Thank you for the wonderful performance. The Seventh Night of July a.k.a TANABATA🎋⭐ is one of the most beloved pieces among Japanese high school brass band members as it symbolizes the "summer of high school students.” Tanabata is a variant name for July 7. And it is a seasonal event originally derived from a Chinese legend. Vega represents Orihime which was a princess, linked to And Altair represents Hikoboshi which was a prince. they were usually separated by the Milky Way, are said to meet only once a year on July 7. In this piece, Alto Sax represents Orihime and Euphonium represents Hikoboshi in the middle solo. In Japan, July 7 has been a popular event to write wishes on strips of paper and hang them on bamboo branches to wish for good luck in arts and studies, in reference to Orihime's skill at weaving. Sakai Itaru composed this piece in 1988 at the age of 17. The song depicts the complex emotions of the Tanabata festival, anticipation of the upcoming summer vacation, anxiety about the future such as university entrance exams, and loneliness at the end of one's long teenage years, interspersed with bright and familiar melodies. He says of the romantic atmosphere of the song, "I imagined a good couple from the same school" . During the summer vacation from the end of July to early September, qualifying rounds for the All Japan Brass Band Competition are held in various locations, and brass band members practice hard for the finals. However, only on July 7, many high school students interrupt their practice of their assigned pieces to play this beloved piece in ensemble. July in Japan is the hottest and most humid month, but please listen to this song while imagining high school students looking up at the stars in the clear night sky after the rainy season.
You may or may not see this comment (I'm a year late, it appears), but thank you for the information! I'm always on the lookout for new music to introduce to my students, and it's great to learn the stories behind it.

I got to know it last July! It's beautiful. The pandemic has been rough, and it's great to have music like this to enjoy and deal with the stuff that's been going on. I don't know you, of course, but I hope you're doing okay.
Alisa Jones For me I guess it’s the day that the cowherd meets the weaver girl. So if I’m not wrong, the story is that both of them are so called work for god and their love was not allowed. Thus they got separated by a river and that river is the milky way (yea very far). Every year, both of them can only meet on 7th of July when there is a bridge for them to unite.
+leroyosmon www.edrmartin.com/en/bio-itaru-sakai-2815/ I heard that he composed this song when he was a high schooler!!!Amazing! He is also a flutist. Whenever I play this song, flute part is very beautiful but extremely tricky! Cause he knew various kinds of skills in flute playing!
Thank you for the wonderful performance.

This piece is really just incredible. Truly amazing.
One of the best concert band pieces... EVER
every year's 7th of July always reminded me of this piece.
makes me remember i used to play in a wind orchestra club c': full of memories.
It’s 7th of July in 2020 now! I only get to know this piece this year and it’s such a nice piece

Happy July 7th!
Happy july seventh!
4:29 trumpets... GOOSEBUMPS
the pace of the piece is phenomenal at the beginning
Great piece with wonderful and diversified intonation! Together with the intense expression:) best band ever!
great control and diversity of tone colour there! these guys are really good at making music out of seemingly simple notes :D
The 7th Night of July😌 (waited almost a year for this)
what a wonderful piece...i started crying around 2:22 , when begins the second theme.
The 7th of July is also coincidentally my dads birthday so I have two reasons to celebrate
you know what, 7th night of July is the chinese valentine day when princess vega and prince altair can meet each other. what a romantic day, hah.
That story behind that music
I miss this so much. 😭
Don’t forget to comeback and listen to this
All time favorite band!
best piece of all times.
2:20 is definitely my favorite part of this entire piece.
I am in total agreement. The carry over of that theme at about the 4 min mark is spectacular.
Thrillrider10 I got this sax solo !
This gives me crazy Super Mario Galaxy vibes!
wellthatsunfortunate always thought the same thing when I heard this, glad I'm not the only one
@@hushroll me too for some reason
A lot of Japanese composers have that vibe and I love it!!
Happy 7th July 2024 ❤
@6:30 not sure if the brief counter melody is a quote from Alvamar Overture?
Yes that's the general consensus.
Heard that too
I'm super excited, i'm gonna play this piece soon ^^
this wind orchestra is the best i´ve heard.
How could it get better?
Happy 7th July 2023 ❤

Is this really Tokyo Kosei?
Haha Rachel stop stalking haha

I think its just the recording
DIO BRANDO
