I noticed the spacer next to the front race does not sit flush with the housing. Does it get compressed into the housing when the front cover is bolted and tightened? Thanks!
Hey thanks for watching the channel. The cover plate mates up against the steering box race using the paper gasket and metal shims. The race section that protrudes does not move back into the steering box housing to sit flush. The flat cover plate and shims are used to adjust the pressure placed back into the race and the worm gear if that makes sense, while still providing a seal.
You can adjust the pressure over the bearings and rectify if they have play. In the ZF spiders box, there is a bolt that you can adjust and block that make this function.
Thanks man, welcome to our channel🤘

This is a great link that explains the shims and adjustments for the steering box. 😁
What purpose do the shims serve?
