Finland is heavy metal country. almost everything in music happens outside of ESC, there still is some good pop and stuff. if you want to react other Finnish music my suggestion would be Nightiwsh, you might like it.

As a Swede, I should probably be looking all smug right now, but after such stellar and unique acts as Lordi and Teräsbetoni, it's more like I'm hanging my head in shame. Finland has never been afraid of going their own way, even if it rarely works out for them, and I can't praise them enough for that boldness.

Finland is the little brother of sweden... Like you have ABBA we have Darude...

Especially in the recent years Sweden has been pretty predictable and kinda boring with their ESC acts. Also, sometimes the juries seem to overrate Sweden, like in 2018 when they got even less televotes than Finland but the massive amount of jury votes helped them go all the way up to top 7.

@@6891x Bull! Benjamin was underrated by the tasteless televoters! The jurors were right to put him at 2nd place.

Many of the older songs, for example “Katson sineen taivaan” and “Sata salamaa” are still big classics in Finland, but many people here don’t know they are from Eurovision. I still have to say my absolute favorite one of our county’s entries is Hard rock hallelujah, I still remember the day we won with it!

Yep I had no idea until I watched these Eurovision reactions that those songs were from Eurovision. Absolutely classic bangers

Finland has always been the country who does something different. And in 2006 we went completely different and I think that's why Lordi won.

Not to generalize, but a lot of us finns DO like sad, dark, melancholical music.
But we also like happy upbeat stuff too... depends on the mood.
Considering that THIS is a popular new-ish finnish Christmas song:
th-cam.com/video/m7s6kIYzlNI/w-d-xo.html Suvi Teräsniska - Hei Mummo
It's about a lonely grandma living alone in the north. And how the relatives are coming for christmas.

The 80's wasn't too bad, but you guys should listen these two songs the Finns would have wanted to present them at the Eurovision, but the jury made their own decision.
This one should have qualified for the Eurovision in 1981, but the jury disagreed.
    Frederik - Titanic
    m.th-cam.com/video/JSrR4tUFj_0/w-d-xo.html
...and this one is actually a very good song, and not just for the Eurovision. It also got the second place in qualification.
Riki Sorsa - Haaveissa vainko oot mun (Are you mine only in the dreams)

I'm sorry to say that the Finnish qualifying compos suffer from being changed too often, and over the years some mistakes have been made in the hunt for the perfect concept. The compo does not have the same status among established Finnish artists and songwriters as it has in neighboring Sweden. At one point they didn't seem to let new songwriters in (which made the whole scene outdated for a while), while other years they only wanted unestablished writers (which resulted in some interesting and good stuff - Softengine - but also songs that didn't really serve the purpose of the compo.)
It's also a problem that some of the songs that people really thought would make it, like Blackbird or Monsters, that got a lot of fans and hype beforehand, turned out to flop for no apparent reason. It just makes it feel hopeless and disappointing for many.

Due to low results, Finland was excluded from the contest in 1995, 1997, 1999, 2001, and 2003. There was a rule that the bottom 5 from the last year couldn't participate the next year from 1994 to 1996. In 1997 they changed it so only the countries with the best average scores over the previous four years could participate. Of course both of these ridiculous rules are now long gone.

Like yes everyone is going to understand your beutiful poetry song... Because everyone speaks Finnish! 🙄

Between 1973 and 1976 there was already a period with a free language rule. This rule was abandoned again in 1977 but Belgium and Germany were allowed to sing in English because they had already chosen their entries at the time the own language rule was reinstated.

  • @noorajjang

as it stands currently, how yle runs the regionals and with how esc artists are viewed... nobody wants to go. going to esc sort of kills any domestic career u might have. this isnt/wasnt the case for artists before lordi but after?? theres just something about it that nobody wants to go anymore and UMK is just a stepping stone for artists nobody has ever heard of. and then they fade back into the shadows from where they came. darude did it bcs he is irrelevant now and the only song anyone knows is standstorm.
tl;dr, going on esc is career suicide for finnish artists so we never get anyone good, at least post lordi.

The band you looked real close, 2015, was Pertti Kurikan nimipäivät ( = the name day parties of Pertti Kurikka - [the leader of the band] )
"Pertti Kurikka's Naming Days started in 2009 in Konala, Helsinki, at the art workshop of the Lyhty Association, which provides services to people with intellectual disabilities, when film director Pekka Karjalainen wanted a band of people with intellectual disabilities to perform in his film A Little Respect. The association had several bands, but for the film they decided to form a completely new one, based around guitarist Pertti Kurikka, who had a strong punk background. Kurikka wrote the song "Kallioon" for the film, which premiered in the summer of 2010, with lyrics by the band's singer Kari Aalto.[2]
Pertti Kurikka's Nimipäivät came to national attention in the spring of 2009, when Kalle Pajamaa, who worked as a director at the workshop, made a music video for the song, which he uploaded to TH-cam. Within a few weeks it had over ten thousand views, and soon the band was offered a gig at the Fucking Disco punk club in Helsinki. In February 2010, Pertti Kurikka's Nimipäivät played at Tavastia club [The Iconic Club of Helsinki, The Place to perform in] and that winter the band made their first concert trip outside the capital region when they played at Vastavirta club in Tampere's Ylä-Pispala.[2]
After that, the band played hundreds of concerts and also performed abroad, including in the United States, Germany, Canada, Kosovo, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Norway.[2] In May 2014, the band performed a charity concert in Rovaniemi with Mr. Lordi.[3] In December 2014, Pertti Kurikka's Named Days performed a ten-concert tour in the UK with the English punk band Hard Skin.[4] In December 2014, Pertti Kurikka's Named Days performed a ten-concert tour in the UK with the English punk band Hard Skin.
Pertti Kurikan Nimipäivät participated in the 2015 New Music Competition with their song "Aina mun pitää".[5] The band made it from the first qualifying round directly to the final of the competition, which they eventually won.[6] However, the band did not make it to the final of the Eurovision Song Contest and were eliminated in the first semi-final.
During the Eurovision Song Contest, the band was interviewed on television in Russia, Germany and other countries.[8] The British newspaper The Independent wrote that the band wanted to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest to raise awareness of intellectual disability. According to the paper, the band members also believe that the Eurovision Song Contest will bring support to programmes that help people with disabilities. The magazine also told its readers that the band's guitarist Pertti Kurikka was a big fan of the Eurovision Song Contest and that the punk community as a whole supported the band.[9] In February, an article linked to the Dead Kennedys' Facebook page sparked a lively debate about the band. For example, it was noted that the band brings positive attention to living with a developmental disability and breaks down prejudices about mental illness.[10]
Members of the band also appeared in a serie "Good day, Mr Holbein" by Pekka Elomaa and Lyhty.
Pertti Kurikka announced that he would stop playing rock when he turned 60, and the band ended on Kurikka's birthday on 26 December 2016.[12] Tickets for a show at On the Rocks club in Helsinki cost 60 cents.[13] Otto Talvio of Helsingin Sanomat newspaper described the band's last show as sweaty, cramped and emotional."

First off, why do people from Finland all have rectangle-shaped heads?
Also, they must have the mullet as their official hairstyle because even the women had them as well.
They'd be rubbish if it weren't for Lordi and Fredi. Bump Bump indeed. ESC's youtube has the 1976 contest on right now and they're a highlight (along with Mata Hari).
