Pretty much the perfect song! Favorite FF song of all time! That haunting counter melody, “Keep you in the dark...” is carried throughout by the guitars then joined vocally on the last chorus. Totally makes the song for me. STELLAR TUNE! Great break down. Hawkins IS beast mode!

I didn't like it either. I think that's owed to the fact that it came on every five minutes on every alternative rock station, and the yelled-chorus vocals don't sound great on car speakers. A shame; we were missing out on a great song
Now that you explained why "our" song is amazing my wife - who knows nothing about music - finally payed attention and understood why I get so enthusiastic about your videos!

Talking about Dave Grohl having such good time - watch the video for The Pretender, and you can see him keeping time with his left foot like he's operating a kick pedal while playing guitar and singing. Epic.
This is my favorite foo fighters song and you’ve helped me love and appreciate it even more with this remarkable breakdown. Thank you Rick Beato, you are the best!
There were lots of reasons why Nevermind was a brilliant album, but in my opinion one very important reason was Dave Grohl's drumming. Not just because of the energy and his techniques, but especially because of the fact that he thinks more like a composer and not as just another drummer. Every break on that record was an integral part of the composition. And then he also seemed to be a cool, gentle and fun guy. And then he surprised everyone with the fact that he can basically do everything he sets his mind to. He keeps amazing me.
@@UnitedFeodor whoever said that was probably using "wrote the drums" as a very loose term, I mean it's likely he gave some directions for structure, like "go loud here then go quiet here" or "do a fill here then change the beat" but it's very unlikely he sat at the kit and showed Dave Grohl what to play.
This is my favorite FF song because of the power of all the parts, counterbalanced by that soft melody moving over the top of it. Brilliant songwriting.
Me: No WAY am I watching a 21 minute video about a 5 minute song! That's going to be so long and boring. Me, 21 minutes later: Subscribed and re-watching
That vocal doubling is so perfect - even the phase difference sounds constant - I suspect its the same track delayed, not sung twice. Very few people could ever get it so perfect naturally - Mercury being one. Some of his 'sung' doubles are so identical that a pitch/tempo differential had to be added in production to make it even sound doubled!
One of my all time favourite songs - there is so much going on to catch the ear - the changes in timing, the little guitar riffs that come and go, the changes in the feel as the song progresses, the vocals (how does he scream like that on tour?), the harmonies and I'm a singer and guitarist so I hadn't really picked up on the complexities in the drum part (thanks Rick)! - just epic. I guess there is a little "stairway" influence in there but its so different as to just be a nod to the song structure. Oh and I LOVE the ending - I'm always so pumped after listening to this!
This has been one of my favorite tracks of all time for the last twelve years, and I'm glad to see that you love it for its intricacies too. I just knew it was something special when the video dropped for it.
I love this song, It's the one song that introduced me to the band, and around that time wasting light came out and that really pulled me into the band. I do think it's sad that the Foo Fighters don't like Echoes Silence Patience and Grace themselves, because of the way it was produced and engineers. There have been interviews (you can see on youtube) on which Taylor complains that everything is time aligned, auto-tuned and sample replaced. Wasting Light was done on tape as an answer to ESP&G, which I do think is very cool
The Pretender is pure artistry. It's not just one of the greatest rock n roll songs of all time its one of the greatest Punk rock songs of all time. God bless the two nicest guy in music. Rick and Dave Grohl

The simple answer to "What Makes This Song Great?" is EVERY-EFFING-THING!! However, listening to your dissection explains the technical reasons why I love this song and provides a whole new appreciation for their talent.
One of my all time favorite songs. Separate Ways/Worlds Apart, Stairway to Heaven, Sweet Child'o'Mine, The Pretender. The rock gods touch someone every once in awhile. They touched the Foo's in the recording studio and they came up with The Pretender. Magnificent song for sure. The Foo's are great and Dave Grohl is a rock and roll maniac.

And great break down of the song, as always. Let's keep this Foo love rolling!!

I was ‘late to the game’ as Pretender was the first Foo Fighters song I really gave full attention to. Thanks Rick for uncovering all the layers of this amazing tune.
Rick listens to music like football coaches watch football. Constantly rewinding and playing to understand what's happening on every level.
Every time I hear a song Rick has "what makes this..." I hear parts I didn't before. Truly makes like hearing it for the first time....again.
True. I hadn't noticed the bass part in the bridge
JEFF RENSHAW this time it was the amazing vocal harmonies for me
Rick: So you’re getting a first inversion D major
Me: Right...yeah, of course. I mean I think we all picked up on that
😂🤣
@Alexandru Vaduva I wish you could have heard how hard my eyes “clacked” when I rolled them to the side.
20:22 I love the look on Ricks face from how amazing the vocals are.
To me, this is the Foo Fighters' best song. Melodic beauty mixed with raw aggression.
17:45 Rick's face is the reason why these videos are so amazing
Lol 😂 Absolutely!
"Ladies and gentlemen . . . . Foo FIGHT-ers!" -Christopher Walken, SNL
🤣🤣
Hahaha
I'm surprised foo fighters aren't chinese
found this Channel with episode one. as blink is my favorite band, the algorithm put it in my recommendations. Been with the channel since. It’s become a part of my regular life but I don’t take your content for granted. Thank you much. These videos are amazing and are very much appreciated!
same story here, brother
...didn't care for "the pretender" and then I saw this video - now I love that song. What kind of sorcery is this?
I didn't like it either. I think that's owed to the fact that it came on every five minutes on every alternative rock station, and the yelled-chorus vocals don't sound great on car speakers. A shame; we were missing out on a great song
Rick waved his hand in front of your face in a slightly circular motion and said "This IS the song you're looking for" You got Beato'd man. 🤷♂️
@@ddogg14 man radio ruins songs. 🤦♂️
Rick even made me like Blink182 so, I mean...
Lol.
Now that you explained why "our" song is amazing my wife - who knows nothing about music - finally payed attention and understood why I get so enthusiastic about your videos!
I've always appreciated the drums on this song and with the breakdown of each part, I appreciate it more. I love Taylor Hawkins random drum fills. The guitar playing in this song is also so bouncy.
Beato + Foo Fighters = A Like before even watching the damn video
so true
The way you break down all these songs is so absolutely incredible and inspiring and it's exactly what I want to be able to do with time. I absolutely love analyzing songs and discovering what is it within the elements of the music that creates such an enjoyable listening experience! These videos are the best! They give you a whole new perspective on the song along with being very fascinating and informative! Thank you, Rick!!
Kurt wrote most drums for Nevermind, actually
@@UnitedFeodor whoever said that was probably using "wrote the drums" as a very loose term, I mean it's likely he gave some directions for structure, like "go loud here then go quiet here" or "do a fill here then change the beat" but it's very unlikely he sat at the kit and showed Dave Grohl what to play.
@subcomandante marcos interesting to know, thanks dude!
This is my favorite FF song because of the power of all the parts, counterbalanced by that soft melody moving over the top of it. Brilliant songwriting.
I always thought it was an effect on the vocals, that doubling is insanely tight
Manuel Martin doubling vocals is TIGHT
Me: No WAY am I watching a 21 minute video about a 5 minute song! That's going to be so long and boring.
Me, 21 minutes later: Subscribed and re-watching
I used to listen to this particular song on repeat for a lot longer than 21 minutes at a time. It is plenty good for 21 minutes or more :)
Exactly my thoughts
Welcome
Right? Watched it 4 times now. His Everlong breakdown is great too!
That’s exactly what I did lol
That vocal doubling is so perfect - even the phase difference sounds constant - I suspect its the same track delayed, not sung twice. Very few people could ever get it so perfect naturally - Mercury being one. Some of his 'sung' doubles are so identical that a pitch/tempo differential had to be added in production to make it even sound doubled!
I always sing Sesame Street's "One of These Things Is Not Like the Others" to this tune.
🤣
Lol I've done that before too
One of my all time favourite songs - there is so much going on to catch the ear - the changes in timing, the little guitar riffs that come and go, the changes in the feel as the song progresses, the vocals (how does he scream like that on tour?), the harmonies and I'm a singer and guitarist so I hadn't really picked up on the complexities in the drum part (thanks Rick)! - just epic. I guess there is a little "stairway" influence in there but its so different as to just be a nod to the song structure. Oh and I LOVE the ending - I'm always so pumped after listening to this!
Also, the first time I heard this song, I got goosebumps. Such a perfect and perfectly arranged hard rock song
Do Reptilia by the Strokes!!! Or something from Is This It
Yes please ^^^
im still waiting
Yes rick needs to get on it with the strokes
Mr Beato, never stop, you are doing something unique and valuable. Thank you. Daniel
This has been one of my favorite tracks of all time for the last twelve years, and I'm glad to see that you love it for its intricacies too. I just knew it was something special when the video dropped for it.
That bridge is pure genius. I swear, that major bass riff under the climax of a minor run is out of this world!
That last "WHO ARE YOU" is so extremely powerful. Dave Grohl is an amazing musician and performer.
So true!! This is exactly why Foo Fighters are my favorite band! Dave is a Master Craftsman.
It is really cool listening to you break these songs down the way you do!! You really show how difficult it must be to make these songs, then to produce them!!!
Thank goodness there's someone out there that appreciates these little fills and "off time" moments in music as much as I do. Rick, you make me feel like less of a nerd and more of an enthusiast. Strength in numbers man!
Rick “It’s Just So Killer” Beato
Rick "in the pocket" beato
The simple answer to "What Makes This Song Great?" is EVERY-EFFING-THING!! However, listening to your dissection explains the technical reasons why I love this song and provides a whole new appreciation for their talent.
You know its getting good when Rick does the "hoooooooo!"
Vocal doubled are on like 90% of DG’s vocal tracks and i love it.
This song was my inspiration when I was learning the guitar and made the foo fighters my favorite band. So many layers.
Would love for you to do, Muse- Knights of Cydonia
Heard EVERY song you review, but NEVER appreciated ANY of them as much, as after I watch your breakdowns....
Thank You!
Wife graduated from Fredonia...Son goes to Ithaca...live outside of Utica...
I’d really love to see you dissect the Arctic Monkeys
Jeremiah Rodriguez YES!!!
Jeremiah Rodriguez this
Took the words right out of my friend and i’s mouths
Please
Literally
I saw The Foo Fighters in little ol Bossier City, Louisiana ... it was a bucket list concert. They really are soo awesome live!
Rick, “What makes these songs great”......You do Rick, you do.
These isolated tracks prove what a great band Foo Fighters are! They sound amazing by themselves!
All my Life is excellent as well.
I second this.
I’d love to watch Rick analyse that song!
I love how Rick takes a song I already love and makes me appreciate and love it even more.
Man ! I never realised that this track had so many layers in the end ! That bass run is insane, the drums are incredible too and thoses little riffs on guitar... oh my gosh !
Thanks so much Rick for this video ! I'm gonna listen to this for the entire day :D
Always when Rick talks about and then listens to the drums, he makes this special "drums face"... Pay attention to it... Amazing!
Love this song and now that I am hearing things in it that I wasn't aware of before, I love it even more. Dave has one of the best voices for rock in the business. Amazing grit for those down and dirty parts. I wish I could scream like that!! And even though a lot of their songs are pretty straight forward on the surface, there are always so many cool and deceptively intricate layers.
Great pick for video subject Rick! And great break down of the song, as always. Let's keep this Foo love rolling!!
13:02 - I've been listening to this song for over a decade and I always thought the line was "One of us ain't enough like the other!", but thanks to this solo I finally realize the line is "What if I say I'm not like the others?"
That was awesome!! I love that song because it is so chaotic but still melodic and meditative. Most people hear all the swirling music and jam out to the song. I just zone into the background melody ... keep you in the dark you know they all...
An amazing song from my favourite Foo Fighters album. I'm glad I could hear the brilliant bass during the bridge through your video. Also, Dave Grohl's isolated vocals are insane 😳
