What a sensible video, no pretence, a totally typical sheep fleece that most of us buy.

Thank you - I found this to be very helpful and informative, and it's great to know that other people have problems with their cats as well! I am really looking forward to hearing more about your fibre tumbler - I previously also used an old spin dryer, but having moved to North Wales last year, that was one thing that didn't come with us, as it was really old and hardly worked!

Thank you! And welcome to North Wales! I am in North Anglesey. I bought my spin dryer from facebook marketplace
Mine is also on it's way out now, but I think I paid £15 for it, so it has more than earned its keep!
The fibre tumbler video shouldn't take long to record or edit, so it won't be a long wait!

Thank you for this in-depth video! I’ve never heard of anyone else mention more than one method of scouring before. This was very educational 💗🙏🏽🧶

Thank you for video, I do like the way you explain the reasons for why you do what. As a newbie I am trying to work my way through several fleeces. I made the first wash the hottest as limited for hot water then just warm water for rinses and I have to say all I have is a salad spinner it takes ages. I dry them on netting in poly tunnel. So I’m guessing the first hot wash is the most important ?

Thank you and yes, the first Hot wash is the most important for removing dirt with the lanolin. You can do a cold soak first if you like. The aim of which is for the worse of the dirt to fall off before starting the lanolin melt method.

Hallo from South Africa. Thank you for the good information. Cannot wait to see how to refine the lanolin.
Do you think that tallow soap could work to strip the lanolin from the wool?

Thank you! Sorry for the delay in the refining video! I have written a youtube post about it today.
One of the reasons I chose to use olive oil soap, is that one of the potential methods of refining utilised olive oil. However, olive oil was not very effective and the use of olive oil soap has made my chosen method more challenging due to the oil/fat content.
Tallow soap may well work for the fleece but I have never tried it.
It would, however, make the refining more challanging. Though, still not impossible!

Thanks for showing a realistic scour! I have seen some discordance between the fleeces I've received verses the examples some TH-camrs show, in terms of their cleanliness to begin with. I am trying to clean Leicester Longwool currently and am struggling so much to get the lanolin out, even using this method. Can multiple scourings harm the wool if I were to persist?

      Hi
Further scouring won't harm the wool providing you don't aggitate the wool.
I haven't tried Leicester longwool. My most challanging fleece was a Bluefaced Leicester because I could not get the fine grass from the tight curly tips. I dyed that fleece in the end.
For your fleece, I would try a cold overnight soak, tips down. Followed by a really hot scour, but try adding some table salt as well as detergent.
I would then give it 3 rinces to ensure you get the salt out.

@@fflwff thanks for the tips! (No pun intended?) I also have a blue faced Leicester to deal with - it is filthy but seems to be coming up ok in the end. For the Leicester longwool it doesn't seem that dirty but it is caked in lanolin. I'll keep trying!
