There is nothing weird or crazy about screaming for joy that you just completed your 58th 14er! Your excitement would be contagious. You deprived those four people of celebrating with you.
Longs was my first climb at age 50. As someone who doesn’t like heights, the narrows were unnerving, but not difficult. The hardest part of the day was the hike back down to the trailhead after exiting the keyhole..
Chockstone to narrows is hardest couple of moves. Most dangerous is the trough where there’s still loose rock danger and plenty of noobs. I was a noob too but taught proper care as a kid in the Mtns in early 90s. Most just show up straight from another state and the rei store it seems like. Here’s the basic rules in a place like the trough: 1)obviously be very careful not to kick a rock. 2) if you do, yell ROCK!!! immediately and loudly.3) if it stops falling yell CLEAR. 4) in a group it’s best to stay close together so a rock isn’t traveling far enough to build momentum on your buddy. 5) ideally wait for others/other groups to get out of the fall line before descending if danger is high. Thanks and don’t hate me for sharing. (Have climbed it 3 times and done the grand slam at age 16)
My older brother, his friend and I hiked up Long's Peak about 1972. We did the Boulder Field and the Cables. We traversed the cables with no problem. MY freak out moment was on descent. I didn't like the narrows but at one point in my descent I went up without any clear direction. I came to a dead halt. NO possibility to go further. I was unsure of my ability to back down. A flash of panic hit me like never before. I eventually just eased myself down from where I came and was "back on track". In my opinion, it's always easier to go up than it is to go down. It's the same as life - climbing the corporate ladder is not hard; it's getting knocked out and down as others overtake you.
Fun to watch. Thanks. Can't believe I did this hike either as a camper or worker bee in 1969 or 1970 while at Camp St. Malo. I remember being afraid of those narrows, but our leaders--probably 20-year-old college kids!--seemed to know what they were doing. So, with peer pressure as motivation, we all just went along. On another trip, Camp St. Malo set a record for most people in a single ascent...I guess more than 100 little kids up through a drizzling rain on the old cable route. The cable was much easier than the Keyhole, and it's a good thing they finally took the cables away. I have not attempted Longs again, but after a few attempts foiled by weather I did get to the top of Mt. Lady Washington on a v-e-r-y windy day. Literally had to make wind adjustments to leap from one rock to the next. Great views of Longs from the Lady! The view from Mt. Meeker is good too, as I recall. That used to be an easy walk up a snowfield/culoir that might vanish sooner than it used to before climate change. No one who views this should think most days are that nice. Apocalyptic lightning happens FAST up there. Snow in August? Believe it. Congrats on doing all 58.
I just got turned back at the keyhole and thought of you. Sweat heavily, Sat around waiting for sunrise, then the winds came in, and I had zero extra layers. Heading back better prepared soon

Your chanel is the only one im subscribed to on TH-cam bc you do a great job on informing people on just most everything on these hikes, and seem super down to earth. Keep killing it man.

Nostalgia. I did the keyhole route a couple of times. Once in summer we left at 6 AM and passed 110 people and we’re passed by one runner. my father did it in storm around 1920. A favorite of mine was Pagoda -Longs-Meeker…. A full day but not too long. Have to be good at route Finding. It is not too bad. If it goes without ropes you’re in the right place. Also did the north face in winter but never got around to the diamond. Thanks for the video
Congrats on 58! I attempted Longs 30 years ago but had jello for legs and turned around at the keyhole. Still a very memorable hike. My brother-in-law did summit. I've since done Evans by car and Pikes Peak by cog railroad :)
Longs is one of my favorite 14ers, I’ve been up six times over the years-1988, 1989, 2000, 2010, 2017, 2018. Meeker and Pagoda are also nice 13ers, with wonderful views of Longs. Well done with the video!
I learned the Longs lesson the hard way also. It's the peak that taught me to always bring way more clothing than you need, bc you never know. That mountain can be cranky.
I also failed my first Longs attempt in 2007 - woke up to heavy rain in Estes Park and did not even attempt. But I came back and summitted it 3 times - 2009, 2010, 2011. What an awesome peak and a testament to God's amazing creative power!
Great job man!!! I too just finished all the CO 14er's in September this year. My last was Windom Peak as the last of the 4 that I summitted at the Chicago Basin. I actually discovered your channel when I was doing research on climbing Capital Peak. You do a great job with route descriptions. This information is vital to those who are either not experienced with dangerous routes or someone that just needs more information about the route itself. You do a great service to the general public (whether you realize it or not). Again, congrats on your accomplishment! This flatlander from Ohio attempted Long's in 1986, made it to Keyhole. The exposure was too much and turned around, Loved your video, more informative than most.
How was it? I did Pikes Peak a few months back and did some camping up there. Had a great time but now im looking for something a bit technical but not super dangerous.
Definitely recommend doing Long’s under warm, dry conditions, starting very early, and as always, avoiding weekends if possible. This is even more important on Long’s due to The Trough, where rocks can get kicked down on you. Good idea to wear a helmet for this section. Congrats on completing them!!
I wore a helmet from the Keyhole to the summit and back. Too many opportunities to slip. Even if there is no drop, a slip on jagged rocks, ledges, or slopes can result in a head injury. Many opportunities for falling rocks.

Stumbled on your channel today and I'll be back--I like your videos. 58 will be a lifetime thing for me (sitting at 11). On our first 14er had a couple buddies stop at the Keyhole while a couple of us summitted 15 years ago. 2 ya we went back up and all summitted together via Keplinger's. A dirty slog I recommend with a Meeker option. Have fun as you move forward, see you on a summit sometime.

Have done like 35 of the Colorado 14ers, all the easy ones, did do Kit Carson and El Diente rated at class 3 just no where near being in your league. There are 14ers in California you should venture over there you would do well there most are too difficult for me. The Mountains are beautiful there also. The east and west side really differ in wind conditions. When I passed through the Keyhole it was like entering a portal to a different realm. The wind nearly blew me over. Great hike, but demanding on various levels.
Yeah, those notches (on Longs or otherwise) are usually wind tunnels but once you get away from them the winds can die down. That other side usually catches people by surprise though.

I will echo your comments regarding Longs being a poor choice for first fourteener. While we summited and lived to tell about it, we were woefully unprepared for the task. As a runner, I was in good shape but underestimated impact of the length of the hike and altitude gain and had no idea of the extent of real climbing above the keyhole. It's definitely not a walk-up. At that time, there was a campground available at Jim's Grove just below timberline which was a much better option than the Boulderfield which is high and exposed to the elements. Back in the 80's, the Trough commonly kept its snow most if not all of the summer and prudence suggested carrying an ice axe. I've noticed on just about every video I've seen in the last decade or more that the trough is generally snow free much earlier in the year.
Mark B hey mark, thanks for sharing your story and I believe a huge part of hiking and mountaineering is learning from those mistakes that in retrospect are very stupid or ill informed. In my mind any time you venture into the mountains you are learning something and gaining some kind of lesson for future outings. Glad it all worked out for you though!
It is worth mentioning that you have to have a permit to camp in the boulder field. We did Long's the last weekend of August and camped in the boulder field.
You should climb the Spearhead in Rocky Mountain National Park, it was that spire on the edge of the ridge extending into the valley below you while doing the technical part. I’ve climbed it and its a really cool class 3 with and amazing summit
I love your videos!! Congrats, you should be proud!! You show caution and are not showing off like some assclowns that have climbing channels. I have only done two 14ers in California. I'm retired and going to start my 14er assaults in June 2020. Off to Nepal in October 2020 for Three Passes Trek to Everest Base Camp via Kala Patthar.

Thanks man - not sure yet, felt like I conquered the vast majority of the route and don't have a huge need to go back. However, if I decide to work on the centennials I will have to go back for Meeker and may want to tag Longs again if the weather is good so would have to finish the rest of the Loft in that case.
If you live around Boulder or anywhere in the northern Denver metro area, this mountain just towers over the skyline, begging you to come climb it, hence why it's a complete zoo on weekends in the late summer. Try going mid-week and late in the fall to avoid lines in these areas he's describing.
Cap is significantly harder than Longs - to be honest, I don't think its even close. Longs is an easy (albeit long for some) day hike where Longs is nearly impossible to do in a day and has much more technical terrain.
Gonna be climbing this one later this month on May 30th as my first 14er. Preparing for it to be with lots of snow and ice since it’s still slightly early. Any tips you’d recommend for someone preparing? Especially with regards to clothing and gear.

I'm climbing this one via the same route in a week! I'm kinda nervous about the exposure on the ledges section and the narrows. What are your thoughts and opinions about those sections?
I don't mean to answer by not answering - but its VERY hard for me to compare my experience to others. I try to show everything in the video as clearly as I can so hopefully that helps out a bit. In general, this route isn't super exposed, but that's sort of relative based on your experience and comfort with exposure. Best of luck!
I have to politely disagree. I just did Longs and camped two nights at the Boulderfield. My base weight is extremely low so I’m not lugging an extreme amount 5.5 miles to camp. Not to mention, the summit hike was a million times easier starting from and ending at the Boulderfield. No fear of weather and I had a nice sleeping bag to warm up in immediately. 10/10 recommend staying at the Boulderfield. For nothing other than the experience, but absolutely for the convenience and safety.
How was the descent? I was up in the tundra in February trying to go to chasm lake, and I was crossing a snow coulier and I ended up falling 500 feet down the chasm and hurt my tailbone, I had to climb back up the loose rock, so I'm a little worried about how it is getting down from longs.
As far as I know we have very small recently reintroduced wolf populations in Colorado (mainly northern Colorado). What you saw was probably fox or coyote which I have seen plenty of while hiking across the state.

I failed my first attempt on Longs. I couldn’t sleep at camp. I climbed it this year as my 19th 14er!

You should climb the Spearhead in Rocky Mountain National Park, it was that spire on the edge of the ridge extending into the valley below you while doing the technical part. I’ve climbed it and its a really cool class 3 with and amazing summit

Thanks man - not sure yet, felt like I conquered the vast majority of the route and don't have a huge need to go back. However, if I decide to work on the centennials I will have to go back for Meeker and may want to tag Longs again if the weather is good so would have to finish the rest of the Loft in that case.

If you live around Boulder or anywhere in the northern Denver metro area, this mountain just towers over the skyline, begging you to come climb it, hence why it's a complete zoo on weekends in the late summer. Try going mid-week and late in the fall to avoid lines in these areas he's describing.

Congrats man!!! How would you compare the difficulty of hiking Long's compared to Capital peak?
Cap is significantly harder than Longs - to be honest, I don't think its even close. Longs is an easy (albeit long for some) day hike where Longs is nearly impossible to do in a day and has much more technical terrain.
what is the difficulty of downclimb vs the up, for the trickier sections?
Gonna be climbing this one later this month on May 30th as my first 14er. Preparing for it to be with lots of snow and ice since it’s still slightly early. Any tips you’d recommend for someone preparing? Especially with regards to clothing and gear.

I'm climbing this one via the same route in a week! I'm kinda nervous about the exposure on the ledges section and the narrows. What are your thoughts and opinions about those sections?
I don't mean to answer by not answering - but its VERY hard for me to compare my experience to others. I try to show everything in the video as clearly as I can so hopefully that helps out a bit. In general, this route isn't super exposed, but that's sort of relative based on your experience and comfort with exposure. Best of luck!
I have to politely disagree. I just did Longs and camped two nights at the Boulderfield. My base weight is extremely low so I’m not lugging an extreme amount 5.5 miles to camp. Not to mention, the summit hike was a million times easier starting from and ending at the Boulderfield. No fear of weather and I had a nice sleeping bag to warm up in immediately. 10/10 recommend staying at the Boulderfield. For nothing other than the experience, but absolutely for the convenience and safety.
How was the descent? I was up in the tundra in February trying to go to chasm lake, and I was crossing a snow coulier and I ended up falling 500 feet down the chasm and hurt my tailbone, I had to climb back up the loose rock, so I'm a little worried about how it is getting down from longs.

Have you ever seen wolves here? I hiked Grey's last year, and I swear I saw a red wolf followed by howls from the rest of the pack.
As far as I know we have very small recently reintroduced wolf populations in Colorado (mainly northern Colorado). What you saw was probably fox or coyote which I have seen plenty of while hiking across the state.
I'd like to see video of the way down...that part is more concerning to me than the way up!
