    Whether consumed on horseback during a busy cattle drive or packed in school lunches, Biltong is definitely our go-to. Biltong originated as a survival food on the move with Ox Wagons and were made with only salt and pepper. This remains the best recipe for the best Biltong. No vinegar.

      Hey Dirk,
      I see you are well versed in the art of biltong, and the origin stories too 😎
      We personally love having a bit of a vinegar taste to our sea salt biltong, and as extra measure when making larger quantities as we do, we love the antimicrobial benefits to helping the cure the steaks without a worry for any bacteria growing.
      I do have friends that make biltong with just salt, or a mix of their own spices, and it's definitely a personal preference for a lot of us, but thank you for sharing the origins, and also the OG recipe used 👏🏼

      @@barbellfoods Sure. I was not trying to be negative toward your products. I grew up with plain salted and peppered Biltong on the farm in South Africa and only the Droë Wors had Coriander added. Salt is an excellent preservative. Today I buy Biltong too and of course it was bathed in vinegar. It's nice. It's not bad at all and some extra spices like Chilli or Chutney can make for an interesting experience. I would however make myself some plain salted and peppered Biltong once or twice a year out of nostalgia and still love it. Maybe my suggestion could be added to you list of flavors. Use course salt though.

    Congrats! This looks like better packaged biltong than we find in South Africa where biltong comes from. There are a few local packaged brands like BullBrand, Takkis, all the chain storer have their own etc, but they are terrible. It's not even qualifying as biltong. That said, we can walk into any butcher and ask for fresh biltong the way you like it. wet, medium, dry.. which ever.
    But well done for 'n proper packaged product.

      Buying meat with fluids still in it is pricey, so imagine concentrating it, by removing all fluids, before selling it.

    • @barbellfoods
      @barbellfoods  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey Stephen,
      I appreciate your feedback and I understand your concerns about the price point.
      The reason biltong is more expensive per gram than regular meat is because during the air-drying process, the steaks reduce in size to less than half their weight, meaning that 1kg of biltong is equivalent to roughly 2kg-2.5kg of raw steak. This essentially means that biltong is a very dense steak, with all the same nutritional value. We have also made the decision to prioritize quality in the ingredients we use to make our biltong, therefore, we only use the highest-quality, organic meat from Australia's best free-range farms, which is simply more costly than if we were to use lower quality beef.
      Regardless, I understand that the price point may not be for everyone so I appreciate your feedback. We simply believe that the juice is worth the squeeze when it comes to buying high-quality biltong.
      Thanks again for your kind words and support
      All the best,

    • @barbellfoods
      @barbellfoods  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Thickymcghee,
      We believe the value behind cutting against the grain is a simpler to eat piece each time, if you cut with the grain than the meat will be more stringy and long as it is following the muscle fibers, whereas if you cut against the grain, it helps to cut into, bite into, and break apart the biltong pieces ✊🏼

    What is the shelf life how long can you store your biltong ?

    • @barbellfoods
      @barbellfoods  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for reaching out about this!
      It's a 12-month shelf life on all our meat snacks when unopened and stored somewhere cool & dry (e.g pantry).
      The shelf life can also be extended indefinitely if the bags are frozen. Once opened, we recommending consuming within 14 days.
      If you want to keep a bag opened for longer than this, we recommend storing it in the fridge. Or if you prefer to keep opened bags in the pantry for long periods of time, we'd advise storing the product in brown paper bags so it can 'breathe'. The brown paper will slowly absorb moisture from the meat and dries the product out a little further, which will actually help preserve it.
      You can read more here if interested: www.barbellfoods.com.au/pages/storing-your-biltong

    • @barbellfoods
      @barbellfoods  22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hey there,
      While this is a good mention, with the added oxygen, and possible chance of the meat snacks being stored in hot weather, there's too much chance of possible moisture building up.
      So we like to keep less oxygen, and with the oxygen absorber bags, this helps to keep the products for longer extended periods of time as they are already air dried over a period of 6 days, being ready to eat.
      Up to 14 months! if kept in a cool dry area unopened, or 2 weeks if opened without the need for a refrigerator 🙂

      Hey Lachy, sorry it was not to your liking mate but I appreciate you giving it a go. Silverside is a traditional cut that's used to make biltong because it's got a nice layer of fat running along it. If you're used to jerky, this might not be your thing as jerky is very lean. The general consensus on grain fed beef i totally see your perspective on, but we choose to use the highest quality we can, so this is indeed one of the best qualities of beef around.
      We source from our beef supplier Arcadian, their beef is both grass-fed & finished and certified organic.
      We chose to highlight the grass-fed claim over the organic claim on the bag as it is possible to have beef that is organic but grain fed.
      Hope this helps to show why we believe our beef is top notch!

      It's a pretty good price considering how damn good this biltong is 😋
      In all seriousness, thanks for reaching out Winston and I appreciate your concern. I understand that biltong is typically quite an expensive product which may deter some from purchasing it.
      However, we prioritize quality in our biltong - we only use the highest-quality, organic, grass-fed and finished beef from Australia's best free-range farms, which is some of the best quality meat in the world. We also add no sugars or preservatives to our biltong, so there's no BS ingredients - just beef, vinegar and spices.
      There's also the added convenience of having the biltong pre-packaged and not having to make it yourself - cause time equals money 😉
      Regardless, I appreciate you reaching out and voicing your opinion and I understand where you're coming from. We simply believe that the juice is worth the squeeze when it comes to getting high quality biltong.
