Thank you so much! I was cleaning my 30 year old quickfire reel to be a gift for my son and didnt realize there was a spring connection point under the bail wire- *thank you* for showing me where to reconnect and not make it a lost cause!!!
I love these Shimano quick fires. Great system, wonderful rear drag. I have several. Took one apart to clean and lube and it exploded. Still trying to reassemble. Lol
i love the quick fire system on shimano reels. The sidestab with the push button to release the spool was a great feature. I'm having trouble getting the bail to catch after I cast. Maybe it's time to upgrade, but I still like the reel. I don't understand why it won't catch. I have some old fx series, maybe I can swap some parts.
I Have several of these types of reels... catch a lot of fish with them. Over time with sun, salt etc the "trigger" gets a little sticky. I do wash/rinse the reels in fresh water. I have tried several types of light lubrication, but nothing works well. what do you recommend?
I suggest a good spray with penetrating oil to both pivots on the rotor. That cleans thee dirt and leaves a light oil coat for lubrication. After you spray it down, work the lever several times to help free it up.
I’m a huge fan of your page! If you find any of the Shimano AXUL-S 500s or the AX 100Q ultra lights with or without bio-grip I am seriously interested, and that’s parts included
Denis - There were several different designs to the Shimano quick fire bail. Best to check the schematics if you are working on one - You should be able to get the schematic online - Dennis
@@2ndChanceTackle yes thanks i got it figured out. Its the 9427 bail spring guide that broke on mine. Was looking to find a place quick since i’m going out this thursday! Thanks
On the AX200Q 1993 model, on the “off” side of the bail, there is a trip lever, a circular spring, and a bail cam. The tiny cam piece activates the trip lever fully, and the trip lever hits the trip ramp inside the case (similar to a Ryobi GX-20). I dropped my bail cam when servicing mine…which makes the trip lever not depress fully. (Part 197 in the 1993 model schematic). It’s odd that Shimano changed the design for this year only.
Are there quick-fire reels for surf fishing? I’ve never seen one large enough plus the strength of a surf cast might be simply too much for the mechanism. Just curious. I’ve cast the old way for so long I’m not going to change now. Wanted to tell you that I fought my first lot of somewhat beat up (but working) surf reels just for fun. They included Shakespeare Olympic, Calypso Mako (?), and Quantum. I’ll let you know what happens as I’ve never done this before. Best thing is they cost less than $4 per reel. A friend is sending me 4 drag knobs to try on that Daiwa 8600 I told you about. Hopefully 1 of them will work. Great video as these reels are foreign to me.
Gary Dodgson Thank you Gary! That Mitchell you mention intrigues me. I have a Mitchell Ottomatic 330 that can be cast by one hand but it still involves holding the line. The bail is spring loaded so you touch it and it opens. I’d love to see a Mitchell like the one you mentioned. I honestly didn’t think a “Quick-fire” bail could work in surf fishing. That’s all I do and I only use my vintage reels. I have 21 Mitchells now and I love those reels. Are all Quick-fire reels rear drag? I know little about these reels so thanks for sharing!
Gary Dodgson Gary, I looked on EBay for a Mitchell “finger dab” reel and the ones shown are indeed the French Mitchell “Ottomatic” auto bail reels so I guess I have one. The one I have wouldn’t work very well in saltwater either. Perhaps a 440A might work for inshore if you use the larger capacity spool. I can indeed cast these reels with one hand but they work very differently than these Quick-fire reels as I understand them. Anyway you taught me what a “finger dab” reel is. I never knew that.
Gary Dodgson I have a Mitchell 330 that is a “finger dab” reel also known as Ottomatic or auto bail. There is an EBay seller from Hawaii that specializes in these type reels and sells a lot of the European “Match” reels. I got mine from him mostly out of curiosity. I guess you can use your thumb but I cast it with one motion with my index finger capturing the line and touching the bail as I pull the line up against the rod. It is different than a quick-fire reel which uses even less motion. I do some freshwater fishing but I live 2 hours from the coast and do almost entirely surf fishing. I am nowhere good enough to compete at anything at my age! LOL
Dennis, presenting this question here because the reel I am referencing has a quick-fire bale however it is the spirex 2500fg and the question I have is regarding the oscillation gear. Have you ever seen an oscillation gear that has irregular teeth by design? I've been having problems with this real since I got it in 2018 after only three months of use. Its very stiff on retrieve. I took it apart at least 6x. I noticed the oscillation gear has different size teeth which appear to have been cut that way. I cant imagine why this would have been done. When u look at the gear you can see there some teeth that sit higher off the base of the gear which is not the result of wear. Any ideas? Have you observed this before? Thanx
I have not seen the issue you are referring to on any oscilation gears that I can recall. I have seen warped ones, and some reels like Okuma use an oval oscillation system, but I can't recall larger or smaller teeth on the same gear without their being a wear problem. Thanks for asking - Dennis
What does Shimano call the bail returning to the firing point ? This is not the typical anti reverse which stops the bail instantly where it is. I have used shimano reels with quickfire for the last 35 years. Unfortunately they dont seem to be releasing anymore high end reels with this feature , only the lower end reels. Does any other manufacture have a reel that only stops at the firing point ?
@@2ndChanceTackle Can you get the spirex with a different handle ? I cant stand that double grip handle. Possibly a handle from another shimano reel will work on it ?
I am pretty sure that another Shimano handle with the single knob would fit the reel. Manufacturers don't vary handle shaft sizes that much. Unfortunately, there is no easy way to find out which other models share the handle shaft size - Dennis
Can you do a video on replacing the bail spring on a penn reel? I have a penn per suit 6000 and the bail spring is bent and have no idea how to reassemble it.
I believe that your bail spring is the same as the one shown in the video th-cam.com/video/iHBVhk-54Uw/w-d-xo.html. See if it is helpful. I have a pursuit in the shop and can do one if this is not the same - thanks for asking - Dennis
Great video; using it to repair my Shimano MLX 200 Quickfire. Question: is the spring on the “live” side called an anti-reverse cam spring OR a clutch pawl spring?
@@2ndChanceTackle Could be. This spring sits at the bottom of the "cavity" at what you call the "live" end of the bail. It is shaped more like a boomerang than a comma. There is another spring in the assembly that looks nearly identical except that it is somewhat smaller than the spring in question, which is broken.
Hi Dennis: I was told that there are no stupid questions. That being said: I have the reel you are working on, and when I press the spool button to release the spool, it doesn't come off. What am I doing wrong? Thanks, Neil (a real novice!!)
You may not be doing anything wrong. You may have a broken spool or axle shaft where they join together. The basics to remove the spool is to push down on the button and hold the button down while pulling up on the spool. There is a clip inside the spool that slips into a grove on the axle shaft. When you push the button in, it expands the clip to move out of the slot in the axle, You can then lift the spool up and off. If the clip or button are jammed or broken, it will not release from the slot and you will not be able to remove it - Dennis
I have an FX 2000 and a Sidestab 4000 with this feature. Don't really use them. But i can't bring my self to get rid of them as i think they're pretty cool.
That is a little different than my 2000 syncopate. I have a different style spring on the quick fire side. It feels like there is too much play in it and the bail won't open all of the way using the trigger.
Dennis, say a few words about internal bail trip versus impact trip bail. I don't like impact trip bails. My other pet peeve is spinning reels without an anti-reverse selector switch.
Manufacturers eliminated the A/R over-ride when they introduced the one way A/R clutch for instant stopping. They did not want to invest in the engineering and expense to design the over-ride as the felt most anglers never used the feature. You can still find it on Shimano and Okuma, but most of the Penn Reels are one way only. I think there is less to break in the external "bang" bail trip. I just don't like hearing that sound. Both are acceptable. With the external one, I think it is easier to flip the bail back manually - Dennis

Can the Quick fire/bail be added on a new style shimano reel?
Not that I am aware of. It requires a different rotor set up
