    4 to 6 or more years in the military is worth dedicating, unlike wasting ones life working at a normal day job for more than 10 or more year's just to barely getting by in life of a small paycheck.

      YOUR Military Money One "criticism" I have with your video isn't just about your video but a lot of others. You did mention that the Air Force has the best travel opportunities but aside from that most everything else you said was really about the military in general. We really don't see videos that deal with how each branch is compared to other branches. Hopefully someone will come out with a video detailing all the unique crap each branch does that other branches don't do as much if at all. For example, in the Army you get issued infantry gear and have to go out to the field constantly regardless of your MOS, while Air Force doesn't do that. Or if you deploy in Army your deployment will last longer than Air Force, or the Air Force often lets you do PT on your own whereas Army group PT is mandatory and you have to get up earlier in the morning for it and at times you might even have to do it wearing infantry gear, basic training in Army is longer and harder than Air Force (and Army basic is getting even longer and harder than it is now) and AIT in Air Force lets trainee platoons march without cadre while Army trainees have to be marched everywhere by cadre, etc.

    I'd like to comment on my Air Force experience. I joined two days before I turned 19, my ship date was August 30th 2010 and I turned 19 in basic on Sept 1 2010. That was the most miserable birthday of my life, my MTI screwed with me all freaking day and made it a living hell. As to the reasons I joined, my first semester at a community college the year prior I got two C's and two D's in easy gen. ed courses and was not motivated to do well in college after barely getting through high school. I needed a job and a way to get out of my parents house and I saw the Air Force as my only realistic option for how I could afford to move out on my own. I didn't really need the GI bill because my education was mostly paid for by my parents prior to joining, but I didn't take it seriously at the time because I wasn't paying for it and needed discipline and direction. I also had no idea what I wanted to do. I got an early discharge (still honorable) about 21 months time in service due to some disciplinary issues while I was in, but I am now 24 and going to University on the Post 9/11 GI Bill and with my parents FL prepaid college plan I actually made an extra $1000 this month because of overage payments by combining the two. It's hard to say if the Air Force was a good choice for me and its easy to look back and say what I could've done differently but the past is behind me I can only focus on the present moment. I am now set to graduate with a BS degree in Computer Science in about 2.5 more years.

    • @yourmilitarymoney
      @yourmilitarymoney  8 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Jacob my story was similar to yours as far as not being ready for college at the beginning. I was kicked out (academic reasons). I truly believe it's not how we start, but how we finish! Stay focused with school, have fun and continue to grow!

      Thank you for sharing this. I'm 17, I'm in my last year of high school and I feel like I'm going through the same thing. I wanna leave my parents house but I can't afford it. Once I graduate high school, I'll also have my AA degree in liberal arts since I go to community college and high school. If you don't mind, I'd like to ask some questions since you already went through what I'm gonna go through:
      How does it feel like leaving almost everything behind?
      Does the air force do a good job in shaping you for the work force?
      Again, thank you for writing this comment

    You and I have crossed paths on different videos and for the most part I have had little to add. One thing I have started stressing now is the MSO. While most people can come in and do their 4 or 6 yr contract, there is that little hidden clause called the Military Service Obligation which is 8 yrs. As as rule it doesn't come into play all that often but I like people to know that its there if WE NEED YOUR SKILL and are short handed Also under the "STOP LOSS" program. We can call you back or hold you on AD for those additional 2 yrs. We saw this happen a lot at the time of the Gulf War. They went out and swept up everyone who was under that MSO obligation.. Like I said, "Is it common? No," but it is there and people need to be aware of the possibility.that they can be recalled until that 8 yr clock has expired.

    • @yourmilitarymoney
      @yourmilitarymoney  7 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      You are absolutely correct and you bring up a great point. Hopefully recruiters are explaining this thoroughly when people join the military.

      @antares4s 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      YOUR Military Money
      O hope so too but but the world of recruiters is wide and right now we are in a shortfall in maintenance AFSCs. Nothing positive yet but certain signs are bubbling up,there,so I wonder; not to mention an increase in staffing for FY17. You should know as well as I do about reading tea leaves.

    • @TheLastChicken
      @TheLastChicken 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      antares4s im sorry your kind of confusing me so you serve 4-6 years but you have a chance of getting called back after 8 and when you do how long? Another 4-6 years? I really want to serve my country but i know its not a good paying job so i wanted to go be a commercial pilot after so would this interfere at all?

    • @antares4s
      @antares4s 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Your contract tells you how long you will serve on active or reserve duty. Your military service obligation tells you how long the AF can recall you to duty if needed. That military service obligation is 8 yrs from the date you enlist. It is possible that you will serve your contract and get out but for some reason (mainly a shortage) the AF can recall you back to duty for up to a total of 8 yrs. It doesn't happen all that often but it can. So just remember that if sign up for a 4 yr contract that the AF can recall you to duty for an additional 4 yrs if needed or 2 yrs in the case of a 6 yr contract.

    Commented on one of your videos in the past.. May have even been this one. I just wanted to say thanks.. You're a very positive person and aspire to be more like that. I have always been unpredictable with my life decisions and never made my mind up. In high school, I quit sports a lot. I dropped out of college. I have a good job at 22 making almost 20/hr with a corporation in Texas. I'm not a bad person and have never been in trouble I just have always had issues with motivation/determination/self confidence. I know the Air Force will help me achieve these things and I want to live my life to the fullest and chase my dreams. I'm not mentally strong enough to do it right now on my own and that's why I'm joining.. I need core values. I need to reconstruct who I am and that's why I'm joining. Great video! Im seriously considering joining the United States Air Force. I want to better myself, im 19 years-old, male. Just graduated high school 12 months ago. And i already feel like i have hit a dead end on a One way road. I want to join to better my life in the future. I really want to become a firefighter. And im going to college for a fire-science degree. But college isn't cheap. only a few things are stopping me from pulling the trigger and Joining. First of all, im scared. I hate like hell to use that word. But I'm scared of taking a step into the unknown. What if i fail? Most importantly, what if i regret it few months after i join although i highly doubt il regret it. And second, mental health. I was going through a bit of anxiety since i graduated high school. Primarily because i was afraid of the real word becoming an adult. I really want to talk to a recruiter but they're literally paid to recruit people. Just a salesman pitch. I just need honest advice from personal experience. Some challenges and things that helped you guys?

    • @yourmilitarymoney
      @yourmilitarymoney  7 ปีที่แล้ว +53

      Don't let fear stop you from bettering yourself or living life. Fear not living your life. Consider a 4 year enlistment. Time flies. One year has already passed since high school for you. You won't be the only one feeling that way. If you join, others will feel that way and you'll all get through it. Think of the upside, your confidence will increase day by day. If you don't like it, it's the not end of the world. Time will fly by. My first Air Force job was as a firefighter. Life is what you make it, where you make it and what you want to make it. Do research and see if it's for you. If it's not for you, that's alright as well.

      @emberbetz7925 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Alyn Romero bro I don't know if this still applies to you but I'll give you my input. I was in a perdicament where I saw myself becoming more and more of a person I did not want to be, I failed out of college I worked part time in a grocery store and I just generally felt like I hit a dead end. Then, I took the plunge and acted on an idea I had been flirting with for a while and I joined the United States Marine Corps at 20. At first I loved it, then I hated being in (just a bad chain of command and I got injured) it had nothing to do with the service it was just I was in a unit that wasn't a good fit for me but then I got out and I have regretted ending my service and am seeking to go back in. You will never have the comradery or brotherhood that the military will give you anywhere else. I'm not a recruiter but I say if it's in your heart go for it you can only move forward man. Just remember to take it seriously and stay away from the dudes that are doing the wrong thing because if you join up you won't know right off the bat if you want to stay in or get out that desicion takes some time look at me 2 yrs out and I'm looking at reenlisting. So go with your heart bro if you feel it's a good fit do it.

    Another great video sir! Thank you for sharing. I've commented on a few of your videos in the past, questioning what I should do and I believe I have decided on enlisting in the AF Reserves. I'm heading to MEPS in a couple weeks and will also be taking the ASVAB. I'm nervous, but at the same time looking forward to seeing what jobs I will qualify for and what kinds of opportunities will open up for me. Maybe down the road I'll pursue and officer position or look into active duty (even though I hear it's super hard to switch over), but we'll see! I think the reserves is a good route for me and I hear many people including yourself speak very highly of it so that is comforting.

      Being nervous is normal but I learned last week in a course I was taking for the Air Force about a term called "balance your thinking." Anytime we feel doubt or feel insecure, we have to catch that and snap out of it. You can do it, just like I can do it. It's normal to feel that sometimes. Have fun with any challenge you encounter, learn from others, teach others and enjoy your journey!

    hey man. I just needed some guidance because I was going to join the Army(Infantry) but now I'm leaning more towards the Air Force because I actually want to learn new skills that will help me once I leave the military. My grandpa did Logistics in the Air Force from '78-'96 and he said it was the best decision he had ever made. The MOS that interests me most is ISR Operator(Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance) and I was wondering if you knew anything about that job regarding how hard it is to get in and things like that. Great video, I'm actually finally considering joining this year. I'll be 24 in august, I wanted to join around 3 years ago but I didn't because I let my families opinions get the best of me, but if I joined when I should've I think I would've been a little better off as far as guidance and education wise. Although I have no regrets, I'm currently married now and a mother of two and I'm looking forward to enlisting. I believe it's better to join now instead of continuing to put it off because now I have to think about what's in the best interest for me and my family and I believe this is the best route. Keep up with the videos, all of them are very informative. Thank you

    First I would like to say "Thank You" for your service. I've been watching some of your videos about the Air Force. The Air Force is something I've always wanted to be apart of. I am currently still in High School. I'm a Junior about to be a Senior soon. My first plan was to join the Air Force after I graduate. But I want to go to a specific College in Atlanta: Morehouse College. So my plan now is to join the Air Force Reserves to maintain getting an actual feeling of College and not online. I lcurrently live near an Air Force Base now. Is it true that I can join the Reserves and still work on the base I currently live near and maintain getting my Associate's Degree from a two year College (GMC-Georgia Military College) here where I live then transferring over to a Base near Atlanta [which would probably be Dobbins AFB] to finish out my Bachelor's Degree at Morehouse College?? And also is it true that I join the Reserves and I go Active Duty after I've gotten my Degree's to go in as an Officer???

    • @yourmilitarymoney
      @yourmilitarymoney  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the feedback. You can join the Air Force Reserve and go to college. You'll probably have a short break from college during basic training and technical training. However, it is difficult to go from Reserve to Active Duty. It's possible but not very likely unless you have a degree is really short on and looking for. I would recommend you speak with a recruiter about this without signing a contract so you can explore your options. Feel free to contact me after you've spoken with a recruiter.

I learned a lot from this video but I am still juggling between them. The jobs I've looked at the Army and the Air Force both have them in some way or form. • @yourmilitarymoney
      @yourmilitarymoney  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It will depend on your personality. Some people like the field so the Army works for them. Some people like the technical side so the Air Force works for them. Explore both with recruiters and do what's best for you.

    Hi, YMM
    I'm an engineering new grad. I mostly wanna join the air force as a career stepping stone. I've never considered myself "patriotic" or wanting to "serve my country". Morally, it's hard for me to be on board even if it would boost my career. I just keep thinking about contributing to the war-torn atrocities around the world. And at the end of the day, the US (or any nation for that matter) isn't a place I don't think I'd be willing to sacrifice my life for. Are these thoughts you (or anyone else reading) have wrestled about before choosing to join? I'm gonna try talking with an officer recruiter this week. Thanks. Love your vids.

      YOUR Military Money I appreciate the quick response I’m pretty dead set on joining the military. I went to recruiter today but the offices are all closed. I took my asvap for the army without studying because I was kind of rushed into it and scored a 52... I know I’ve could of scored way higher if I brushed up on some stuff. Wasn’t that difficult tbh. My question is jobs. I’m interested in IT as it’s what I wanted to do in college, also firemen, but I am also curious how infantry unit works in the Air Force?

  • @GailStrom

    Back in 1989 I walked into the Air Force recruiters office ready to sign up for 4 years. My dad was also present and he said I should take one more night to consider the 4 year commitment versus the 3 year that the Army required of me (he was Army). I went home to think on that and freaked myself out about the 4 years, and commiting PERIOD. I never joined. Instead I bounced around without a plan and ended up making some mistakes that made me ineligible to join later. Thankfully God redeemed my mistakes and I met my wife at the end of the rocky road and now we have a great family. My two cents for young people is to HAVE A PLAN and don't overthink the commitment of 3-6 years because those years go FAST! Bless you all who have served and are thinking of serving. I hope my son chooses to serve.

    What do you do if you're renting an apartment and you don't want to brake your rent lease. Should you talk to your landlord? On the hand, maintain your bills while away for a long time. And another thing, how many days are months do they let you go home to visit for an break?

      If you're in the military, get a lease with a military clause which will allow you to break your lease when you have to change assignments. During your time off you can go where you want to but you have to be back in time for work or else you'll have to use your leave (vacation time).

    Am an Indian and as an outsider I always want to try out those high tech American jets..now I know that a pilot doesn't choose but is allocated one depending upon his capabilities and etc....but yeah when it comes to choose...I would prefer being an American pilot rather than Indian pilot.lol🤣😂...reason-we have 30-40 yr old junk fighter jets and those don't inspire youngsters to join the air Force....but an American should line up..die waiting for the moment when he can get the opportunity to try out these awsum jets..!!..
    Just my personal opinion..overall I love my air Force and their talent especially when an Indian pilot with his Soviet era Mig21 downed an F16..so I love the talent of my lads but yeah they are using obsolete tech!!

    Hi thanks for making this video. I have a question: will I ever spend time in the water if I’m in the Air Force? Like do they ever get to be stationed along the coasts or on ships? I am considering the Air Force or navy. I talked with a AF recruiter today and i think they are so cool and smart. I want to be a crypto linguist (i already know how to speak Ukrainian and Russian) so it would b cool but I just need to score high on the asvab. I took a practice test and got a 55, my arithmetic is TERRIBLE I need to review that middle school math. Also I don’t know... )~; because I love the water and want to stay on the coast so that’s why I’m considering joining the navy (I’d love to go be in mass communications but...who knows if that position would be open) I would rather go into Air Force because I just feel like it’s right for me and I think you guys are awesome but I don’t want to be stationed in the middle of nowhere (like mid west middle America) I don’t want to be away from the ocean. I know that planes / jets / etc land on the big ships and need refueling and touch ups and stuff so i was thinking there’s still a big possibility I’d be by the coast. Also I don’t even know if I’ll score high enough for crypto linguist and I was wondering what are some of the best jobs ? In your opinion

    • @yourmilitarymoney
      @yourmilitarymoney  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Both options are good- Navy and Air Force. Speak with both recruiters and base your decision on the job that you want and job that you get. If you want water, Navy may be better option. The Air Force does have linguist and communications career fields. Do what's best for you.

You may have an eye refraction level of no worse than + or - 8.0. Note that some careers, like pilots, have stricter vision requirements that may influence your career placement.

    I’m debating joining the Air Force. I really think flying fighter jets would be insanely fun and I’ve always loved adrenaline rushes, but going the civilian route is hard to turn down also. Flying for an airline has great pay and it’s guaranteed you get to fly planes.

    • @macburger5026
      @macburger5026 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      jamlaw05 The only service members who fly jets in the Air Force are officers, and even then it's only a small percentage of officers. That said, arguably the Air Force is the best branch to be in for *MANY* reasons. If you join the Air Force instead of the Army (or Marines since Marines is also an infantry branch), you would have the best living conditions and you won't have to do the extra bullshit the Army does like going back and forth out to the field (not to say the Air Force *NEVER* goes to the field, but it's very rare), mandatory group PT, motor pool, ruck marches, infantry equipment that you must account for all the time or else (and also have to do PT with infantry equipment), cleaning weapons, etc. Also if you get deployed in the Air Force, it's supposed to last quite shorter than a deployment in the Army would. Army deployments last at least nine months to a year in the middle east while Air Force are six months or less.

      jamlaw05 I guess so. You can get a degree then see if you can go to officer candidate school (if youre in the age range).

    Good day. Do you have any knowledge in the process of switching branches? I meant like I did the asvab and medical now my Air Force recruiter is trying to get my records from meps

    • @yourmilitarymoney
      @yourmilitarymoney  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't have that much knowledge but I'll share what I know. You should notify the branch of service you initially contacted and let them know that you want to go with another branch of service. Then contact the new recruiter and have them help you out. It sounds like you've already done that so be in contact with your recruiter. What was your first choice originally and what is it now?

    I really need to ask you some things. I'm a woman (I don't care if they cut my hair or whatever, can I ask them to cut my hair?), but I am overweight (I want to lose my weight and join), What I'm worried about is that I'm too old. I'm 29 going on 30 (Am I too old?). I don't know how to swim (Will they teach me?). I don't have a job and my family is very conservative wanting me to have a husband and children and I don't see that in my future. I've been wanting to be in the Marines but I'm too old now. I have anxiety but have been off my meds for two years can I still sign up after I lose my weight? Also I have glasses does that effect me any? I'm great with sit ups and endurance runs but I'm worried my anxiety or my age would hurt my chances of serving and protecting our nation, I also want to join because I'm in a bad situation with family (They're overly religious and it's not how I am, they are mentally abusive.) I know this is long and you may not respond but I'm seeking out help and answers since I really DO want to join but my weight, anxiety, and age may prevent me but I'm willing to put in that effort to enlist! I hope that you can get back to me :)

    • @yourmilitarymoney
      @yourmilitarymoney  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      For you to join any branch of the service, you'll have to be in good physical shape and you'll be screened to ensure you are cleared. If you are cleared, then you should be good to go. The physical screening is extensive so you just have to show up and they'll do the rest. Either you will pass or not. If you do join, it will be a good way to become independent and create your own journey. Speak with a recruiter and see how it goes.

    Could you tell me some things to consider about joining at a later age? I am 30 and about half way through a college degree that I haven't touched since about age 24. I have just under 20K in student loans and am still in a place in life where I'm struggling for stability and really wanting to pay my loans off. Is it easy to enlist as active duty? I am considering that to help stabilize my life, but am not particularly interested in reserve at this time. And if so, what might I face, personally, joining at a later age versus most of the men and women who will be joining alongside me, given that they will mostly be many years younger than me (I am guessing anyway)? Thank you in advance.

    • @yourmilitarymoney
      @yourmilitarymoney  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Active duty is great! It will give you either 4 or 6 years of stability, pay, medical, experience and travel among other things. You are still VERY young. Imagine doing a 20 year career and retiring at 50. That's a great option. Because you're a little older, you have experience in life and if you're focused on any of your goals....you'll make them happen. I enlisted at 24 and made of for lost time. Enlisting is pretty simple. You have to take the ASVAB and pass the medical portion. Contact an Air Force recruiter and explore your options. The Air Force is a great way of life.

      YOUR Military Money, thank you for your reply. I have one more question, if you don't mind. At age 30 I am feeling a little more prone to injury than I was at 21 or so. I don't feel bullet proof anymore. I am in the gym daily to keep my physical condition up, but I am a little worried about the consequences of being injured during basic training. If I were to pinch a nerve or injury a shoulder joint or something would this be a major set back or would I be allowed to heal and continue on? I have spoken with a recruiter who says I am fit to join, but I just worry about procedure and am told it is difficult to trust someone who has something to personally gain from my joining.

    • @yourmilitarymoney
      @yourmilitarymoney  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I understand your concern but don't worry about that. Press forward and you'll be fine. If something were to happen, you'd be taken care of. Life brings uncertainties but we still need to move forward. You're still very young and if you're cautious....you'll be fine.

    pros/cons for mothers w/ kids?

    • @yourmilitarymoney
      @yourmilitarymoney  7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Pros: serve our country, stability, medical, pay, work on career, growth professionally, teamwork, satisfaction, good rates for childcare on base and travel around the world in many cases with your children, your new military family.
      Cons: time away from your children during deployments, childcare if needed, cost of child care.
      Do research, ask questions and see if it's a good fit for you.

    • @yourmilitarymoney
      @yourmilitarymoney  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Everett, have him contact an Air Force recruiter about Officer Training School (OTS). That should be his first attempt since he already has a bachelor's degree. If that doesn't work, then consider going enlisted. Both are great options but he should first consider going the officer route. If I can help, let me know.

    I wanted to join the Air Force a few years ago, but there were articles coming out about overcrowding and them needing to cut thousands of jobs through 2019. I wanted to do personnel (prob a popular job) at that time too. Recently, I've thought of joining again but in the IT or cyberspace field of work (new interest). Do you think those jobs are still up for grabs or too competitive to tell? I really don't want to get my hopes too high with picking a job and then they put me in another field, based on limited space. Sorry for the rambling!

    • @yourmilitarymoney
      @yourmilitarymoney  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's worth looking into. Here's what you should do next- speak with a recruiter, take the ASVAB to see what jobs you'll qualify for, see what current openings the Air Force has and think if you will go active duty, guard or reserve. Don't let time pass by as I often hear from many who let the opportunity of joining slip by.

    I'm considering going into the Military for a few reasons but I am hesitant and unsure.. college isn't the best option for me. I want to make my country, my town, my family, and myself proud and prove that I am capable of being in the doing well in the military. What advice can you give me if my ultimate goal is to serve this great country and become a teacher?

    • @yourmilitarymoney
      @yourmilitarymoney  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've always said that if college isn't for us now, then enlisting is a great option. You can learn discipline, structure, teamwork, a job in the military and get work experience. As you mature, you can continue in the military or you can do something else (like teaching). You'll get great educational experience and most of all, you will have served our great country. Good luck!

      +Mattie Walker I can touch on this. I wanted to go into the AF right outta high school but between my parents and baseball i went to college. It really wasn't for me. Just being in the classroom and a bunch of immature party hard kids didn't catch me. Andddd I wasted $8,000 in the process hahaha. Like he said. College definitely for everyone. especially right outta high school. now i'm waiting to ship out in April.

    Hi, I've just enlisted in the USMC and I'm hoping to work with the FBI in the future. A friend in the MC suggested the Air Force to me, since strategical analysis and planning is practiced more through higher tech, and he said that would be more beneficial if planning to work with the FBI. I've just started to look into the Air Force with an open mind, any advice? Thanks!

    • @yourmilitarymoney
      @yourmilitarymoney  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Since you've already committed to the Marine Corps, begin there and do a great job. If you still decide to pursue the Air Force in the future, speak with a recruiter. However, I believe your Marine experience will still put you in a good situation for the FBI. My recommendation is that you review the FBI employment website to see what their requirements are. I believe my friend worked for // or has knowledge about the FBI and I will speak with her to see what she knows. If that's the case, I'll get back to you again.

      Being away from family is part of the job. However, the benefits are great. You'll need to have a family care plan during times that you'll be away from your child. Research and see if it's a good fit for you.
