    I am making a Rotary Spark Gap for a Tesla Coil using a computer fan very similar to the one pictured in this simulation.
    I needed to identify the location of 5 points at the air intake of my fan with the greatest air velocity (to draw away iodized air from high voltage contacts). I have 5 copper spokes (made from a large clock gear) that is mounted to and will rotate with the fan blades - so they will be at fixed points in relation to the fan blades. These spokes will make contact 5 times per rotation to two stationary contacts mounted in front of the fan. (I cannot use the outflow of the fan as the only rotating mounting surface is at the intake side - and the fan is not reversable).
    As any two of my 5 spokes pass in front of my pair of contacts - the circuit is closed ('on' and 'off' 5 times per rotation).
    This simulation shows the greatest air speed at the INTAKE of this type of fan appears to be just AFTER the leading edge of each blade, about half-way towards the center axis of the length of each blade.
    Now I know how to best mount my contact spokes for my Rotary Spark Gap!

    I have an error in the calculation - that the selected boundary between the solid medium and the gas medium does not intersect. I chose the same place on the cooler. Does anyone know a solution? Perhaps this is due to the fact that when setting up the flow simultion in the 2020 version on the last page of the window, I did not have the choice to match the x / y / z axis?

    Thank you for this amazing tutorial, it became the solution i needed even with a closed enviroment fluid. I still cant make the last step in the animation in which you select a part of the assembly to make it rotate. It just doesnt appear, i can only rotate the whole assembly, but i dont now why in your case the "Part2" appears right away in the tree. I would really appreaciate a solution for that. Thank you!

    A Question: Could you calculate the applied force on the fan blade's shaft?

    • @Gillambryce
      @Gillambryce 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yes. You should convert the rpm to a velocity (a fixed point going N m/s around an axis) there are online calculators for this. An example, 2000rpm fan times a 5cm radius has a velocity of 10 meters per second. You'll then want to calculate centripetal force (not to be confused with centrifugal force) Mass of the moving parts around the axis times velocity squared, divided by the radius of the motion. I'm not sure how much one of those weighs but say it were .05 kilos or 50 grams, there would be about 108 Newtons of outward force on the axis. Those calculators are online friend. Hope this helps!
