Those are great Dante. Bronze Age horror comics are so good. The amazing Bernie Wrightson, Gene Colan and Joe Kubert contributed to quite a few of those. Titles like The living mummy, Frankenstein’s monster, tales of the unexpected, ghosts and weird war tales were great too. I spent many a night going through the marvel monster magazines too. You should do a video on the creepy and eerie magazines sometime.

Nice vid, Dante. I, too, have a tough time finding the early '70s Marvel anthology-format horror comics. Many of those titles reprinted stories from Atlas horror comics of the 1950s (some of which are pretty lousy) and occasionally ran new stories as well. The old Atlas stories are sometimes illustrated by folks we know from the Marvel Silver Age titles -- Gene Colan, Dick Ayers, Paul Reinman, Don Heck, etc. A few of the covers were rendered by a young Frank Brunner and a few more by Jack Kirby, during his '70s stint with Marvel. As the decade wore on, Marvel dropped many of these titles, and -- apparently as a last-ditch effort to boost sales -- in their final issues they often shifted focus to the late '50s/early '60s "giant monster on the loose" tales that we associate with the titles Where Monsters Dwell, Fear, Where Creatures Roam, etc.
In my opinion, the "cream of the crop" were Tower of Shadows and Chamber of Darkness, which both published a lot of new material and featured many of Marvel's better artists at the time, including Wally Wood, Barry Smith, Jim Steranko and Neal Adams. There's even a Berni Wrightson story in CoD #7, a rarity because Bern was almost exclusively working for DC in the early '70s.

This was Dante's 2nd attempt to make this video. The first take was halted when during Dante's signature "Coming at ya " he swung his elbows back too far and broke one of his new glass cases 😁

The minute I saw this, I had to check it out! I LOVE horror comics, especially the Bronze Age stuff! That's cool that you have a full run of Man-Thing Volume 1! It's kind of like those horror anthologies like Chamber of Chills....They're not really rare, but the people that have them tend to not turn loose of them. So, finding a set is not the easiest thing! When I was a kid, there was a used bookstore in my area and the owner started getting comics just to fill up space. My Mom would have killed me if I came home with something like Haunt of Horror or Vampirella, but I could slide the normal sized comics in. I had never really been exposed to horror titles in the stores...They were a little before my time. But at the used book place, instead of finding Spider-Man books and things like that, I found tons of horror. And I immediately fell in love with Werewolf by Night and Chamber of Chills. They had most of a run of Chills, other than the first three, so I got those and read the heck out of them! And Werewolf by Night....I'm a huge fan! I'll probably pick up that new title, even though it probably has zilch to do with Jack Russell.
Most of those anthology books are really cool, because while they're tough to track down, most of them are reprints of 1950's stuff. And those are REALLY hard to track down! Whenever I'm at a convention, if I find a reasonably priced issues of Suspense or one of those other weird books, I try to pick it up. Journey Into Mystery, Strange Tales, Tales of Suspense, and Tales to Astonish are all pretty famous because they all bled into superhero books. But the original Suspense and a lot of those other Timely/Atlas horror books, they REALLY don't pop up much. They were not as hardcore as EC, but they were pretty grim! And I always liked the look of the art, because it kind of had a....Trashy, sleazy feel to it. It's hard to explain. Kind of like EC. Probably some of the same artists. The normal people look like any characters from the day, but the villains always looked scummy and dirty. Fun stuff! The early runs of most of those Marvel bronze age titles were either the occasional original story or reprints from the days of aliens and big monsters from the Silver Age. But as the years went by and the code relaxed more and more, they started reprinting those late Golden Age horror books that Timely/Atlas were making...Good stuff!
Speaking of that used book store...My first job was helping the fella that owned it move his store....My mother was ready to kill me because I took my payment in a run of Tomb of Dracula books from #45-64. The Son of Dracula storyline. Good stuff! The chew-out was worth it! And she eased up when I told her I would have spent the money comic books somewhere. She knew I wasn't lying! Most of the money I spend on entertainment has gone right into comic books.
That whole Iceman cometh line comes from a play by the same name by Eugene O'Neil! I think the Marvel guys really popularized the line because they would use it so much with Iceman. Someone at the Bullpen must have been a fan of the play, because they referenced it a LOT! Not the play so much as the title. The Iceman Cometh! When things are annoying at work, I tend to go around doing ice puns. Nothing gets a smile on a disgruntled co-workers face quicker than a bunch of goofy Arnold ice puns.
I just recently got a copy of Werewolf By Night #1 myself! I have been waiting since I was a kid to see how Jack got out of that cliffhanger where the woman turned him into a statue at the end of Marvel Spotlight #4! Can't wait to sit down and read it! It's funny....I just recently bought most of the issues I was missing as a kid. And I had sold all my other copies a long time ago. I guess now I have something to track down again! Sometimes the chase if half the fun!

I really enjoyed this comment! Thanks! I think it is epic that you took payment in the form of Tomb of Dracula books! You are a true fan my friend and I always love hearing from you! 🧛‍♂️

Very nice books, Dante. Love Crypt of Shadows, Chamber of Chills, Uncanny Tales and basically any of the '70's Marvel or DC horror reprint titles.
Also, I really, really hate to be "that person" but just so you know, the character's name is not "Tattermedallion", it's "Tatterdemalion", pronounced Tat-ter-de-MAY-leon. The name basically means a person dressed in rags or cast-off clothing. End of character name lesson #101. Keep up the great work. 😎👍

Also, the cover art to that WWbN #9 is (apparently) inspired by Kirby's cover design for Thor #138, with the trolls pulling Dr. Blake "through" the pavement, down into the sewer system below.

Hi Dante awesome video, thanks. I definitely recommend though reading Fatale by Brubaker a supernatural horror inspired by lovecraftian work. Check out also Gideon Falls. I would request if it possible to make a video in the future with best modern horror comic books.
