The tv stand in my house as a kid used magnet closure. I always thought it was amazing and weak magnets would do very well here, just enough to keep it shut but not cause damage from pulling hard like velcro might do
As Christine wrote, you can easily just ask in shops. Don't just take them, but yeah most shops, especially big ones that are dealing with their deliveries are usually happy to give people their empty boxes. Wooden Pallets can also be had for free if you go to the right places.

Very good multi purpose storage and toy. I suggest adding washers to the bolt and screw for durability to the hinge hardware.

I get all the free cardboard I can use from appliance stores and the dollar store and the local 'Big Box' stores.
