  • We made time to visit the Longues-sur-Mer Battery, one of the best-preserved coastal batteries from World War II in Normandy. Located between Omaha and Gold Beach, it was an important part of the Atlantic Wall, the German defense line along the coast. The battery consisted of four large artillery pieces, protected by concrete bunkers, with a range that could reach the Allied landing beaches. During D-Day, it played a significant role before the Allied forces managed to silence the guns. Longues-sur-Mer is the only battery in Normandy that still retains several of its original guns in situ. It was listed as a historical monument in October 2001 and remains in a good state of conservation, offering a sobering glimpse into the history of the invasion
