"but the frame rate..." ahah this was way before the Archimedes days ;) but yeah this expansion is a big game changer for the Electron, thank you very much Tom. Now I want an Elk! :D

Hi there, firstly, just to say, love the channel, very informative. Great videos! Can I please ask a little advice? I have just aquired an Acorn Electron plus a load of upgrades but I'm trying to get the cassette player to load, I have an aftermarket Whsmith cassette player, and a 7 pin din plug cable with 3 Jacks on the other end. Red, yellow and black. I can work out the yellow as its smaller, so that's REM, but what about the others? So far no joy for it "finding" a tape loading. If you have any idea how to connect properly then I would be very grateful. Can send pics of tape player etc if you want. Thanks in advance for your help. Keep up the good work 👍🏻

Hello Grant ... First off disconnect all data cables from the player and play the tape, should her the data playing over the players internal speaker. If so then the tape deck is working. Out of the 3 jacks for reading data you only need 'Ear' which plugs into the headphone or line out on the player leave the two remaining unplugged.
You may need to adjust the volume on the player, this is trial and error. play the tape back into the electron and adjust until you see some data being read onscreen. At this point, stop the tape break the program read on the elk and start again (rewind the tape) for a full read.
You should her a distinctive click from the Electron every time you read tape data, if not there might be a hardware issue with the machine.

@@WiFiSheep hi mate, thank you for your response. Unfortunately the tape player does not have an ear jack, but I assume it must've been used with the computer as it came with it. It has "load", "sound in", "aux", "save" and "rem". Any idea which would be the "ear"? Maybe I should just plug some earphones into each one until I hear something?

ear would be load then. Rem is for remote which I wouldn't use. I assume the tape deck plays tapes ok? As that needs to be working first and formost

@@WiFiSheep yes, it plays nice and loud and clear. So I'll try the load, and try both different ends in it, maybe try a few tapes in. Fingers crossed! Thank you

Good luck! Tapes are awful tbh! ... The audio level cant be to loud or quite so that'll be trail and error hit or miss
