    I’ll say it! I needed to hear this! Been boating all my life and complacency is a killer! Thanks for putting this back in the front of my head instead of the back. Your passion for the sport is 2nd to none.

    This is the Gospel. Preach it DC. I went from boating my entire childhood to now fishing kayak tournaments and I wear a NRS Chinook every second on the water. It's the most important piece of equipment you own.

    This is God telling me something. I’m up in the mountains bass fishing in Arizona and last night in my room at the lodge I started pondering how my Mustang life jacket even works. Then I started pondering why I don’t wear it when I’m fun fishing! Thanks DC starting tomorrow morning I’m wearing that some gun no matter what! Great vid

    I totaled my boat last year on the Alabama river near the amphitheater running 60. I hit a log (never seen it) boat hooked and I thought I was going to rip the steering wheel off! Never went into the drink but was wearing my life jacket. From that day forward I’ve always had a different level of respect for boating safety. WEAR YOUR LIFE JACKET!! YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY WILL APPRECIATE IT!!

    That High School team that went over Pickwick Dam was a tragedy. It's horrible that accident spurred the change that was needed to keep High School tournaments safe by postponing or cancelling events during flooded conditions.

    I fish below some of the same dams you do (Lay Dam & Mitchell ) and Im glad that you made this point.
    Hopefully people will listen and learn from this. It means alot more coming from a sucsessful pro such as yourself.
    Years ago a boat was anchored off to the side of #6 turbine at lay dam, the anchor hung up and another turbine was turned on. Rising water sank the boat but the guy in it was ok. That guy was my Dad. Respect those Dams! Thanks Dustin for making this video.

    Awesome PSA!!! It happens all the time people hauling butt and it takes a split second to get into serious trouble. On the Cal Delta came around a corner doing 45mph and there was a 4ft swell almost ejected! Look at Gary Dobyns, almost the same thing. Be safe and don’t be that guy in the tournament!!

  • @markburton3749
    @markburton3749 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I actually had that happen to me in 1997 in my first bass boat. I was young and inexperienced for the most part and bought a boat without a working kill switch. I was going down the lake at about 40mph and my steering cable broke and my motor turned hard to one side and I was ejected from the boat. Now my boat was doing circles at 40mph and I was trapped in its path. The boat came at me several times and I was able to dive down and get out of the way but I soon tired out from the weight of all the clothes I had on. The last time it came at me I was unable to get out of the way and the prop hit my hand severing all five fingers. At the moment all I knew was that I was hit and I was exhausted and I soon gave out and everything went black. I should also add that I wasn’t wearing a life jacket. At this point I was drowning and thank the Lord above another boat saw all this happening and came to my rescue. He actually tried to get in front of my boat to stop it but my boat was running at such a speed that it just hit his boat and jumped it like a ramp, so at this point all he knew to do was try to ram my boat and try to capsize it. Thankfully he was successful and got my boat stopped and then his attention was to me. He told me that he reached as far down into the water as he could and grabbed my rain jacket hood because I was sinking to the bottom of the lake. He was able to get me pulled out and performed CPR on me and brought me back to life. I then spent the next 3 years having surgeries and therapy on my hand to get 20% use of it. I am so thankful Dustin that you brought attention to this because accidents can happen so quickly out on the water that can injure or kill you and I am living proof of that!

    The first thing I was taught is that boats don't have brakes. When teaching my son how to run a boat, I put a marker buoy out, got on plane, and took my foot off the throttle when we got to the buoy so he could see just how far you actually go when you let off. This was to reinforce how much control you really don't have and how far ahead you need to pay attention. It's a real eye opener if you've never done it.

    This should be said and said again by every touring pro who has a platform. Good on you DC. I'd add that a boater safety course is highly recommended. My dad took me and my brother every Wednesday night for a month when we were younger, heck before we could even drive a car, so we'd know how to properly handle a boat. Super valuable info, almost all accidents on the water are preventable!

  • @scottsime5197

    Something to add DC. I always hear people say "I'm a great swimmer" but when your head hits the windshield or boat before you hit the water you might not be awake to swim..! Besides it's cool to wear it nowadays..

    I agree with you entirely. After being in a boating accident here in Alabama I don’t ride without one. Watching the cowling pop off the motor and fly over my head was enough to show me that I was very lucky. Also very Thankful the transom held and the motor didn’t get ripped off. Messed my back and neck all up from it. Then a week later two guys were killed hitting a piling on a shallow flat running at night.

    Would like to add...when fishing alone in the cold water, wear a life jacket, too.
    5 MPH wind, your Spotlock kicks on high, you lose your balance, fall into 50 degree water with all the clothes on...you're not gonna be able to catch up to your boat due to the wind. And if you are able to catch up to your boat, the only way to get back in is to ride your lower unit while you trim it up. I rescued a guy one time on Gville in 2015. He lost his balance and fell out. He was holding onto a bridge piling when I heard his voice.
    50/50/50 You have 50% chance of survival of spending 50 minutes in 50 degree water....and that's if you are wearing a lifejacket.
