What A S**T Week! Becoming A Car Dealer - Episode 6

- This week I cause a bit of an issue at HQ. The Landrover Discovery Sport brings new problems, The Hyundai Tucson gets a clean set of heals, Nigel Mansell comes to clean my cars and I finish off with a pint in a glorious country pub.

Hi Sam, thanks for the entertaining update. Re your VAT/costs spreadsheet, perhaps add the VAT recoverable from allowable expenses to drive a true profit calculation?
Always wait until the vehicle is 100 % ready, run it around for a bit as well, saves all the hassle, bit daft taking bookings then having to disappoint people, worst scenario is the cars not ready for a few days and the advert looses steam, people don't want to think anything about their new car other than it's had regular services. You've got to do the work anyway, so do it first. I sold one today, it was 100% ready, customers came and I ran it home for them, they really don't want to hear, oh it needs work, I'll let you know.
Well yes, I normally would but i had the car up for sale the day before the service thinking that if i did have an enquiry, I could book in a test drive having just collected it. I then had 3 enquiries! They are all absolutely fine to wait a couple of days. Not ideal, but I'm glad I got the interest. All three people know exactly what's happening to the car and one of them has said how appreciative they are to be kept in the loop. I guess it can work both ways as long you're just clear and upfront with the customer which can work in your favour ! Thanks for watching and commenting.
Gold plated advice and exactly right . Parts deliveries can take longer and jobs can snowball as we know. I personally don't even think about advertising until everything is MOT'd, finished and well tested. Don't need the pressure and potential lost sale.
I was just enjoying a nice spot of supper there Sam, a decent-sized wedge of Melton Mowbray with vine tomatoes, an egg sandwich and a yummy glass of homemade lemonade. THEN! out comes the Anaconda narrative. The image of you squeezing one out swiftly entered my mind. Now the image of you on the Chaise De Buche with ya pants around ya ankles didn't bother me one jot - it was the thought of that 'thing' thrashing around in the pan pre-flush. Thank God I didn't have sausages for supper.( Ps where did you get that cap with dog on the back ??- I need one )
Well, I hope I didnt spoil your gourmet supper last night! It was quite a struggle! The hat is from the Tally Ho. I may even bring out my own ones soon!

Great video, with the blank corner in the unit how about putting a studio or a shelving unit for cleaning kit and parts. Maybe the option to upsell as people buy?

Good video.. my advice on EV cars , steer clear can be a nightmare .. battery issues and electric faults etc way to technical..
Anti EV rubish, Nothing to service on EV's and items to replace, Brakes (less used than an an ice car so last longer) tyres, wipers,

Well, this is my first one. I'll keep an open mind and just see how it all pans out. I'm very impressed Mitsubishi is even entertaining the idea of replacing the battery.

One little thing I would like to pass on (from experience). Never use the word 'Cancel', as it comes across as a very final and closed kind of word. I always found that it was better to use 'Postpone' as that still leaves it open and able to go forward.👍
With regards to the other regarding repairs, I would definitely make sure the car was 100% before selling to a customer as, at the end of the day, you want to establish a good name in the business.
Funny you should say that, I said we need to postpone, not cancel! You’re right, some people find the word cancel means the end of the world! Absolutely, I’m going to try and get these cars 100% before sale, within reason of course!

Yes, it was a little quiet on the pub front this week but we do have to try these things! I did take a visit there today to make sure it was still in place though!

Yes, Nigel did a cracking job! Just a small dent costs about £250 for a pull out and respray so yes, small details cost a lot to repair.
Excellent work on the channel I enjoy watching all of your videos. I wanted to ask a question. When you are buying cars from auction or off a private seller to then sell on yourself from home etc. Do you have to register yourself as the owner/keeper of the car as per the V5 document when you initially purchase the car? Or can you leave this until you sell the car on to the customer eventually whenever that is?
Thank you so much! No, dont register yourself as an owner, just go onto the DVLA site and bring the vehicle into trade. No new owner gets added to the V5, instead it tells the DVLA that a trader is handling the car and it automatically stops the previous owners tax. You can then only drive the car with trade plates once you have added the car to your trade insurance, which is usually just a 2-second job through an online form from your insurance company. I hope that helps
Nigel Mansell has done a good job on the cleaning. All you need now is Alain Prost on standby for plumbing and you’ll be sorted. I feel like an undercover area for valeting and viewings would be good…any plans for that if you’re able to build something in that area?
Oh, that would be ideal, Unfortunately, I don't have any undercover area. If I was dealing with high-performance cars then absolutely, yes. Once we're settled into the new office we'll look at various options if needed.
Do you think it might be worth waiting for Mitsubishi to go through it, especially if there could be a free battery which could add value? Perhaps the water was from the drip tray after the pressure wash. Your new premises look amazing. Have a good week.

Really enjoy your humour and wit, which is also much improved thanks to the mic investment recently. We were laughing at loo your troubles as the same happened to me on holiday in Florida. Even after trying to break the offending article up with one of my children’s snorkels I eventually had to go to reception to explain what I had done. Keep up the great content 👍

Water from the landrover is probably from the air con - was it running a while before you moved it with the air con on, if so nothing to worry about just condensation
I dont think I had the air con on but I've had a message from Nigel Mansell to say it's most definitely as a result of cleaning the engine bay.
If cash flow allows, hold out until Mitsubishi have done what it needs. I fear you'd get a handback otherwise.

Maybe a mid week vindaloo option would keep that anaconda from returning! Nigel did a great job on the LR and I’m sure once the brakes are sorted it’ll be snapped up. Oh and well done on mastering the Mitsubishi and Tucson pronunciation! You’re becoming a cunning linguist. 🤔 which is not a bad trait in the motor trade!

Evening I would say that water on the road from the Discovery is probably . Just water from where your guy cleaned the engine bay laying on the Engine under tray . Also I would let Mitsubishi do their thing regards Health check on the battery which ever way it will make it more saleable peace of mind and all that ..Enjoy your well deserved pint Love the Channel and content

I’ve driven loads of new plug in hybrids and to be honest none of them got much more than 20 miles on a full charge. They are in fact pretty useless as once the battery is flat the mpg is awful.
Yes it seems so! I'm interested to see what Mitsubishi say about the battery's health though!

Thank you! I’ve used photoshop for years now and I use the adobe package for pretty much everything. I think I pay £8 a month for it and for me and the way I work, it’s a dream. Yes, overheads are a huge thing to consider but I think everyone is so individual and their skill levels are all different. For me, having photoshop or a tool like this saves me so much time, so I would consider £8 a month money well spent. Really appreciate your comment and I’m glad you like the video! Same

Isn’t your VAT due on profits only? So you should include all costs on VAT due not just the sales price - initial buying cost.
VAT is chargeable on the difference between the purchase price and selling price of a second-hand car, not including all the work done in between
Just looked up the hmrc rules and you are spot on- vat at 16.67 (1/6th) on sales for goods such as cars etc

All I can say is that he is very much alive and kicking!
On your spread sheet, can't you claim back the VAT on things like the MOT, Clean, Parts, Service etc, so your VAT should be less no?
It won't be less. In effect under the margin scheme you pay twice and reclaim once. It is an unfair scheme.
Yes, I can claim VAT back for servicing and parts etc but there is no VAT on MOT's as its a government test. I keep the whole VAT amount in a separate pot as there will also be corporation tax to pay on profits at the end of the year and the surplus would significantly contribute to this.
