- 51-year-old, Susan Boyle, represents talent overcoming adversity and poverty. Her modest and poor lifestyle in her home town Blackburn, West Lothian, Scotland brought about a "barren story" for this now famous singer. On April 11, 2009, Boyle appeared as a contestant on the TV program Britain's Got Talent. Dressed in modest homely attire, she was given immediate unfavorable reviews as she stood before the judges. The audience laughed at her as she told the judges she aspired to be "as successful as Elaine Paige". While Singing "I Dreamed a Dream" from Les Miserables, she startled the audience with her voice. After she finished singing, Boyle was regarded as "a big surprise."
This amateur vocalist became an overnight sensation. Websites such as TH-cam, Twitter and Facebook made Boyle rise to fame easier. The following day after the performance, Digg and Reddit featured articles about her performance on their website and the TH-cam video gained immediate popularity amongst readers. The performance video was viewed by nearly 2.5 million people on TH-cam in the first three days. Her video set online records, after being viewed nearly 66 million times in one week. Wikipedia reported nearly half a million page views of her biographical article. 20 different websites reported a total of 103 million video views within nine days. The Los Angeles Times report that her popularity on TH-cam may have been due to the emotion captured from the audience and judges, all packed into a short clip; which ultimately, made it "perfect for the internet"....

I´ve seen her first audition about 100 times, but I still get goosebumps every time she starts to sing. I love the surprised faces of the judges. She is the biggest talent ever on ANY talent show around the world.

That moment when they're looking at her scoffingly, and she starts to sing, still brings tears to my eyes.
Believe me it's all an act with the judges, whether it's BGT or xfactor. They know exactly who the contestants are; they're handpicked (the good and the bad to make the shows more entertaining) during the first 2 auditions that take place before the one we see. Remember, this is show business more than a talent show. And listen to some of the rehearsed lines coming out of the judges. When Charlotte and Jonathon auditioned Simon made a derogatory remark before they started singing and then the duo blew him away, supposedly. Don't take these shows at face value, but still enjoy them.
Well Sharon, i strongly disagree with you. Susan was never heard by the judges before this first addition. She had and audition scheduled for 9:30AM that day but there was a scheduling mistake and she almost didn't get on. They told her to go home and Susan told them she had been 6 hours on a bus getting there, couldn't they squeeze her in somehow? They gave her a number with no promises. Susan didn't know when she would called so she didn't dare go get something to eat. So she set there for HOURS, another contestant offered her a sandwich, thank heavens, so she did get a bite to eat. She didn't get out of there until midnight!!! U know... i wonder if her brothers don't feel stupid, one of them is in the business!!!

There are many aspects of the show that are staged, obviously, but I don't believe the judges' response was one of them. They're simply not that good as actors.

When she auditioned for BGT, I was under the impression she'd never actually sung in public before. Surprised to find out she actually had years of experience. She truly is an inspiration to people everywhere. Her life is proof dreams can come true and it's never to late to pursue them.

She has such a beautiful voice and love when she is cheeky:))) One should never prejudge for if one does they might just be missing out on knowing the most amazing person ever in their lives.......

I am so happy for this woman. Great talent, such a shame it only became known so late in her life. Seems like a nice, kind, low key lady with incredible talent. The kind of really decent people that make you happy when they finally get what they deserve, fame and fortune.
It's always easy to judge someone how they look ,but this lady showed them what a amazing talent she have ,people need to understand that don't judge people there is someone bigger up there can judge you fairly ,our father in heaven

I agree, they shouldn't have been so judgmental. People have a tendency to judge a book by its cover, without opening it and reading what's inside.
Kerensa Birch I'm Scottish, I now live down south, and boy did I cringe when she come on and was shaking her hips at Simon, plus what she was wearing I thought someone is taking the piss here........till she opened her mouth to sing and the voices of angels come out. I still do the same, it's hard to change, but now I give them a wee bit longer before I turn away and don't watch.

Since I've seen her audition she has been my favorite female singer. I have all her CDs and give many as Christmas gifts.
It pisses me off when people judge others just by the way they look and I know it will never come to an end.

She has one of the most beautiful, magnificent voices I've ever heard. When she sings it's as though time is standing still. It's like you're in a trans and your captivated. You don't want it to end. You're holding your breathe and not even realizing it until the end of her song/performance. The first time listening to her you're stunned. Astonishing! I wish her the best & God's speed 💙

To be a superstar after one evening, is not easy, especially if you are 47 years old ! The strain, the effort during the training for the final show is so excessiv, no wonder that susan got ill.
But Susan Boyle is a very special star! Congratulation!

Completely agree. So humble & genuine. We all fell in love with her instantly. She really had no idea how extraordinarily talented she is. She’s stayed humble & grateful. And we still love her. Now she’s worth more than Elaine Page so her dream has been exceeded! Simon Cowell has kept her protected which I really respect. Her lack of confidence can still cripple her & she’s whisked away to fully recover.
