    Robin, It's ok to say "Zed" - the Camaro was built in Canada (making it a Canadian muscle car) for over 30 years, along with its cousin the Trans Am. Mine was built in St Therese, Quebec. So Zed is appropriate. GM eventually closed the St Therese plant and moved production to Michigan, so the newest ones can be "Zees". :)

    Cool find. In the early 90's I had a Dodge Neon demo floppy when that car was first introduced. It looked fairly good in VGA and even had a few limited animations on it.
    While the Chevette was bit of a joke in the 80's IMO the REAL joke was the mid to late 80's Chevy Nova! That car was a simply a rebadged Toyota Corolla with the quality removed from it. My family owned a 86 hatchback Nova for a short time after buying it from a relative for $600 in 93. It little 4cyl engine in it put out 80hp on a good day, it blew a head gasket at less than 60k miles (it had just been replaced when we bought it) and blew a 2nd head gasket shortly after turning over 100k miles about 2 years later. The car was barely 10 years old when it was scrapped! In addition to the major engine issues it was rusting like CRAZY and falling apart all over. I've owned a couple of 2000 and later Chevy's and they've been so much better than POS Nova was!

    You'd be surprised at how low the gear ratio is on the top gear of a 3-speed -- you really only ever shift into 3rd around 70-85 km/h, and the RPMs drop way down. So when you're doing 105 or so, the RPMs are fairly normal. The really nice thing about a 3-speed is that you rarely have to shift when driving in the city. First gear gets you from a stop to like 30 km/h easily, 2nd takes you from there up to around 70km/h. So if you have to shift at all, it's just one shift. I miss 3-speed transmissions! My uncle had a manual 3-speed on some muscle car, I can't remember what it was -- a Trans Am, or a Mustang, or a Vette or something. In 3rd gear, that thing would just FLY. According to my dad, he got rid of it because he got too many speeding tickets. The car just wanted to go! And as he was driving back and forth between Toronto and Ottawa, the 401 just invites you to put the pedal down.

    The Sprint IMO was one of the worst cars you could have in that time period. The only thing you could say for it is the gas mileage was stellar. The Chevette was a step up by comparison. I went on a road trip as a passenger in a Sprint in a near-blizzard. My friend, who was driving, was a bit of a timid driver anyway, and the semis roaring by and tailgating was kind of terrifying. His was equipped with A/C, which while effective, had to be turned off when merging onto a freeway to eke out every horsepower it could give. With less than 100K miles on it, it began using a quart of oil every 50 miles or so, and eventually became a rolling storage unit in the parking lot of the building he lived in, and ultimately was towed to its death.

Delete's function is defined in applications, and is not implemented in the firmware, so the key outputs it's ASCII character. Oddly enough, the behaviour of "delete" (and to a lesser extent, "backspace") is still strange and mostly inconsistently defined on a Mac... Not quite sure what's going on there. Mr. Harbron, will you please make a follow-up video that shows us and explains how they could multiformat one side of a floppy disk for 3 different formats of drives (and why you had to use side 2 for the Apple even though the instruction said side 1)?

    • @8_Bit
      @8_Bit  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sorry it wasn't clear enough, but the disk I show from the Chevy Tech envelope only had the IBM PC-compatible version on it. The C64 and Apple II versions were found online; links to their sources are provided in the video description.

    • @HelloKittyFanMan.

      @@8_Bit: OHHHH! I heard you talk about those sources but I didn't remember your having said that that's how _you_ got them too. Haha, I was like, "Wow, I know that you can partition a hard drive nowadays to have differently formatted sections, but floppy drives are so specific, especially ones from back in those old days, that it would take some great wizardry to set up a special one at a factory that could write those different formats to different tracks of the same disk side!"

      @@HelloKittyFanMan. That reminds me that I do have one triple-format 5.25" floppy disk. Mastertronic's Ninja has IBM PC version on one side, with C64 and Atari sharing the other side which is pretty clever. I would like to do a video about that disk sometime.
