One thing I found interesting was the contrast between Vai's sound and Polyphia's, although they fit very well together. Polyphia signature sound is very chopped up, and Vai deliberately wrote a solo based on sustained notes and long slides. Together they sound like the union between the continuous and the discrete.
Tim said that the sunset shot was kinda unintentional, it just got really late while they were shooting the video and only had a few minutes of daylight left before they could finish that last shot.
I really like how polyphia built this video, it builds on itself not only musically but spatially as well as the song is getting more and more complex and more ppl are playing at the same time the space they occupy is bigger and bigger until they are outside on the rooftop and then the three guitars sing together blending the three distinct sounds... it's just beautiful artistically and musically
This song is so cool! as soon as I saw the video for it was out, I was hoping you guys would do a reaction to it. Steve is an absolute class act. It's amazing how he can take modern stuff, add his own flair and make it work so well. It's no wonder he has remained relevant and will probably continue to. Vinnie's reaction when Steve shows up is gold!! 🤘
I love that it looks like they're just posing at the end of the video, but they're really just looking at the trumpeter. And I love how they literally and figuratively level up during each of the 3 segments.
Speechless!!! Another one of those epic moment for guitar !! So cool to see the clash of titans of 2 different generation !!! Meeting him must have been so awesome !!! Happy for both of you !!! Great reaction as always !!! 🤘🤘
So few people notice that that 'throne' is the same one Tim is sitting in to start the video, then Scott is sitting in it when his solo section begins, and then on the rooftop, Vai is sitting in it. Of course, the trumpet player, who represents the African-American roots of western popular music just sits on the highest part of the building structure, not needing anything else because, as the band+Vai acknowledges their homage (which is what the song is about) to their predecessors.
within the context of "Ego Death," Vai's solo represents saying more with less rather than play as many notes as possible. also his whammy control through the entire thing is literally like speaking an entire additional language of guitar technique. i want to see them with Adrian Belew now. i'm also very interested to see what their song with Chino from Deftones is. you should check out the Japanese band Sokoninaru. unbelievable musicians, i think you'd love them.
Hey guys. I believe this is a game changer. As a guitarist myself i've been listening to Steve for so long and i was always afraid of that day our heroes will be gone, but after this...man...i had tears of joy in my eyes. Thank you Jesus Christ!
The video is very representative of where they started to where they are at with the acceptance from Steve Vai. At the very beginning Tim Henson is sitting on the throne in the basement, next we go up a few levels where we have windows and light and Scott lepage is then sitting on the throne, then part 3 is on the roof with Steve Vai sitting on the throne. Also at the very beginning of the video when we see Tim playing on his own, the sound is processed as an unplugged song, then when Scott is brought it it’s plugged in right before the title card. They are all incredible musicians and it is awesome to see Steve Vai in there just happily jamming with the new generation of guitar virtuosos with the end just highlighting that they are now all here at the top. Can’t wait to see more from Polyphia and hopefully we can have more awesome collaborations from Steve Vai too!
The fist time I watched it, the moment Vai "enters" the scene playing his first notes I was concerned, how this is supposed to work that's impossible? Then everything blends in perfectly, it's amazing!
I read somewhere that in the first part Vai played (on the throne) he actually bends one (or more) string while also using the whammy to shape the sound, essentially bending a note (with his fingers) within a completely bend-up chord (with the trem). Check his fingering really close and you can sort of see it.
Amazing song. Vai fits easily everywhere and it's always himself at the same time. I mean, if we were listening this song in a radio before seeing the video, we would know it was him entering in the middle of the song. Steve Vai is like water lol
Yeah man, these guys are great metal guirarists and very open minded. I have been trying to cover a song of polyphia called goat but in fact i find its really harsh to use the guitar techinics as they use, since ever i have been playing i have studed different guitar technics ... anyways, they are great. Cool reaction guys. Just subed to your channel. Have a nice one !!!
When I first heard Steve Vai's solo on this I was disappointed. It felt lackluster. After 4 more listens I still wasn't really sold. It's so weird because after 10+ listens, it really is complimentary to the track how much he held back. We all know the dude can shred. It's like he purposely took it easy on this track to tip the cap to the new school but deep down we all know he's really on another level with it. The track needed another speed and he provided that. Amazing.
Steve Vai was shockingly restrained in this solo. I get the sense he wanted to let Polyphia shine and not take the spotlight. The legato sound of Vai combined with the staccato sound of Polyphia worked nicely.
Steve was...the Icing to the Cake they Made... Great piece of not just Musicality, but the recording was Next Level... I find the Flamenco Flair intoxicating... And I'm Luv'n the Drum'N reminds me of Copeland tight...sharp...quick...
You guys are awesome and I love you guys, you guys knows your shit, you guys are polite, you guys are real when coming to talking about to reacting to a music video is like enjoying and sharing a piece of good music together as when as sharing details that not everyone has notice… unlike many other reactors who are fake as fuck, know nuts, and stop video all the time just so they could fakery show a face of being impress or jumping off a chair …. Through your videos I have enjoyed and also learn things that I didn’t would have knew of… anyway keep up the amazing work guys! You guys rocks! And too I have a request I hope one day I can hear you guys react to some amazing shit from this guitarist th-cam.com/video/nb_Uj47N7jc/w-d-xo.html max ostro! Hope you guys love his playing too!
Hey Sylvester, thanks a lot for your very kind words, we really appreciate it. We're glad you enjoy our reaction videos, we try to do exactly that as you said - have a genuine discussion about what it is that we are reacting to and hope that it stimulates other people to join the discussion as well, and hopefully people enjoy watching our video as well! Glad to hear that you've been able to learn something from our videos as well, that's genuinely amazing to hear! Yes Max Ostro is a monster of a guitar player, and so young too! Thanks again for supporting the channel, all the best! 😁🤘🏻
i luv how you two mention the style of clothes and how good they look, meanwhile you two also look like rock stars jajajjaja just the say of a fat dude from the basement. great vid, im subscribing =)
Suggestion: wire/direct your speaker output as an input/mic as well, rather than simply recording your speakers with your mic (which is what I am guessing I hear?). Sound clarity will be much better for your audience.
Nice review and first visit to your channel. You seem pretty open to guitarists from around the world. Suggest you react/listen to Haruka Noma (Hal-Ca) from the band Asterism. A Japanese instrumental metal/progressive/jazz metal band. The band consists of three outstanding musicians but Haruka, the lead guitarist, is the standout. She is often compared to Steve Vai, Buckethead and even SRV. They are a young band and Haruka herself is young, still being only 19. But they have 3 albums out ranging from pretty traditional metal, through progressive jazz metal to anime metal. Might be best to start with Dawn (live) th-cam.com/video/buQPvINJcA0/w-d-xo.html or Blaze (live) th-cam.com/video/51Pxkp8lGAs/w-d-xo.html both off their first album Ignition. Haruka is 16 in these.
I love your reactions. I think it is time to introduce you to one of the greatest guitar duos to come along in quite some time. There is a heavy metal band from Japan who formed in 2016 that has started to take the world by storm. They already won the 2018 Metal Hammer Golden Gods award for best new band. The kicker, they are an all female band, and despite being from Japan, they sing all their songs in English. But the best part is they have two phenomenal guitarists, Midori and Miyako, who are on par with Herman Li and Sam Totman from DragonForce. They have in fact toured with DF in 2019 in the UK. I recommend you check out their song "Set the World on Fire" the live performance. Here is the link: th-cam.com/video/99zsH6iG_6c/w-d-xo.html
This Polyphia nonsense is where I get off the metal train. This sounds like old audio errors you would get in protools when trying to sync audio and the sample rates didn't match.
Just another living proof of how metal musicians are nice, genuine, and open-minded. Great reaction guys & instant sub!!
thank you for the kind words mate!
I guess playing agressively means you can save the agression for the guitars and be a chiller person
@@Arcanineisthebest great point! :)
Je les connaissais pas je les adore ces deux là, super bonnes vibes 👌
@@Arcanineisthebest indeed, let aggression be a force for good, a.k.a. music!
"That's a lovely jumper!" The most British comment I heard in years, and that's alone is worth a sub! XD
hahahaha, thank you Christer
One thing I found interesting was the contrast between Vai's sound and Polyphia's, although they fit very well together. that's a very very good point!
Very well said. You explained exactly what I was thinking.
Bro it sound like gta 5 , cars game , like in the city
Polyphia did actually chop up the solo Steve gave them.
Exactly contrast is important. Even earlier than that they used distortion for contrast. It is refreshing to have popular music with dynamics.
Tim said that the sunset shot was kinda unintentional, it just got really late while they were shooting the video and only had a few minutes of daylight left before they could finish that last shot.
Really? That's a very interesting bit of information! Thanks :)
That’s called Golden Hour, you always plan outdoor shoots around it.
I really like how polyphia built this video, it builds on itself not only musically but spatially as well as the song is getting more and more complex and more ppl are playing at the same time the space they occupy is bigger and bigger until they are outside on the rooftop and then the three guitars sing together blending the three distinct sounds... it's just beautiful artistically and musically

hahaha, thanks Valeria, it sounds like we felt exactly the same!
And people think metal heads are horrible people 😂 you two seem so sweet! Also love the jumpers too lmao. You’ve gained a sub! 🔥🖤
I was impressed that Steve didn't come in and out Polyphia Polyphia, since he probably could. This wasn't a guitar-battle, had no egos... "Ego Death"
Lovely guys and reaction
i love your reactions guys...especially the Steve Vai music yall just get it and you dig the groove.....and man what good hair brothers
I love that it looks like they're just posing at the end of the video, but they're really just looking at the trumpeter.

Glad you enjoyed it Zack! Very good point, guitarists from 2 very different eras of music collaborating is so great and interesting to listen to!
Great reaction and analysis video.this is possibly the most amazing musicianship I have ever seen. Amazing !!
Love the old mixed with the new. Vai appreciates the new generation of guitarists.
Love your reactions 🔥

thanks a lot mate! gracias!
great reactions as always, keep continue update
It's crazy given all Steve has done, but those two pick scratches are I think my favorite couple of seconds of his playing!
right????

Detailed description, of the details.👏👏
I just caught myself on "shushing" you when Steve popped up with his solo :D
I am pretty confident that Tim is playing an Ibanez "J" Custom here. I have the same guitar in left handed.
Nice! How's the guitar?
Yea I was gonna say it's definitely not an AZ.
Got to love this colab
When Steve plays his whole body literally oozes engagement!! Love this soo much
had to subscribe to you since i just loved your attitude \m/

eu entrei no vídeo e eu nem precisei de mais de dois segundos pra reconhecer que era brasileiro, adorei o canal!
Steve using joint shifting to open the solo is a huge nod to handing the torch off to Tim and Scott.

They finished the video with the look of “we just beat music”…and it’s true. They win.
Steve Vai is a true evolving god, he just keeps getting better, rock on polyphia
Alip bata - juli 97.
Great perform 🤟
Just saw Steve Vai in Tampa, FL USA last month. It was fkin sick!
The definition of passing the torch.
Clay rocking that Neurotica drumset
Steve Vai was shockingly restrained in this solo. I get the sense he wanted to let Polyphia shine and not take the spotlight. The legato sound of Vai combined with the staccato sound of Polyphia worked nicely.

@10:45 "[Vai] made an effort to blend in", thus the death of ego.
I find these guys so funny & I can't tell you why. I think their happiness is infectious or something lol.

I agree 100%
🤘🏻
really enjoy your guys' videos but even moire so, i enjoy your alls incredible hair
than you for the kind words marshie :)
Tim Henson the lead guitarist also has signature vine look on his fretboards of his signature guitars also most likely a nod to Steve vai
It's a different vine from the one on the Jems and PIAs.
The vine on Tim’s 7 string is Ibanez’s standard vine used on certain Prestige and J.Craft models.
Its called tree of death, a play on Vais tree of life inlay.
Let's goooo
🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Friends, you both have truly magnificent hair.
thank you michael, that's always nice to hear :D
Gang gang gang les goooo
Chair goes up each level with each guitar player getting it once. Cool idea without doing anything over the top

Boys too much talking listen more😂Steve vai is the real OG check out the old movie cross roads ft Steve Vai boys you'll love it🙏
shut up pink shirts... your hair is amazing
Your audio is way too high compared to the video
It literally just turned into a talk about Steve Vai. I mean we all know he can play but it's all just bends, which just tells you it's overhype. lol
Steve Vai saved this song. His solo is amazing
"Saved" no, but very much added to it.
Polyphia is unique, there is no way to copy them, no one can. Ok???
Tolong subt indonesia diaktifin bro ,nggak ngerti
Man that lesbian/boy chick can shred
One guy "this is good", second "yeah, yeah" - this is uninteresting reaction. Good for you that Steve acknowledged you. I will not come back.
Steve vai plays polyphia better than polyphia 😂😂😂
😂😂😂
Yamandu Costa > Polyphia
This Polyphia nonsense is where I get off the metal train. This sounds like old audio errors you would get in protools when trying to sync audio and the sample rates didn't match.
