  • Tom Izzo's playcall for a set with a Rub screen for a big, followed into a triple stagger screen for a guard. The last option is a flare screen for the main guard after the triple screen.

Isn't that more of a 1-4 set. Great play and compilation either way,

+ShanghaiBJJ This is Izzo's actual playcall for this set I learned. Definitely not Horns, but he calls his "Horns" series this out of the 1-4 look.

Ultimately there is NO DIFFERENCE between 1-4 High and Horns.
Horns is just either sending the Wings to the Corners and Pulling the Bigs UP 1 step before you would have to do it in a 1-4 High.
A 1-4 High is just sending both Bigs and both Wings to line up Free-Throw Line Extended out of your Typical Horns set.
All of the same players can be run from either one they just start maybe 1/4 of a second later because the players were all standing 5 to 10 feet away from where they would be standing if you used the other formation. That is 1 of the strengths of those formations.

1 bit of advice though that I took from HUBIE BROWN (the 1st Coach to ever by named Coach of the Year of while at 2 Different NBA Teams. I think the only other Coach to do that is Phil Jackson). And Hubie Brown INVENTED in he 80's what today is NBA Basketball on ALL teams (except for a few new plays).
Hubie Brown is basically like the guy that invented Sabremetrics for Baseball. Except he did it in Basketball. He turned the game into a SCIENCE.

Use the 1-4 Formation if you are WALKING THE BALL UP TH COURT. Why?
Because the 1st Pass in the 1-4 Formation CANNOT be DEFENDED by a Zone Defense or a Zone Half Court Trap. It the Defense wants to Trap you the MUST play Man-to-Man and most of the best plays are drawn up to beat Man-to-Man.

BUT if you ALWAYS RUN and you run a NUMBERS BREAK the Horns Formation (or the UCLA High Post Formation) is more or less EXACTLY where your players will end up running the Numbers Break. That is part of why the NBA loves Horns. That and they have VERY TALENTED BIGS.

Yeah this is great action. Not a true Horns set but close enough.
