You're correct, it's not s GMC problem....It's a driver training issue. What if someone hooks up a trailer?...how will they ever back up? C'mon guys, you must have known the vast majority of comments are going to be the same..
True. But realistically, I'd be more worried and therefore more cautious if I were driving a $70K truck than something like a used Wrangler or Crown Vic. And in all fairness, I use the backup camera on my family's car all the time. I'd like to say I wish I didn't, but it is really useful, if a little fisheye.
Tim Kelly their trucks were made of heavier stronger steel and were not as afraid to scratch a $14000 truck. Now that truck are tin, aluminum and $50000 plus. I would take nothing less than eagle eyed satellite camera to back up the investment i spent on a truck.
OK, but seriously. Since mobile phones none of us remember phone numbers like we used to as they're stored in the phone. Since Sat Nav you don't learn a route to a new place nearly as easily as you just sit there and follow instructions without paying attention to where you;re going. Auto parking cars will de-skill drivers so they're no longer able to parallel park. Reversing camera reliance diminishes your skill at judging the back of your vehicle when reversing. I know that if it's available, then why not use it, but the de-skilling is a shame as when the tech fails the driver won't have the skills to replace it. I drive a van with no windows, so everything is using the mirrors. My current van has reversing sensors and I've come to rely on them and find it difficult to know where the back of the van is without a bleep, the previous van didn't have sensors and I was pretty good at judging that. PS. I feel old reading that. LOL
My backup camera is used ONLY to make sure nothing (or nobody) is directly behind my bumper before I move, and again on final approach into a parking spot. And even then, just because it's there. If it's not available due to ice or dirt, or a down tailgate, you don't panic, you just... drive. In almost 20 years of driving I've never backed into anything because I'm aware of my surroundings and don't whip out of a parking spot at 15 mph. There's no substitute for turning your head and looking at your surroundings. I'll end my semi-old man rant now, I do enjoy the extra vision they give you. :P
back up cameras are a luxury.... get out and look if your not sure...turn around and look... is the only 100 % way your not going to hit anything...jmo
mikeatc33 fair enough. But if I have to spend and extra 5min loading up my supply trailer because I have to walk around to check if I am inline with my trailer. I consider that wasting my companies business and money.
Sounds like a millennial issue of being too lazy to turn their head and using mirrors. Man drove for almost 100 years without a back up camera just fine.
Simple solution with today's technology... a small tethered drone mounted in the tailgate, which launches automatically when the truck is put into Reverse. The drone can fly at a customizable altitude and distance to give the driver any view they want! The tether solves the battery/power issue. :D Yes, I'm kidding. Kind of.
they should do what Volkswagen does with the backup camera. have a little flap (the flap is located at their VW emblem which also doubles as the hatch lever. put it on a manual tilting axis!
nah, don't mess with the speedo cable gear. Just put shorter gears in the front and rear pumpkins to offset the bigger tires. then your gearing will be better for off-roading too.
Good video guys. I own a 2022 high country and my beef with GM is that when I take the tailgate off to mount my camper I have no cameras. I get an error on my display. GM you can’t be serious that this problem can’t be fixed. It would be great to see you guys put a video out on this topic.
My 2012 Ram had it in the tailgate handle area as well my cousins 2016 F150 (I think) and my new 2018 Tundra has it in the Tail gate handle area as well. That being said I tend to have good judgement and take it easy when backing up if I have the tail gate down but I can see it being an issue for those that are used to having the camera to assist them in backing.
Umm, get a wireless one and put it where ya need it. I have been without a backup camera my whole life and been fine! I feel bad for you young kids, got it to easy. Good luck with that!
Simple fix. I just took a couple hand held mirrors that my wife uses to Bruce her hair/makeup and stuck them on the side of my doors and point them backwards..... lol. This is why I hate how dependant people have become on technology that you really shouldn't need. I mean a backup camera is nice. But not a necessity. Hell I drive transports and they don't have a back up camera or rear view mirror. And I don't use it in my car or pickup either....
Back up a little, then get out and walk to the back of the truck and see how much space you have, then get back in and repeat until you can't go any further. So easy.
And how would the camera help you backing into traffic, or with kids playing, from the side? The FOV is not wide enough to see 90 degrees from a fixed camera. You would hopefully be looking left and right and not at your camera to see if cross traffic is clear.
The solution has been invented, patented, and will be available for purchase very soon! As well as appearing as a factory option on new vehicles in the near future
Sorry but i don't see this as an issue. the backup camera is used primarily to hook up a trailer which you can't do with the tailgate down. use the camera when the tailgate is up and when it is down go old school and turn your head and look out the back. you can see being that the tailgate is, well, down. if you are paying attention you will not hit anything being that you are looking directly out the back.
Most people today don't have neck control. They are so use to looking down they can't look side to side or over the shoulder. The manufacturer has to do it for them. People don't even know what make a right in 500 feet means?......
Or...you could use your side view mirrors like you should. And if you feel you're getting close, get out and check how close you are getting to an object. This isn't an truck issue. This is just pure laziness, and complete dependability on technology. Sure I have a backup camera, and I'll admit it comes in handy when hooking up a trailer. But 99% of the time, I don't use it. People become so hooked on looking at these backup cameras that they don't pay attention to their surroundings when reversing.
Put a secondary camera on the tailgate with a removable cover lol , so when the tailgate is flipped down its looking straight back its 2021 there can be a switch that tells the camera to switch to secondary camera when tailgate gate in down position, shouldn't be that difficult!!
Just add a camera to the top edge of tailgate. When you put tailgate down the standard camera turns off and the top edge camera turns on.... not a lot of rocket science needed.
You shouldn't be driving a truck if you always relied on backup cameras. I haul a 40 fifth that has a provisions for a camera, but I'm not about to drop my honest hard earned money on a camera, doubting my reversing skills.
Ok it’s on the tailgate so all trucks have it there so if it’s folded down just use your mirrors this is why I hate technology just go back to using your side view mirrors ughhhhh!!!!!! This video is for people can’t backup a vehicle using mirrors

C'mon guys, you must have known the vast majority of comments are going to be the same..
What ever happened to driving with the braille method? Back up until you hear glass.
How did people ever manage to go backwards before cameras? Good grief! LOL
That was when cars were cheap. Now, people are afraid to scratch their $70K lux truck.
Everyone is always an expert, until they hit something backing up and then the excuses begin😉

I drive a semi with a 53-foot trailer that has no backup camera, why is it so difficult to backup a pickup truck?
It's not difficult for a professional like you, but it's a convenience feature and a government mandate for pickup trucks and passenger vehicles.
When you're not in a parking lot with shopping carts and people walking back and forth it's a lot easier... it's not comparable at all.
Lol I thought they were going to identify the problem then fix it...
Between the two of them they couldn't change an air filter.
The 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali now has two camera for that very issue. Not to mention even more cameras all over the place on it.
Or you can just use your mirrors and common sense to figure out where you need to stop when your backing up lol
My backup camera is used ONLY to make sure nothing (or nobody) is directly behind my bumper before I move, and again on final approach into a parking spot. And even then, just because it's there. Eric Fox ... i do too...but its my own personel time... but thank for the reply..
mikeatc33 Ya it is not such a problem for personal use. Unless the boy's are waiting on you to get your stuff and the beers are getting warm.
Eric Fox ... lol... ok

Yes, I'm kidding. Kind of.
Every truck does this. Instead of crappy band aids how about you just learn to back up without using the camera as a crutch?
It’s called side mirrors and skill. Yes back up cameras are nice but if you rely on one and can’t back up without it turn in your license.
they should do what Volkswagen does with the backup camera. have a little flap (the flap is located at their VW emblem which also doubles as the hatch lever. put it on a manual tilting axis!
Can We Fix It: Big Green's Speedometer Error
Yes we can but not today
The interesting part about Big Green's speedometer correction is that it will require a mechanical speedometer cable gearing to correct for tire size.
Really?? There isn't an easier electromechanical solution?
nah, don't mess with the speedo cable gear. Just put shorter gears in the front and rear pumpkins to offset the bigger tires. then your gearing will be better for off-roading too.
yes turning your head is a solution unless you have arthritis and it is not that easy. so camera's and mirrors help.
Good video guys. I own a 2022 high country and my beef with GM is that when I take the tailgate off to mount my camper I have no cameras. I get an error on my display. GM you can’t be serious that this problem can’t be fixed. It would be great to see you guys put a video out on this topic.

I thought the new Silverado (GM ? platform) put sensors in the bumper steps? They were proud of something back there, but I can't remember.
Remember when men didn’t need a back up camera. 🙄
Simple just put camera's in each tail light (Stereo Vision)
But seriously if it's that important. Mount it into the corner as a part of the taillight or just above it...
Through all the videos he's been in, I'm convinced Michael has tornado-proof hair.
Back up a little, then get out and walk to the back of the truck and see how much space you have, then get back in and repeat until you can't go any further. So easy.
Unless of course you are backing into a busy street with moving cars or little kids playing on the sidewalk.
And how would the camera help you backing into traffic, or with kids playing, from the side? The FOV is not wide enough to see 90 degrees from a fixed camera. You would hopefully be looking left and right and not at your camera to see if cross traffic is clear.
Post the FCA news please !
They put it like that on purpose so when you put your tailgate down you get a perfect birds eye view of your hitch
I have a neck that works, problem solved.
Someone, not me, ran over a Squirrel in my neighborhood, 'Can You Fix It"?
Thanks I never knew this.
Simple fix add a one way mirror at an angle when the tailgate comes now. So the camera is looking at the mirror's reflection.
A cheap effective fix. Might even try that. For all the naysayers why even have a vehicle you could walk people did it for thousands of years.
The solution has been invented, patented, and will be available for purchase very soon! As well as appearing as a factory option on new vehicles in the near future
Whoa! I have a backup camera and I never use it.

how about a camera in each tail light and stitching the video together
Another problem is if you have anything plugged into the cig power, the screen strokes out and turns into a 1950's TV.
Pointless video. Thought you were gonna engineer a fix instead calling on others to create a fix. Have you become politicians?
If you can’t back up, then don’t haul anything.
Two separate cameras one in each tail light (top part of the tail light) that blend together To make 180° Camera view
Why don't use mount a removable mirror to the tailgate.
Yup true that nice camera by tow hitch that 360 all around
Or...you could use your side view mirrors like you should. And if you feel you're getting close, get out and check how close you are getting to an object.

Because they also sell “IntelliHaul”
Driver side brake light or top of liftgate
Put a secondary camera on the tailgate with a removable cover lol , so when the tailgate is flipped down its looking straight back its 2021 there can be a switch that tells the camera to switch to secondary camera when tailgate gate in down position, shouldn't be that difficult!!
Subaru Baja had a license plate swivel.
What a bunch of dorks. WHAT WILL I EVER DO!?! I CANT SEE. Lol
Just add a camera to the top edge of tailgate. When you put tailgate down the standard camera turns off and the top edge camera turns on.... not a lot of rocket science needed.
Try blindsiding with a 53 foot semi trailer
Um, know your surroundings and use your mirrors! My pickup has a backup camera and I don't think I've ever looked at it.
Truck manufacturing please.. just make trucks the way they were in the 70s ,80s and 90s.. who needs all this crap and this power this and power that
Mount another camera on the top of the tailgate. When the tailgate is down it will be facing straight back.
Michael Justa they do make wireless cameras but a mounted one. I see bad thing happening with that.
Eric Fox not wireless. From the factory just like the stock camera recessed in the top of the tailgate.
You shouldn't be driving a truck if you always relied on backup cameras. I haul a 40 fifth that has a provisions for a camera, but I'm not about to drop my honest hard earned money on a camera, doubting my reversing skills.
Really you could just put a mirror on the licence plate.
Put it in taillight
I thought they were going to fix a backup camera?*@!
Yes, that IS an annoying problem, isn't it? Why not just install a camera somewhere in the tail light assembly?-
Put the camera or cameras, in the taillight. Problem fixed
Use your mirrors and turn your head
Lol obviously it doesn't gave mirrors on both sides of the truck
yes yes yes !!!
Isnt that problem with any gm truck with a backup camera. The 14 silverado had it to
it's a problem with every pickup truck in existence with a backup camera
Or you could be a man and back up and just....ya know....turn your head?
Back in my day, when my F-150 was new (2015), we used the mirrors...
Buy a trailer
first of all those truck will never haul something that big.
Get a real truck, problem solved.
Ok it’s on the tailgate so all trucks have it there so if it’s folded down just use your mirrors this is why I hate technology just go back to using your side view mirrors ughhhhh!!!!!! This video is for people can’t backup a vehicle using mirrors
