I'm in the process of scheduling a similar procedure and after watching several videos on here, started rethinking everything. I was starting to believe no one had a positive outcome. Your calm and uplifting attitude... thoughtful information, etc have put me at ease and I feel back on track. Thank you for sharing your experience and valuable information. Hope all has continued to go well for you.
I just had this procedure done 4 days ago. After watching your video, I felt assured I made the right decision. The pain I had has disappeared. Thanks for your positive attitude. It's a great help.
@@derekspratt Hi, I am 36 and doctors were thinking to operate me with this type of surgery if my pain does not go away with exercise etc. One question i had during the discussion was that doing this surgery it put the discs above and below in pressure. This increases the chances of disc compression in the above/below areas. Especially if one is still young at the time of surgery. What are your thoughts on this? (long term post surgery).
Me to! I thought I was the only one that was freaked out by the surgery I'm having February 11th…lol every time I think about it I have a bad feeling. This video does help. Thanks! Now if I only knew if my surgeon knows what he's doing.???
@@JoseLuisRodriguez-nn4vc yes, in Feb...I am still in pain. Still need pain meds, still have to limit what I do...I don't think I will ever get total relief.
Thank you again. I do have terrible sciatica since the attack that injured me, but seeing you 2 weeks post op gives me much hope. I do have one of the top surgeons in the US, now I’m just praying for the insurance to approve everything.
I can't thank you enough for this extremely informational video...I was involved in a hit and run Ja. 27th of this year, a man on meth rear ended me at 50 mph and left me with a L5/S1 injury that requires a level 1 fusion...my surgery is Dec. 27th and I'm scared to death...I'm 36, a mother of 3 and was very active prior to the injury. Your video calmed me, it allowed me to take a deep breath and find some hope and took away some fear...thank you. Amy~ Oklahoma.
Hi amy from Oklahoma, this is shannon from grand prairie tx, not sure what exactly type of fusion my doc. Is going to perform yet but he told me I have 4 or 5 levels of disc. Degen.😔 ...not very happy I'm in pain 24 7 the minute I get on my feet and start walking I'm in immense amount of pain...jyst curious how your surgery went and if you think you made right decision with the surgery...thanks amy...
Thank you so much for this video! I'm 42 yrs old and scheduled for July 17th, 2012. I first injured my back 17 years ago, and most recently for a 2nd major time May 15th. I feel not only validated by the surgeon after 17 years of being told therapy, medicine, living in pain more than days not that I have hope. I am so thankful to you for posting this encouraging video-everything that I just googled came up negative, so after searching on here, well, you have me really positive now.
Thank you so much for this. I was brutally assaulted 3 months ago and was severely injured. I need the surgery you had as a result of the attack I endured, and I am so relieved to see this video. Thank you so, so much.
Great to see you are doing well. Just had a micro discectomy on Thursday and after 3 days am feeling great. Back surgery has come along way in the last 15 years. The pain and loss of the use of my left leg was way worse than the surgery. No pain meds and no pain and able to walk straight after just 3 days.
I am now 1 year out and I am fortunate that my pain has resolved 100%. You must have nerve root impingement ongoing if your pain is present. One of the tricky things is getting a solid diagnosis pre surgery in terms of definitively identifying the source of the pain. I cannot speak to the details of your condition as I am not a surgeon and don't know any of your specific details. I am sorry to hear of your ongoing pain.
How are you holding up now ? I am only 23 and this is my last option. I have similar discogenic pain at L5-S1 and am amazed that you were able to last as long as you did without surgery.
@@slimpickins4268 I’m 55 and have also lived with this prob started feeling real bad pain at the age of 33 mid 30s lived on pain med and injections. While doing Ironwork and doing bodybuilding shows and powerlifting I should have backed off everything but I did Jay the opposite I say this Don’t not listen to ur body. Train smart work smart.. I met with my Dr and am setting up the same surgery for October.. I’m still in the gym 4-5 days a week but takes me 2-3 hrs in the morning to get moving around and the little jobs now hurt. Like putting a kids bike together..
This was extremely helpful as I'm going in next week for a L4-L5 spinal fusion. The pain for the last 60 days has been the worse Ive experienced. Ive been on Gabapentine with some relief but not that much I really appreciated your candidness . Thanks!
Gabpentine, pregabalin. That stuff never helped me. Had L4 L5 discectomy and 4 months later cat scan revealed a small fracture on my vertebrae. Going for L4 L5 fushon soon. Glad it helped you. Nothing helped me except oxy but it just took my mind off the pain more than anything. Pain has been unreal for the past 2 years for me .
Update post surgery 1 week: Surgery ended up L3`L4-L5 fusion. Tremendous pain day one but day two much better. Have stayed off narcotics from day two and now still have some pain (4-6) but periodically. Can seen improvement each day. This is not for the faint of heart but better that pre-surgery. Keep moving each day and get enough rest. Oh, I added Tylenol 3 times a day. Seems to help. I’m 74.
Hi Derek. Thank you for posting this. I intend to do the same with my journey. I’m 36. I’ve suffered horrid pain in the same area for a long time. I was a bodybuilder and a soldier. I’ve put my body through a lot. I’m scheduled for ALIF plus disc replacement and dynamic prosthesis in early December. It’s such a gory procedure. But seeing these surgeons in action is like high end mechanics. We’re nuts and bolts - I’ve finally got some great surgeons. I had to go through 8 to find them. I’m looking at 6-8 months longer off work. My job is physically intense, whether they’ll let me back after I don’t know. But I can’t live like this. For anyone reading this who feels like me - pinpoint the nerve, find a good pain specialist and ask for a cryorhyzotomy until you have the op. At least then every day won’t feel like hell on earth.
Hi Derek, thanks for posting! I just had a unilateral TLIF this past Wednesday and was very encouraged to see the videos you posted. By the way, I also ride a bicycle and am glad to hear that I'm not the only one that high goals of rising before the end of the year. Please keep posting your progress.
Thank you so much for posting this.... I have had 2 back surgeries and was just told today that I am facing another fusion. Needless to say, this is distressing. My earlier experience on line looking for information had been kinda scary...lots of major complaints and scary postings but at 60 years old -- I just cant accept where I am (mobility-wise) right now and need to try what I can to get my ability to walk/hike/bike back. YOu have given me confidence in continuing down this road.
Thank You , your video gave me a sense of relief , I`m having pretty much the same surgery in 2 weeks and it was a nice to see you standing there so enthusiastic, very well done , thanks again
Thank you so much I had a very similar surgery and I’m so fed up with people posting how much pain there in and can’t do anything, I was home in two days
Paul Neugass Yes, we'd like to know how you're doing as you haven't posted anything, thanks a lot, real helpful there aren't ya!!! This guy post he's having surgery and then disappears like a ghost....
Thank you - so soothing and reassuring. I was terrified when I got told I neeeded it on the 23rd December but your video has made me realise it can be okay and not scarey. Thank you.
@@fooyeeming5778 hi I got surgery they recorded it and had it linked to doctors in asia. All I know is that they made 2 cuts in my left side 1 was 5 in 1 6 in then a laminectomy in the back they said it was like jacking up a car and putting spacers in my spine then locking it down instead of fusing it but they put cages in the front of my spine I know its almost 4 weeks and still killing me
Thank you for a positive video and not doing a woe-is-me video. I am less than 2 months away from a MIS TLIF 4-5 - just one level. I plan on having the same results you had. No one expects to be pain-free, but if I can just get my life back, my legs back, I will be eternally grateful.
I just had this surgery done L4-L5 Tlif done in Vancouver on April 29Th recovery is going well. All that he says is 100%. I am 1 week post op and feeling good. Keep up with the meds, they are essential.
Wow, I love when I come across success stories such as yours. Going in for a fusion of the L3,4 & 5 in 5 days. I'm 65 and have been driving a truck for 15 years. My dr said I'd be able to get behind the wheel again but I read so many bad things about this that I've gotten terrified, however your story gives me great hope for a full recovery!
I am about to have this surgery and want to thank you for your experience as i am of course a little scared of the out come . You have given me more confidence and sincerely thank you. God Bless
Thanks mate , this is the great , I will have the same op in six weeks after injury at work 15 months ago . I have been the fighting of my life with insurance company and being sent to the wrongs doctors . I now have a top surgeon who is going to fix me and I trust him . I am aware that's it's gonna be slow and I have to be patient. I'm a fighter and will be back stronger 👍
Thank you kind sir.. I'm going in for this sugary in a couple of weeks. I was very worried and on the fence about doing it. I feel better after watching this video.
Thanks for pointing this. My husband just had this surgery. He is having more pain from it but I'm trying to educate myself to be able to help him so thank you 😊🙏
Your recovery is astonishing, had the same thing done 2 weeks ago (this is 2nd fusion, 1st didn’t take). I’m mobile but small, short walks with cane, no way I could do a video like you just did and I’m 35. I was told I would have a hard recovery (8-10 months) because of my past medical history, but I thought/hoped I would be farther along at this point. Well thanks for showing us all up lol, glad your doing well.
I don't think there is anything wrong with you taking longer to recover as the underlying condition, surgery and such is all quite individual. I am a hyper-active type of person and I was pushing myself pretty hard in the 1st few weeks - likely on an adrenaline rush of sorts. I was very lucky to be able to get back on my feet that quickly. I wish you all the best with your own recovery - I know you'll be extra careful to give you spine time to fuse properly before putting bend/lift/twist stresses on it.
Thanks for responding, that’s really nice of you! Mine was 4 years in the making after a car accident, had an ALIF at L5-S1 about 2.5 years ago. The fusion didn’t take and I was basically disabled with pain. Then my new surgeon discovered movement at the fusion, did a diagnostic injection, then we decided surgery was an option. Good news is pain feels different, and my leg issues seem to be better. Bad news is my recovery seems so much slower than the first surgery. But definitely staying away from actions that would slow the recovery. Well cheers sir, thanks again for responding, and I hope your recovery keeps going well!
Wow. I asked The Lord for guidance and just at the beginning- when you said-minimally invasive and seeing your post surgery status is inspiring. You’re the best looking post up surgery patient- I’ve ever seen. Thanks 🙏
Thank you so much. I will have the same surgery and I am so grateful for your words of encouragement. You have done a great thing to ask your son to work on this project with you. The collaborative experience is unmatchable. I will heed your advice to move conservatively and as soon as possible. Instinct tells me this is right.
I know this video is old, but I am so glad I came across it. I am facing the same surgery as you have had. I’ve suffered for 2-1/2 years. I have found a wonderful neurologist. I see him on August 8th 2024. I have access to see my MRI, really didn’t know what I was looking at, but since you have shared your MRI photos, I have a better understanding of what is going on in my back. I hope all this time later you are doing continued wellness
im six years post op and live in agony i had same levels fused with interbody cages . i now live on oxyconton 100mg a day plus many other drugs im happy yours went well
Thank you for posting your story. Got TLIF surgery at L5/S1 in a few weeks. Your testimony has made me feel less apprehensive. Thank you and hoping all continues to go well for you!
I had L4 L5 on May 13 2019 and I have more pain now than I did before surgery.....I used to walk 5 miles now I am lucky if I walk a mile......happy for you...I am now seeing a surgeon in Boston....I have been in pain for a year.
Thank you for this video. I am having the same durgery one month from today. L3 -L5. I am also having surgery for spinal stenoses. I am much more relaxed now after having seen your video. There are so many stories of how terribel the pains are aftetwards. Thank you for sharing.
Good information, and reassuring to hear a positive report about this procedure... I’m about a month away from a three level fusion (ALIF&PLIF) after many years of dealing with back pain. I’m nervous, but now, a little excited to know I can get some relief
Which levels are you getting fused: S1-L3? The highest motion segment is L4-5 and if you fuse S1-L5 and L3-L4 in addition you'll have less flexibility but it won't be a ton less than what I now have.
Thank you! Im in Salem, Oregon and had a L-5 S1 lamindectomy on August 2nd and two weeks later was in excruciating pain again. I felt wonderful and like I had my life back after 14 years and then BAM! Gone again. I had pushed myself so hard playing with my five kiddos since I have never been able to, gardening, cleaning, things I have taken for granted for so long...and I re-did the damage to my disc and it is now worse. My doctor Julie York is going to be doing my TLIF on August 24th and I cannot wait, I am nervous but anxious to not have to rely on all of the pain meds to keep me pain free. I want my life back, I am only 37 and have been hindered by back pain since my teenage years. Thank you again, your video was not only reassuring but also refreshing to know that these procedures are performed safely here in the Nortwest too.
Thank You. I am having a fusion of my L3-L4-L5 -S1 and spacers will be placed between both my Facets joints. Love the positive update. My surgeon did a C3-C4 2 years ago on me. Happy so say it was a complete success. I agree a good surgeon is the key!
Thanks for posting. I'm glad you had such great results. I am meeting with my Neurosurgeon November 5th to discuss surgery. For me, it is also L4 L5 S1, I've been experiencing severe sciatica down my right leg as often as every 4 months. The last time it happened I had to stand for 2 days straight, leaning on my cane. I couldnt sit or lay down, which meant I couldnt even have my husband take me to the hospital, there was NO way I could sit in the car, nor call an ambulance, as I couldnt lay down
Excellent video. Thank you for taking the time to post. I am 4 weeks out from an L5-S1 MIS TLIF and have experienced much of what you describe. I agree that in the hands of a competent surgical team it is worth having the surgery if one's pain has gotten to the level you describe. My procedure took place at Yale-New Haven Hospital and was performed by Dr. Maxwell Scott Laurans.
I am exactly one week post op right now, and I am already feeling so much better. thank you for posting your video, to give others a positive outlook, on a rather scary procedure. I mean I know I was scared prior to my operation. I am a 26 year old mother of two... so any surgery that could potentially take me away from my duties, is a scary thought. :) But I ma doing very well.
A great explanation, with a very positive outlook - thank you. I am just recovering from an L4/L5 Fusion - your recovery a bit faster than mine, but I too am also feeling positive. Agree getting off the Opoids was an experience!!
thank you for posting this, it was really informative and helpful as I approach my own surgery. To be honest, more helpful than a lot of the post operative care from medical people on youtube, like about the meds and constipation etc..
I'm 2 weeks post l4/5 fusion with screws. Feeling very good. This is my 4th op. The first at l3/4, laminectomy wasn't good enough. 4 years later MRI was the same as before and I had a minimal l3/4 fusion. Unluckily 4 years later I had a slipped sideways disc at l4/5. That was dealt with and 2 years later I've had the posterior fusion AND I feel so much better. All my pain was in the legs, so I'm looking forward to walking along the beach. My worst pain was from days 2 - 4, the hamstring having been disturbed meant I couldn't put any weight on the right leg.... getting up from the bed or toilet was the most painful thing I'd ever experienced. But it passed. On my way to being healthy, great to see a good report of having a fusion.
Thank you so much Derek. I'm 49 years old and have had back pain for about 20 years. (I was a runner and athletic in all areas) It's now at the point of chronic pain and has been for almost 2 years. I am scheduled to have a similar surgery as you in August. My Doctor is talking about going in from the front and the back which freaks me out a bit. My L4-L5 is narrowing and my L5-S-1 is bone on bone with spondylolisthesis which is fused. In addition I have bilateral pars fractures at L5. Your video is so encouraging I can't thank you enough for sharing your positive experience. I'm confident in my Surgeon. I'm worried about the pain afterward. I have a hard time taking pain meds especially Demerol. God willing I will get through this with flying colors and be mobile very quickly as I have a 9 year old daughter who is very active. Not to mention the fact that I can't sit still and miss all the activities I used to enjoy. I'm pretty nervous but must go into this with a positive attitude, which you have helped me with! Thanks again!!!
Shell Belle Trust your surgeon and don't worry about the recovery/pain issues. My argument is that you are involved in chronic pain now and nothing is worse than that. You'll be immediately on your way towards a healthier future. Yes, the first few weeks can be tough but you will power through it. I am 100% now and it is a strange indeed as I had 25 years that were occasionally really terrible and never great. I very much hope you will also get there and be able to fully enjoy parenting which is a blessing.
This video was very informative, and gives me hope! I'm due to get tlif surgery on my L5-S1 disc Jan 28th (only 18 days away!)... I'm only 33, & my L5-S1disc looks almost exactly like yours in your pre-op MRI.I've had horrible chronic pain for almost 5 years, and am excited to have finally found a surgeon that wants to do more than just treat symptoms. I'm praying my surgery is as successful as yours, so I can get back to working as a hairstylist, a career I've invested 13 years of my life into, and get back to being the active wife & mom I used to be. Thanks again for your videos, they're very encouraging!
+Marsi Fox Any idea how your spine ended up looking like mine? In my case I am pretty sure that I damaged my back in my teen years and it basically slowly degraded after that - with increasing ability to 'pop out' and cause significant pain and inflammation. Between the age of 30 and 45 it progressively got worse and worse. If I hadn't got this resolved I think I would have fallen into a deep depression. All the best - I think you are going to be amazed how much better you will feel in 6 months time.
@@jaym1244 I am 3 weeks Monday post surgery, stitches come out this Thursday. Only using Walker when I go on longer walks, cane is very helpful at this point. Not a lot of pain, more discomfort from the incision it self. I am a hairdresser so hoping I can go back to work at 6 weeks, tine will tell.
I’m 9 weeks post surgery just like yours. It was the best decision I made. All my pre-surgery pain, numbness and tingling are gone, and I feel better than I have in 3 years. Mine was a success but I did do all exercises and walk 4X a day. With this surgery, walking often is important and speeds up recovery.
Great presentation, just about makes me want to have one also, I am happy to see you on your feet so soon. There will be no sweeping the lane until I personally give the OK.
I had the same opperation done in Nov 2011.My pain is as bad as before the opp. I cannot stand in the one position on hard ground for more than 10 mins without getting serious stabbing pain in my back.I do lots of exercises swimming and cycling plus taking lots of pain killers. So I find it difficult to see how you can say your opp. was a success just 2 weeks post opp.
Derek Spratt I'm glad I'm getting both done at once instead of one at a time. Those two levels are shot but l3-l4 is healthy, similar to yours. I just can't wait to be done with this. My nerve pain is terrible and I hope to have relief.
It is surprising how much damage lifting 25 pounds over your head could do! Seriously though, thanks for sharing this Derek. You look great - glad to know you are feeling great too! Here's hoping for many healthy decades ahead.
Good information! I just had spinal fusion surgery June 16 2021, L3-L4 and L4-L5 levels. First 2 weeks were brutal. I'm starting to turn the corner now.
i appreciate your video about the surgery because my mum will be having the surgery next month and i am really nervous and scared about it. this video made me feel at ease a bit.
Thank you Derek, I went into ER after right leg & foot went numb, ER Doc. did some L/R feeling comparison, was going to send me home, my Doc called and ordered an MRI...Bingo, surgery sched. L4&5 one blew out, on Meds over weekend, will consult with surgeon Mon @ 9am but, for sure, away we go. Very much appreciate your video, I had a prostectomy so I know the Med. drill and mindful it will be different with this procedure, i.e., go EZ on BM's & yes, try to get active ASAP. Best 2U!
Thank you for sharing this, it's very comforting to know that there's a good outcome. I had injured my spine 9 years ago from nursing ( C2, 3, 4, 5) L4, L5, S1. I wasn't allowed to go back to work and have since given up on any nursing type or work. I'm currently getting a facet injection on my lower lumbar, L4, L5 and S1 to relieve the pain and my neck to be done later on. The medication is not working anymore so I'm on a wait list to have this procedure done. It's comforting to know that recovery won't take a long time. Of course it varies with every individual. The more fit and active a person the faster ones heal. You look fairly fit. I now have more confidence to getting this done. I'm not sure when it will happen, the wait list is a year. My pain has increased and I'm told that I can get a MBB and rhizotomy for symptomatic improvement done while waiting for this surgery since my injections is no longer effective.
There are a few things that you can try and see if they will move you up the wait list. They watch for bowel/bladder function and depression from chronic pain. You might mention some of these factors if they are an issue for you. Worked for me. Good luck.
@@derekspratt Thank you my doctor did mention that and if that happens then I am to go to emergency. I had that planned too. I know these days that's the only way to get things done fast, when it's an emergency.
Thank you so much for this video! I have the same area potentially being fused. Your surgery was almost 8 years ago-how are you doing now???? Thanks again!
My back has generally been great, thank you. I have occasionally done stupid things and have irritated the area but when I start to feel a burning sensation I know I have to back off and let it rest
Thank you so much for doing these videos. I am going to have a tlif fusion of L5-S1 in about a month and am nervous about it. It helps seeing your videos and how good you are doing.
Michael Santos Be calm and look forward to feeling stronger and younger again post op. Be focused on your recovery, invest heavily into it, and expect a few tough patches but you will get thru it. All the best.
Play 4 Keeps Oh, I missed your question. Sorry. How did your surgery go? I was in on a Friday morning and out on the Monday morning. Being calm pre surgery is good.
I am 17 days out of a MIS TLIF S1 L5 fusion, will probably need L5-L4 down the road. Grade 2 Spondyliolisthesis* (Facet joints were fractured/broken) I had terrible sciatica, local pain, and foot drop. Other organ issues as well. I was completely exhausted before the end of every day even while I was stationary. The surgery has brought my lower joints back to center and my feet face forward now while I walk. Most painful thing I've ever experienced..Truly a miracle surgery, I cannot wait for the bone to finish growing. I had it on my 30th birthday, stay out of the military, kids. Cheers
I have an apt tomorrow with a doctor who does this procedure and I am hoping and praying he will do it for me. Been suffering for far too long and have no quality of life anymore. I am very nervous about seeing him, afraid he will say he cant do it or something to that affect. Pray for me and thx for the video it does sound like a good procedure
Well done, partner. I just got the surgery a week ago. Was done a little differently than yours. It does appear you had been educated by the surgeon, well. I have a very good medical background and unfortunately, without it, I don't feel my "team (from physical to hospital staff)" would have provided me with the knowledge you have. It is good proof that there is great medical treatment in Canada. I did not react well to either the anesthesia or the anti-biotics as, I had bouts of vomiting on both my hospital stays. My biggest issue is the inability to sleep well. I am not a fan of the pain pills but, you have encouraged me to utilize them a bit more to help the process. I also enjoyed hearing your discussing on walking as a help towards the numbness I have been having.
Sounds like rough week 1 post surgery. My mom reacts to meds the way you do to, making post post surgical drugs less tolerant. I felt crappy on the drugs too but didn't puke. How are you doing now?
+Derek Spratt I'm not sure if the other message post. I increased my walking a few days ago and noticed I was in a bit of discomfort during the evening. The doctor's office adjusted my meds so I'm more comfortable now. Today I was delivered a spinal stim stimulator to facilitate the bone fusion. Were you given this device to aid in your healing process?
I had on L4-L5 lumbars and a disc replacement 2 1/2 weeks ago and feel great, one night in the hospital, first 2 days were hard, first week was getting better every day, I used a walker on my first week to support and not to rush. I had 3 incisions, one on my abdomen to replace the disc and 2 on my back to stabilize my lumbars, the surgeon glued the incisions. Surgery went well :)
Hi Derek, I had the same surgery a month go. I fell at work 7 yrs ago & always said no ones touching my back nor my neck. Well time told a different story, in 2013 I had cervical 3-4-5 fusion & a month ago I had L4-L5-S1 done. I thank God & my Doctor I'm doing well. Im not as mobil as you but I think that has to do with a little accident I had at home 2 wks after surgery. I have some nerve problem on my rt leg but its getting better. I cant wait to be all better to go out to the park & run around with my grandsons.
Just remember that you are experiencing inflammation in addition to the injury of the surgery itself and it will be a few more months of discomfort before that initial 'insult' to your body drops enough to start feeling a lot better. 2 steps forward, 1 backwards (your recent 'accident') is normal. I slipped, and tripped, and fell a few times too. I also pushed to far, too fast, more than once, and paid for it dearly (easily a week setback each time). And you have also had cervical work done which is pretty intense too. Take the long view, don't expect too much, too soon. I wish for the best for you. Pls provide an update ...
I'm in the process of scheduling a similar procedure and after watching several videos on here, started rethinking everything. I was starting to believe no one had a positive outcome. How are you doing now??? I am so nervous about doing this....
I am jumping in on your dialog. I am 8 years post surgery and still pain free so I feel blessed
Still doing great. On March 13th have follow up appointment with neurosurgeon. Painfree.....

I am so very grateful for this informational video. Your precise and positive language is getting me through my pre-surgery anxiety.
Thank you so much for this. I was brutally assaulted 3 months ago and was severely injured. I need the surgery you had as a result of the attack I endured, and I am so relieved to see this video. Thank you so, so much.
I am so sorry!
I am going to see a neurosurgeon on Tues, about surgery... not sure what kind, but this came up when I listed my symptoms.
Derek Spratt have you lost mobility or are you able to continue exercises you did before?
How are you holding up now ? I am only 23 and this is my last option. I have similar discogenic pain at L5-S1 and am amazed that you were able to last as long as you did without surgery.
That’s what it’s all about! Wow! Hope that’s my results too! Go Canucks! We have several relatives in Canada!
Thank you for the positive comments! Having a tlif tomorrow morning and your video had a calming effect on me.
Please post an update. Hoping it went well.
At least then every day won’t feel like hell on earth.
great comment. Thx!
Thanks so much for your tips and video!! This has helped me feel better about my L4-S1 fusion I'll be getting in May!
@Teresa Tagliarini hope u are doing great. . Did u have the surgery? I might be facing the surgery myself. It is very painful
At 70 I understand. We still want a physical life. Such a positive outlook on fusion.
I had the surgery last week.
Thanks for the report, Derek. I'm having the same surgery tomorrow morning and hope I come out with 'grace' like you!
Please post your own experience, either here or in your own videos (please link to them here for our benefit). Best of luck. 'Be strong like a bull'.
how did it go Paul?
Paul Neugass It's a year now,,, how are you ?
Paul Neugass Yes, we'd like to know how you're doing as you haven't posted anything, thanks a lot, real helpful there aren't ya!!! This guy post he's having surgery and then disappears like a ghost....
Thank you - so soothing and reassuring. I was terrified when I got told I neeeded it on the 23rd December but your video has made me realise it can be okay and not scarey. Thank you.
Hi , I am 51 and having Facet joint fusion of the L4-L5 S1 level. Loved your video. Hope I come out this good also and hope to get back to my job.
Hello friend how you doing now??
I’m going to need a fusion in the same spot and I’m really really scared I’m preying it goes this smoothly
Are you ok ? I need same surgery iam afraid
@@williamnoel5077 ,hi William, are you open to lumbar disc replacement (LDR). Many say LDR much much better than fusion.
@@fooyeeming5778 hi I got surgery they recorded it and had it linked to doctors in asia. All I know is that they made 2 cuts in my left side 1 was 5 in 1 6 in then a laminectomy in the back they said it was like jacking up a car and putting spacers in my spine then locking it down instead of fusing it but they put cages in the front of my spine I know its almost 4 weeks and still killing me
Olif,,surgery that's it
@@williamnoel5077 Hi William I’m looking at the same exact surgery did you ever proceed with yours? How are you feeling now?
All the best with your surgery - you deserve great back health!
@@derekspratt
Thank you!
Thank you. I live in Ireland and will require this surgery and you have given me great reassurance.
It's about 1 yr after your comment, how are you doing ? What did you have done exactly ?
I am 8 years post op now and still doing fine. I am blessed.
Wonderful video thank you. I have put this off for so long but am finally getting surgery done. This video has given me hope.
Hope yr doing great
I know this video is old, but I am so glad I came across it.
Same here. This is the best video yet. I'm havong 345 fused on Oct 8th. Im scared. Hope you are doing great
im six years post op and live in agony i had same levels fused with interbody cages . i now live on oxyconton 100mg a day plus many other drugs im happy yours went well
Thank you for posting your story. Got TLIF surgery at L5/S1 in a few weeks. Your testimony has made me feel less apprehensive. Thank you and hoping all continues to go well for you!
best of luck - please post updates on your progress
I had L4 L5 on May 13 2019 and I have more pain now than I did before surgery.....I used to walk 5 miles now I am lucky if I walk a mile......happy for you...I am now seeing a surgeon in Boston....I have been in pain for a year.
Best of luck to you
Thank you for this video.
I had this procedure done 24 days ago. , I made the right decision now I am pain free.
Agree getting off the Opoids was an experience!!
wow im having the exact same thing in 2 wks...you make me feel a lot better about it!
thank you for posting this, it was really informative and helpful as I approach my own surgery. To be honest, more helpful than a lot of the post operative care from medical people on youtube, like about the meds and constipation etc..
Thanks!!! I will soon have this procedure. You have helped calm my fears.
How did your surgery and recovery go? I'm having L 4-5 TLIF iin a few weeks. God bless and keep you well.
Shell Belle how was your surgery, please let us know how it went.
Thanks so much for this video. It is the encouragement I need with surgery a few weeks away
Surgery in 6 weeks, this gives me a good idea what to look forward to, thank you for sharing!
Having mine in 6 weeks, how are you feeling?
Thank you so much for taking time to share your positive experience! I am having my fusion in November so this is encouraging! Be well!
Good luck!!
@angie How did it go?
Great presentation, just about makes me want to have one also, I am happy to see you on your feet so soon. There will be no sweeping the lane until I personally give the OK.
i had a neck surgery 4 months ago and now i have pain on by back , thanks for taking your time to upload the video
Thank you so much. I will be having the same surgery soon. God be with you.
Good information! I just had spinal fusion surgery June 16 2021, L3-L4 and L4-L5 levels. First 2 weeks were brutal. I'm starting to turn the corner now.
This video is very informative and beneficial to us all, thank you for your clear explanation of things, there is hope for me after all.
Thanks Derek
This is a really clear and informative story. Hugely helpful.
Cheers from Australia
i appreciate your video about the surgery because my mum will be having the surgery next month and i am really nervous and scared about it. this video made me feel at ease a bit.
Best 2U!
this was recorded 2 weeks post op? and youre able to stand that long ?
This was excellent. I saw it two weeks post my own surgery, and can understand the whole experience much better.
How was your recovery process?
Derek Spratt Why is it that no one person answers the follow-up question, I don't understand this!!!
Thanks for your input. I am having the procedure in the next three weeks. Once again, thank you!
Thank you for sharing your experience
Thank you so much for this video! I have the same area potentially being fused. Your surgery was almost 8 years ago-how are you doing now???? Thanks again!
My back has generally been great, thank you. I have occasionally done stupid things and have irritated the area but when I start to feel a burning sensation I know I have to back off and let it rest
Thank you for sharing your experience. i'm about to have the same operation.
Your video was great! I had the exact same operation and you helped me prepare and worry free! Thank you!
4 years of pain and narcotics, finally I found a great surgeon to do this exact surgery 4-5-1. Just ready for my life back.
Derek Spratt thanks
Thr good news is they bumped my surgery up to May 1. Any tips going into the surgery? How long was your hospital stay?
Play 4 Keeps Oh, I missed your question. Sorry. How did your surgery go? I was in on a Friday morning and out on the Monday morning. Being calm pre surgery is good.
Morning of surgery and this was great thank you
I am 17 days out of a MIS TLIF S1 L5 fusion, will probably need L5-L4 down the road. Cheers
Hi Derek i happy to hear your doing well after your surgery. Im getting ready for procedure in feb 2019.
Just like yours. Wish me luck.
@James Nava did u have the surgery? How are u feeling? Wish u well
How did it go? I hope you are fully recovered now
I have an apt tomorrow with a doctor who does this procedure and I am hoping and praying he will do it for me.
Thank you for posting. Very helpful explanatory video.
Your video is a life saver for me. Now I only need the gross US medical system to approve my surgery so I can function again.
Awesome video thanks for sharing. Very helpful and encouraging.
I had surgery 12/2/15. Watching your video helped me a great deal. thank you.
+Naturallyme71 How are you doing now, 4 weeks post-op?
+Derek Spratt I'm not sure if the other message post. I increased my walking a few days ago and noticed I was in a bit of discomfort during the evening. The doctor's office adjusted my meds so I'm more comfortable now. Today I was delivered a spinal stim stimulator to facilitate the bone fusion. Were you given this device to aid in your healing process?
Great advice Derek and I really needed to see this video. Decompression surgery did not work for me. Staying active is definitely the key🙏🏽🙏🏽
Please update this video. I’d love to see how ur feeling now
8 years out and I am still fine.
Ty for sharing your story...I'm getting ready to have this surgery n hearing this helps to ease some of my fears..Ty again
Thanks for this. I’m having this surgery done in May 2022. I’m most nervous about pain after surgery. But you have given me hope.
How did your surgery turn out?
I had on L4-L5 lumbars and a disc replacement 2 1/2 weeks ago and feel great, one night in the hospital, first 2 days were hard, first week was getting better every day, I used a walker on my first week to support and not to rush. I had 3 incisions, one on my abdomen to replace the disc and 2 on my back to stabilize my lumbars, the surgeon glued the incisions. Surgery went well :)
Thank you for posting this. I am having the exact surgery in a couple of days and this gives me confident hope for a better future.

Thank you for making me feel better about having surgery 😘
I am very sorry to hear that.
This took a load off of my mind. Thank you so much
You are welcome
Thanks Derek. Very helpful.
Thank you for sharing your story. I'm going in for the same surgery on Monday and am nervous and scared.
Thank you! So much positive vibes here!
Thank you so much for this video. I’m making my decision for the same 2 levels. This is encouraging! Thank you!
