crunch
160-03 lead
Hi Richie - so now how do we get BOC to play more Secret Treaties - the most under-appreciated and greatest LP of the '70's? Genius IMO. ALL I ask is that you play the entire LP w/o interruption on every live show from now until forever, with a little Red/Black and Cities on Flame to pad out the show. That's all. Plz see what you can do. :-)
HAHAA!!! I doubt that'll happen, but I loudly applaud your taste & effort, man! Secret Treaties is the shit!!!
Great video. Very informative and great playing. Cheers
Some killer guitar playing
holy moley - great playing!
genial video pero al cambiar de preset ¿no hay cola de efectos del preset anterior?
Just watched more of this video and heard you had the hd500,great...does the hd sound as good as the helix or is there a very big difference
Great review as well of the Helix features .
Awesome rundown! I still have the HD500X, are the presets on the Helix able to be loaded onto the HD500X?
Just curious why you didn’t get the rack version?
Interesting that you would put your modulation effect and delay after the speaker cab. I'm guessing that flies in the face of what would be standard in a guitar rig (either before the amp or in the loop).......but rules were meant to be broken I suppose. I'll have to try it.
So you can use just a powered speaker for an amp? Or a guitar cab with any kind of PA head or amp? Or do you still want a guitar amp? Would it matter if it models any sound?
very good,woww
i know it's kind of off topic but do anybody know a good place to stream new tv shows online?
@Jayceon Julien i use Flixzone. You can find it on google =)
if one is to plug in direct to the main pa and use a speaker for monitors, is there really a difference between these all in one speakers (like the stagesource) from the less expensive behringers or alto powered speakers?
Richie, just curious, after 5 years, does it still hold up? Still the same floor model without any issues? thnx :) rock and roll
I've owned mine now for 6 years and while it hasn't seen a lot of road over the last 3 it still is holding up. And with the latest 3.50 update sounds amazing. I also use Helix Native 3.50 a lot.
For me, it’s seen all sorts of issues with light use. The line 6 certified repair shops are horrible.
Buttons are misfiring, exp pedal is crooked, 1/2 led light on one da doesn’t work. All after barely 2 years of light road use.
I own a Line 6 DT50 amplifier, would you happen to know if the HELIX will work with my amp? I know that the HD500 runs all the functions of my DT50 (I don't presently own one) but would like to purchase the HELIX if it indeed works the DT50? Thanks, Garry.
How did you set up(send) yr stomps(comp, delay, chorus), in the upper place for the footswitches? I wanna do the same, but....no chance.
Wow , this was really good!
hey Richie, great sound and very good playing! i have downloaded your patches and the same IR's - sounds good - thank you! but i have a feeling i need adjust some settings for my guitar. i have Hamer Californian with high gain pickups, looks like i need reduce amp gain. Do you have any advice what should be adjusted to match another guitars or pickups?
Yes, you will definitely need to adjust for your guitar. I made these presets specifically for the axis and I still tweak them from venue to venue.
i'm a newbie, could you tell me what usually need to be adjusted in such cases? thank you
+Vitali Ryumshin probably the gain and the high cuts on the ir blocks. Then you can probably start messing with the amp eqs
thank you, much appreciated!
Wow awesome playing brother! Is the musicman axis your preferred workhorse?? Great guitars
I hear a lot of buzz about patch switching delay but it doesn't seem really prevalent here. I know they all have it. How bad it is really?
Love your video's there helping me figure this thing out!!
yours videos about Helix are awesome!!!
Anyone have an idea where you wouyld set up that High Pass to ditch the fizz? on then high end? BTW use the other all purpose preset Richie also does a vid on.
Is that picture on the wall background Aerosmith or Zeppelin? Also cool vid, you and BÖC are the best!
Y qué opinas de la Fractal AX-8? Muchos dicen que es mucho mejor que la Helix..., porque valen lo mismo, pero quiero saber si su calidad de sonido es muy diferente. Gracias.
Richie, On internet time, or Helix time, this video was made generations ago. But here's the question. Do you use the same patches in shows as you use in the studio. Or from big stage to small stage? What I'm getting at is that a preset is like a patch of color on a canvas that may be blank, or may be full of other colors, soft to loud, hue to hue... Whether it stands out, clashes, complements, blends, harmonizes or fizzles within the "big picture" has a lot to do within the framework of colors created by the other instruments, a.k.a., in "the mix."
Do you have a short-hand way of taking a preset you love in the studio and adapting it for shows? Thanks in advance. By the way, love the "Where's the F'n Beat" videos.
Sometimes I'll use my live patches for the studio if I'm being lazy. Generally, I try to make new sounds for recordings just to keep things fresh, but I do have a few patches I always go back to. For the live stuff, I try to get close at home and then I constantly tweak the sounds on the road. The foot editing mode is super handy for that.
How do you like the Line 6 Stagesource? Any preference on the model you are using?
Cool video. How do you find the Engl tones compare to your Morse amp ? Has the Helix displaced it ...
I haven't A/B'd them, but I like both very much. If I were able to bring my Engl on the road with me, I'd definitely still use it. In that scenario, I'd use the Helix in a 4 cable setup and also have it handle channel switching via midi. Since I can't use my Engl on fly-out gigs, I'm using the Helix for everything. It's hard to beat having a real amp blowing air at the back of your legs, but the Helix does a damn good job when you can't have that setup.
Thanks Ritchie, that makes a lot of sense. Flexibility is certainly the key I think with the Helix. I keep meaning to give one a try.
Richie Castellano have you tried playing the Helix through an FRFR monitor? Try Atomic or Line 6 L2t. You won't believe how good they sound. And because they are usually positioned in front of you (aimed at your guitar and ears not the back of your legs) it takes less volume to get that real amp and cab feel. Beats lugging around an amp and cab too.
He mentions that just over 6:00 into the video, direct into the PA and a Floor monitor, there's a Line 6 FRFR monitor in the left bottom corner of the video.
Stratamania Well spotted. I wasn't sure if he just meant the typical stage wedges but you're right about the frfr off to the left. I bring my L2t to every show!
i missed it in the video...how are we hearing pedal and how do u hear it? great job richie!
mono XLR direct into pro tools
Your tones are fantastic Richie! I just ordered the L2m. Are you using the L6 connector? I tried different powered monitors and didn't really like the way they sounded. Really hoping Stage Source does the trick
No, I use regular XLR. The L6 connector was doing something I didn't like. I don't remember what it was....lol
Richie Castellano Cool, so one XLR to L2m and the other to FOH?
XLR goes to my monitor (with Global EQ applied.) 1/4 inch goes to DI to FOH with no EQ.
Richie Castellano Thank you. On a side note, I met Eric Bloom a few years ago at Summerfest in Milwaukee. He was hanging with Bruce Kulick. I didn't know who Eric at the time. I handed him my phone and asked him to take a picture of me and Bruce. After I realized what I had done, I had my picture taken with him too lol
I can't afford this thing but it's awesome,I'm looking at either a line 6 hd500 or a boss gt10 or gt100...what you think.
MrRockman46 the Helix lt is about the same price. Looked used on reverb.
This video is great but it could use more cowbell..
xchump i wonder how many people undestood this joke! I almost pee myself lol (snl sketch right?
;)
“I’ve got a fever....and the cure is....MORE COWBELL!
Pretty sure 99% of the world’s population understood the joke at this point. 🙄
Thank You... great video... awesome tones
What amp model is the grit?
Great review thanks for sharing.
I don't mean to solicit but I have a red 2000 Peavey Wolfgang I've been trying to sell for a couple years. Would you be Interested?
Of course your tone makes me want to rethink lol
When u change presets does your helix have a lag? Mine has a small one
Yeah, but it's not enough to bother me.
Thanks for your help.
Just curious.. why the always on -3dB gain that you click OFF for a boost as opposed to an on demand +3dB gain boost?
Billy Austin he always has it on and when he wants a boost he clicks it off. He just does it in reverse.
You are thee best!!
Really intresting thanks for video.
great video , very helpful !..Cheers
Hi can you do circular delays with helix ? Ta
Yes, in stereo.
I love it!
sick playing
Hi Richie I was Wanderung oft you would Share that IR you Use?
Sorry, I can't for legal reasons. I bought it from OwnHammer if that helps.
Awesome!
pretty neat...
Are the 2 amp models in the same preset??
no
GREAT!!!!
You are amazing!
good. Could Richie ask you for facebook about helix?
wauuu qe talento
Richie, I must have missed it but how are you able to have the presets (preset mode) on the bottom and the associated effects (stomp mode) on top? Great tones by the way.
Thanks! Under settings-> footswitches.
Thanks for the fast response! You are doing a great job explaining everything; excellent!
Nice recording to boot!
F;)₪& yeh man !!! 🤘🔥🔥🔥
Oh I see, your not using snapshots
Think I have a man crush!
all them guitars, and not a single real amplifier in the room.
Those are in my amp room, where I don't keep any guitars. : P
Yup, got my Helix and monitors with my guitars, amps are downstairs.
Ritche renounce this world. Leave Satan and his friends hanging. You haven't accepted Jesus yet. You need resurrection. Before you were born He knew you, while in your Mothers womb He set you apart. Don't be used by cheap washouts who wrote many lame records. Fireworks worst song ever. Bhuck Darma ruined imaginos.
Hi Richie!
Are the crunch sounds significantly better than the HD500X has?
Thanks you!
Yes
