This was their first single, and blew away the relatively few people who heard it. May I implore you to do another song of theirs, Goodbye, which is an absolute *BANGER*, as well as possibly the best showcase for her inimitable, plangent timbre. A unique, instantly recognisable voice.
Plangent is my favourite all time word, perfectly describes Harriet's voice here.. Rarely used, but when I see someone else use it to describe something I agree with, there is hope..
Yes! One of my all time favourite bands, without a doubt. Harriet's vocals are angelic & keep getting better through the 3 albums - the harmonies at the end of 'When I'm Thinking About You' (from Static & Silence) still make me go weak! How about another 1 of theirs next Sunday, Nick?!
Love seeing these reactions to The Sundays. I'm a huge fan. My favourite song of theirs is a b-side that never made the album (somehow). Aptly named "Life Goes On" - a crushingly beautiful song about depression/mental health. Relatable to say the least and yet it leaves me with a feeling of hope. Harriet's vocal performance is wonderfully poignant. Highly recommended. Greetings from Alberta.
Absolutely love The Sundays and that one of a kind voice. They need to come back and give us more of this…. Amazing music from an excellent band…. Good choice playing and reacting to them. 🎉🎉😊😊😊
Almost every song on The Sundays' debut album is really good. If you want to listen to more, I'd recommend either "I kicked a boy" of "My finest hour".
'I won' is my favourite off that album. I may have mentioned that before somewhere. Find the album by The Lemonheads called It's A Shame About Ray, which was released in 1992. A bunch of really short songs but every one is worth your while.
The Sundays were championed early on by Morrissey, and you can clearly hear the jangly guitar influence of The Smiths. Harriet wheeler had a superb voice, and I loved the way she used to sing in her own accent. It's such a pity that they only released three albums before retiring from the music business and moving to the States.
I'm not sure if Morrissey ever championed The Sundays. They were often hailed as a replacement band to a recently demised The Smiths by the music press and signed to Rough Trade but don't remember Morrissey publicly commenting on them like he did about the band James.
John Peel was hugely influential in promoting many post-punk/alternative acts over 30 years or more. One of his Radio 1 partners-in-crime, Janice Long, sadly died on Christmas Day. In the mid-80s Peel's show followed on from hers, and they formed a great double-act on the BBC's weekly TV chart show Top Of The Pops.
John Peel started his radio career in the sixties and broke Bowie, Beefheart and T Rex among others. Yeah, loved him with Janice, so sad she passed away recently too.
You should check out the innocence mission (they are often called the American Sundays). They, like the Sundays, are a couple that make music; but unlike the Sundays, I'm are still making music. The Sundays released two albums in quick succession and then dragged their feet to make a third; they still haven't released a fourth (Blind, RW&A, and Static & Silence) IM has released albums from the late '80s until now. They started out as a 4/5 piece and now perform as a 3 piece. Karen Peris sings lead, but she also plays guitars and plays piano/organ/keyboard. Her husband, Don, plays a harmonizing guitar to her lead (he used to harmonize vocally). And they are accompanied by a stand-up bass. Their biggest hit was probably 'Bright as Yellow' from the '90s film 'Empire Records' soundtrack. I found their songs more meaningful and more emotional than the Sundays lovely songs.
If you like The Sundays, Echobelly's Great Things is also a wonderful female indie anthem from a few years later. Then there's Motorbike To Heaven by Salad. Wonderful female voices 💕
Here's some suggestions of alt bands with female singers that I think you'll like: Concrete Blonde (rock) Book of Love (keyboard dance) Suzanne Vega (indie)

In Goodbye, towards the end there is a chord change that just makes me SWOON.
@@thisworldofwater8017 I came here to say the exact same thing!

I adore the Sundays. Need more of that voice. Splits through the nonsense of life.
Crisp! Great way of describing her voice.

I highly recommend that you react to You’re Not The Only One That I Know from The Sundays, it’s such a beautiful song
One of my favourites too

This whole album and the following album are pretty much perfection.
Other great female lead 90's bands were Curve and Lush.
Such an underrated band.
Best Sunday's song...
Harriet has a voice that just makes a part of you inside go ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh..... a giant, beautiful sigh

Great song. Would recommend you try The Cranberries.
Do anybody know she look now in 2023
Nick, please do Mariya Takeuchi - Doors of Life
She’s criticizing life’s demands a perfect behind the stresses out on especially younger people and coming out of Thatcherism
There's so many songs that I've reacted to by UK bands that talk about Thatcher in some way, big or small.
More women on the channel? Try Tori Amos. Start with Silent all these Years.
