Developed by Monolith Soft, Baten Kaitos : Origins is a JRPG that I've been meaning to play for a long time now. Finally I got a chance to chew on this 45 + hour game.
Origins is a prequel to Baten Kaitos : Eternal Wings and The Lost Ocean and I'll do my best to compare them but not take the spot light away from Origins as it is its own game worthy of talking about among the greatest jrpgs.

Man this brings me back. Thanks for reviewing such old games in 2021 -- I'm so glad I can look back and see updated perspectives on the stuff that I played as a kid. Keep it up :)

it took me 10 years to realize it but apparently they sold me the origins disks inside the eternal wings and the lost ocean case. I was a kid but i always wondered why i never saw the scenes on the back of the case, even though i finished the game. And why the disk said origins on it when the case doesn't say that. But they both said baten kaitos so i figured that was probably how it was. Either way, i loved origins and i booted it up just now for another playthrough

The lore from "Origins" is so much important for the first game "Eternal Wing and the Lost Ocean", especially because we learn the "true" identity of Malpercio (antagonist from Eternal Wing and the Lost Ocean). I was quite mind blown by that. Can't wait for the HD Remaster! :)

This game was the first JRPG I ever played as a kid growing up, and quickly became my favorite game of all time, and it still is. I love the combat, the art, the voice acting, the story, all of it. I'm really glad someone is drawing more attention to this game so many years later, and I hope Nintendo miraculously ports it to the Switch (the touch screen system would be PERFECT for the card based combat).
As for my strategy, I usually made elemental decks for each major dungeon/boss battle, then a general deck that specialized in nothing to get through the rest of the game. I also found armor to be far, far less necessary in general gameplay, as you'll eventually get cards that make your attacks hit harder and you'll heal more, coupled with the auto heal between battles meaning you can often play a bit or recklessly than in the original. I love this game to death, and I'm so happy to see someone review it now. Thanks!

I love hearing about people's first jrpgs! I found it easier to setup decks in the first game as far as elements. I feel like origins is more about offense however you can get it done.
Also there's rumours monolith is going to release these on the switch 🤞

This game was such a gem. fortunate to still have both original copies of this game as well as the first one in good condition. sadly, i wrote in the notes section from the first one because i was 10 and couldnt remember the codes you needed on that airship level haha

One thing I love about this game is that it reintroduces you to people and places from the first one in such a way, that it lets you fall in love with side characters that, in the first one, are irredeemable villains. Geldeblame is one such character for me. I don't mind having insight into evil characters or liking them, as long as the groundwork for their villain arch is in tact. Malpercio's origin is awesome and explains a plothole from the first game in regards to the character pulling the strings and their connection to the evil god.

I love the original, but I found Origins to be a or redundant with all of the reused assets. Also I didn’t like the new combat. I felt I could never watch it play out, it was so frantic. I understand how the first game’s combat is seen as too slow, but I don’t personally feel that the combat in Origins was the answer.

For me, I always filled up my deck to capacity with a full 60 cards. To hell with this "streamlined" thing, mixing and matching cards and finding out how they all work together is part of the fun of this game. You don't have a good hand? Discarding is easy, makes your next turn come much quicker, and good dialogue choices mean the card you want can appear all on its own.
I also always made seperate decks for each of the elements, and paid close attention to the field guide so I'd know which ones to use.

If you havent had the chance to experience it, please reach out to nintendo and tell them wanks they need to bring it back to switch or whatever console they come out with next. I sadly had to sell my copy a while ago, and since I live in Europe it's not possible for me to play it anymore without also buying a Gamecube and a Freeloader, so this is one of those games I'll only be able to replay when (and if) they finally re-release it for modern consoles. I really hope they do, this was a really cool and unique RPG that is almost on par with the first one, and I wish more people got to check it out.
