    Transference is my favorite Spoon album. It came out when I was 15 and hearing such a passionate, experiential album during my "music is my life" stage really resonated with me. The cover speaks to that age so well. I remember cutting it out of a magazine ad and hanging it up on my wall. I still have it (framed now), it didn't even occur to me that it's been 10 years. It feels like the album has always been with me

    • @hooks4638
      @hooks4638 ปีที่แล้ว

      I love them all so so much, but if I was forced I could get away with just 3. Kill the Moonlight, Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga, and They Want My Soul. (Really narrowing things down, huh.)

    • @QuillPGall
      @QuillPGall ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HotStrange Gimme fiction is honestly the one album from their 2000s run that’s just “really good” to me and not “great” or “fantastic.” i enjoy most of the songs and there are plenty of highlights (I Turn My Camera On, My Mathematical Mind, Was it You?, Sister Jack, and others), but more often than not, the melodies and hooks aren’t as sticky to me as most of kill the moonlight or ga ga ga ga ga. still a solid album though!

    You absolutely nail the analysis here. By breaking the record down to the ways it breaks the Spoon pattern you highlight why this is such an underrated gem. It's a really clear, systemic approach. The observations about unconventional production are spot on, especially cataloguing all of the odd drops, cuts, mixes, etc. This remains my favourite Spoon record, in part because it's so unique, ornery, and wears its heart on its sleeve. Really impressed with this breakdown!

    I'm glad to see this video again. The original got me into Spoon, and they've since become one of my all time favorites. I like all the Spoon albums I've heard so far, but I _love_ Transference. I think a lot of people have a harder time with Transference because it's not like the rest of the albums, whereas I have a harder time with the rest of the albums because they aren't like Transference. It's never sounded weird to me, and the lyrics are much more accessible to me because of how direct they are. Thank you MicTheSnare for getting me into this band!

    The trio from The Mystery Zone > Who Makes Your Money > Written In Reverse might be the best back to back to back in their catalog, and that’s saying something.

    • @logan4x6
      @logan4x6 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Shit, even how, “Before Destruction”, “Is Love Forever?”, &, “The Mystery Zone” flow into each other. “Before Destruction”, really sets the scene with its sludgy drums, eerie & depressing mellotrons & keyboards, and very demo-like production, which is in a way counteracted by the fast abrasive guitars, bouncy drums, and harsh vocals on, “Is Love Forever?”, which is then abruptly cut off with loud, in-your-face vocals that are echoed beside these relentlessly hard-hitting guitar & drums, which transitions right into, “The Mystery Zone”, which just hypnotically pulls you in to said mystery zone, following a similar pace that just pumps you up like, “Is Love Forever?”, yet literally mystifies you with its engaging and sometimes confusing lyricism, absolutely captivating & haunting keys, and driving bass & guitar.
      … This album has consumed too much of me, perhaps haha. But damn, it’s so incredible.

      Yeah, the ‘’magical mystery tour” was brash and strange, it pissed people off. People that hated the Beatles saw them now saw them going after younger fans with the child-like lyrics & imagery, and fans thought they were just selling out or cashing in on what made Peppers good.
      But I think enough time has evolved that it’s surpassed Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band based on the merits of it contents.
      ‘Transference’ is more of an ‘Abbey Road’

    I really liked this video. I think it's important as in my opinion, while Spoon is lauded by critics and audiences alike, they are still somewhat slept on as a serious artistic endeavor. I enjoyed the way you meshed production/songwriting dissection with pondering the psychology or creative motive behind such decisions, and (refreshingly) without lapsing into how brilliant or effective any of these decisions necessarily are. This is what good music criticism looks like.

    Transference is one of my top Spoon records (hard to top GIRLS CAN TELL). I happened to like their approach to the sound in these tracks and how they recorded this album, the same way NIN did for 'With Teeth'...as a whole band. While there may be less intricate arrangements (especially in the guitar tracks) I like how it relies on Britt's gritty voice to carry us on this journey. Written in Reverse is probably my TOP Spoon song (for this second). The mixing IS friggin weird though in places, would love to get the master tapes and remix them myself lol

      Yo where do I get the TCR mix?? Always been annoyed by how much I would've liked that one if not for the mixing. Also imo the album version of Mystery Zone is better, I like the abrupt cut a lot more, feels more chilling

    Thanks so much for spending so much time on this (my favorite) Spoon record.
    I think your take is complete correct, and Nobody Get's Me But You and Transference are the keys to this album.
    Two quibbles, one of fact one of opinion:
    1. “Who makes your money” is their first foray into minimalist funk? Um… “I Turn My Camera On” ring a bell?
    2. Spoon has made a so-so record. It's called Gimme Fiction. It has 5 unbelievable songs and 6 mediocre ones. At some point, Spoon fans are going to realize this. It's probably going to take another 15 years, but when that day comes...

    GOAT Band for me too. Every record is so consistent yet they always manage to come up with new tricks while mantaining their unique signature sound.

    Transference, to me, is like Fable of the Reconstruction by REM. It's an album that needs to be really listened to intently and repeatedly. It took me a while to get this album and it was "Out Go The Lights" that really pulled me into it. It's fantastic and underrated.
