    Nakakamiss mag folk dance! Simula elementary hanggang 1st yr college nag folk dance ako.

    The Bayanihan Dance Company has long been a repository of Philippine folk dance. It’s gratifying to know its alumni continue to preserve the Bayanihan dance and music legacy. 🇵🇭 One difference I’ve noticed between Latin American folk dances and the Spanish-influenced Philippine folk dances is the latter show the gentleness of the Filipinas and their menfolk, while Latin American steps seem more fiery and aggressive, as shown in their flamenco-like stance and footwork. (Philippine ethnic tribal dances are another story.) Just my own personal observation, having lived closely with both Philippine and Latino cultures.

    Singkil is the classiest, most elegant Filipino dance. It makes you remember how in pre-spanish times, there was once a flourishing culture of beauty and color - umbrellas, fans and costumes galore! Sadly, it’s almost never seen today. We have embraced the ways of the west so much we can only see this vanishing rich tradition and culture in rare performances of the Bayanihan. Kudos Bayanihan!

      @@ProximaCentauri88 true our hispanic dances are all uniquely Filipino. they mix indigenous and western styles. The Roman Empire lasted only around 3 Centuries. If it took that long to consider Roman Culture unique, then the Culture that we developed since the formation of Las Islas Filipinas should be considered unique to us and no one else.

    My favourite part is Kuratcha, those are genuine flirting on stage. Younger performers could learn from the "old school" dancers how kuratcha should be danced. I'm from Leyte and they do dance it this way, well minus the money part. And singkil, Wow ate Meng beautiful as always.

    BAYANIHAN - the National Dance Company of the Philippines
    Bayanihan, the National Dance Company of the Philippines, takes its name from the word Bayan, which means “town”, “community” or “country”. Bayanihan literally means “being in the community”. Bayanihan culture derives from that meaning: “being helpful in the community, being one of those people who are working together to achieve a common goal”
    In 1956, Dr. Helena Z. Benitez founded the Bayanihan Folk Dance Group of the Philippine Women’s University with a national goal to preserve and promote Philippine culture. The dance troupe became a global sensation in its international debut at the 1958 Brussels World’s Fair.
    In their 3rd world tour, the Bayanihan Folk Dance Group performed in Canada at the 5th Vancouver International Festival, July 10 - August 18, 1962.
    Since then, Bayanihan has performed in six continents, 77 countries, and 700 cities plus worldwide, and counting.
    Bayanihan has brought pride to the Philippines many times over by showcasing the beauty of the Philippines and the story of the Filipinos through its music and exquisite dances.
    The Filipino Edition talks with Suzie Moya Benitez, PhD, Trustee and Executive Director of the Bayanihan Folk Arts Foundation, the Home of Bayanihan, the National Dance Company of the Philippines.

    Is there a digital recording of Bayanihan's music? It used to be that they sold vinyl LPs but the quality of the recording was not so good. Are they selling updated version of their music? With the so-called Filipino Diaspora and the demand for community cultural shows in different parts of the world, I'm sure there is a market for those recordings.

    • @richardcogbill6791
      @richardcogbill6791 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Monitor records put out about 7 long play recordings of their music from live dance performances. Bayanihan, Bayanihan 2, Bayanihan Sings, Bayanihan 4, Bayanihan On Tour, Bayanihan 6 , Bayanihan 7. There is also A Bayanihan Christmas. These recordings are rare nowadays. The few reproduced CDs of these recordings are not of the best quality and are not from the original masters if you can even find them online today.
      I remember listening to the vinyl records back in the 60s and 70s through our hi-fidelity four speaker Magnavox stereo system.
      The instruments were so clear and you could hear the dancers footsteps in the recordings. These recordings I think were some of the best recorded repository of Philippine music out there. Sadly, I think during martial law under Marcos some things were lost including the masters of these recordings. I think Monitor Records may have been an American or UK company. They had a whole catalog of international ethno-musicology, but I don't think they are still in business. We used to find and purchase these Bayanihan recordings at Tower Records on Sunset Blvd when I grew up in L.A.
      I'm happy to say this performance and music is very close to the old Monitor recordings and the performances our family would see on a few occasions when the dance company appeared in Los Angeles on tour. This sure brings back memories. I woukd have loved to see this performance in person, having not seen a Bayanihan show in decades.

    • @richardcogbill6791
      @richardcogbill6791 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      P.S. There is also a recorded entire performance film produced in the 60s.
      It's out there in libraries on the west coast. I saw it years ago on video checked out from the L.A. County Public Library system. The L.A. City Public Library may have copies too. Hopefully it was transferred to DVD.
      This 2015 alumni performance is definitely comes close to that 1960s performance in music and dance. Not rushed. Check numerous Library systems on the west coast, especially ones with large Filipino communities and I'm sure you will find that 1960s/70s performance so beautifully done in this video.

      A Bayanihan fan here since I was a kid learning about my filipino culture. This is a reproduction of some of the earlier dance performances in the 60s & 70s.
      It has a nicer pace. In the 80s they started speeding up their performances to fit in more material per performance. The Monitor recordings of Bayanihan performances in the 60s & 70s of course have the same nice, not rushed pacing.

    • @richardcogbill6791
      @richardcogbill6791 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This a reproduction of 50+ year old performance. Even the costumes are reproduced from the old filmed performance that you can find in the video or DVD section at sone west coast libraries. The pacing is actually slower and nice compared to the company's performances in the 80s and 90s where they really sped up the pacing of their shows to get in more material. I prefer this old pacing of their performances.
