You’re one of the only reaction channels that already understood so early that Sobel made for a much better training officer/leader than a combat officer. Lots of people just don’t like him outright but you understood his contribution in forging Easy Company into a tight well oiled fighting unit.

To a point you are correct, however he does take it too far, it was the Winters and the NCOs that took it upon themselves to overcome him.

The Drill Sargent's main goal is to form a fighting soldier to defeat the enemy. They sometimes have to be "the enemy" to form that bond.

On Veteran’s Day of all days, this feels like a true “Thank you for your service.” Your insight, intuition and respect of the circumstances of the show and how it relates to real life is incredible and we veterans appreciate it. Proof to all the incoming military know-it-alls that will fill up this comment section you don’t have to serve in the military to understand and appreciate the service and sacrifice. Respect, bro! Somewhat interesting fact - the weather report that delayed the jump came from a weather station at Black Sod Bay, which is at a lighthouse at the bottom of the Belmullet peninsula in Mayo, west coast of Ireland. That is where my family are from. That one report likely shaped history.

•I had the honor to interviewing WWII vets from my church. Both of them are now with God. This series is also my family's Memorial Day tradition.
•Yep, the true story of E Company, 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, US Army.
•It comes from the St. Crispin's Day Speech from Shakespeare's Henry V. "But we in it shall be remembered. We few, we happy few, we band of brothers, for he today who sheds his blood with me shall be my brother."
•Well some of the same people who worked on Saving Private Ryan worked on this.
•Currahee is a corruption of a Cherokee word, meaning, "We stand alone." It's the regimental motto and the name of the small mountain they have to hike up in their training. 3 miles up, 3 miles down.
•Weighs as much as they do and then some. Also, people should never run with their phones.
•The men of Easy acknowledged that Sobel's training, while rough, is what got them to the end of the war.
•Note that those other three men did not have to run Currahee; they did it because they're a band of brothers.
    •The Army.
•Paratroopers were still relatively new to warfare.
•To refuse an order is called insubordination, which is one of the three worst crimes a soldier can commit, next to mutiny and desertion.
    •He had respect?
•The award for best plane goes to the P-51 Mustang, so USA! USA! USA!
•The one that goes ding is the M1 Garand and yes, it is fun to hear. My brother and I both have one, which we use for hog hunting.
    •Unrelated to the prank.
•I recently had a guy berate me in the comment section of another reviewer of this series. He said that Sobel, being more interested in his own interests than his men's, is a terrible trainer. Sobel is a decent/effective trainer, but a terrible combat commander.
    •$10,000 in 1944 = $465,724 today
•And off they go to liberate Europe.

I always love movies and series that do total immersion, especially when most of the scenes are shot on location and it's like a cameraman went back in time and just followed people in day to day life. Like there's no stylized fantasy shots or even a direct narrative with a lot of plot devices.

YES! Oh, boy, are you in for a ride. This has got to be one of the best series ever made, and I think it's great you're getting into it. And yes, this is a dramatization of what actually happened. Easy Company, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, was (I believe) the most decorated American unit in the European theater of operations, which was why Ambrose, the author of the book that this series was based on, chose to write about them.
Trivia: Four out of five volunteers for the paratroopers either weren't accepted into training or were washed out during training. Those who did become paratroopers were thus the cream of the crop.
Trivia: Private Ryan (from the movie) was from the 101st Airborne, as were the guys with him to protect the bridge at Ramelle. Gives a whole new meaning to his reluctance to leave his brothers, I'm sure.
1:09 USD 100 in 1942 is roughly equivalent to USD 1,700 today.
5:20 The kind of head games Sobel played are similar to the head games trainers of elite military units today play on their trainees. it's done because the results pay off, for those who do pass.
10:30 In reality, Sobel had Winters up for court martial twice. The second time around was when the higher ups decided that enough was enough.
13:40 If a paratrooper carried all of their equipment on their body (around 40 - 55 kgs., depending on their function - e.g. infantryman, radioman, demolitions), they would likely have broken their legs when they landed. This was why most of their equipment was carried in leg bags (if you played the original Call of Duty, you'll know what this is, from the first actual mission in that game) that were connected to the paratrooper with rope. This will come into play in the next episode.
Great reaction! I'm sure you won't find it difficult to watch the entire series.

When I trained 15k was our training weight. We carried an average of 36k in reality. I went thru US Airborne training at Ft. Benning Georgia (where Camp McCall still is) with the 101st Airborne, a little more than 20 years after the end of WWII. The Jump school training was very different, physical yes but mostly technical, about three weeks in length. For me, the much tougher Infantry training came later.

If sobel had the situational awareness and a solid grasp of military tactics his men would have followed him into hell. But he didn't so they won't: P.S
I believe this is the best portrayal of what our boys faced that I've seen on film. What it can't do is make you understand the fear. Showing someone a picture of hell and able to feel the heat against your face are very different.

You're right, the show is exceptional. It's better than a documentary, IMO. While it's being performed by actors, _the men we are seeing interviewed are the very men being portrayed on the screen._ We are being taken back in time.
Some might point out that it's not 100% accurate. And yet, even if the events happened yesterday, we wouldn't have 100% accuracy, as everyone's perceptions are different. But this may be as close as we're going to get portrayed on screen. These are the experiences of these men, as they experienced it and remember it.

Very good commentary. I am looking forward to you watching the rest of the series. Yes the story follows one company from the start of the war, to the end. The men at the start of the show are the real surviving members of the company at the time of filming. Also a few side notes, the training was so tough that only 10% of the men who volunteer for paratrooper trainer actually made to become paratroopers (to get the jump wings that they were all so proud of).
Regular army pay for the time was 50 dollars a month paratroopers got paid 100 per month. (it was literally called blood money, because the army estimated that 90% of paratroopers would be killed) and yet these men volunteer anyway.
All who served deserve to be honored. These men and others like them above all. I look forward to your reactions to the rest of the series.

The title to the series comes from Shakespeare, a famous monologue called the Saint Crispin Day Speech from Henry V. The whole thing is very long, but the except that has the line is:
"And Crispin Crispian shall ne'er go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be rememberèd-
    We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;

Great time to start this, at Remembrance Day (Veterans Day in the USA). I don't know, but you might have missed recognizing Simon Pegg who appeared a couple of times in this episode next to Sobel. Plus there are a few more Brits in main roles in this, especially Damian Lewis/Winters and others that I wouldn't want to spoil yet. Damian Lewis' American accent is so good that you would forget that he's from London. Donnie Wahlberg is also outstanding in this as Sergeant Lipton. I watched a TON of television growing up through the 70s and 80s, but this is the best television I have ever seen. It's like 10 'Saving Private Ryans' but even better.

History becomes more interesting with age. As we get older our experiences give us perspective. At 45 I'm looking back to the 70's and 80's and the world is so different in some ways, and very much the same in other ways. And that perspective allows a person to appreciate the world through time. History then means more, because you can gain from that information and apply it to the future.

So glad you're watching this series. By the end of it will change or build your outlook on life for the better I swear it's that profound. Also once you're done you have to watch the 2nd series The Pacific.

Rendering a salute in the US Military requires your thumb along side the edge of your hand (not tucked into the palm), raise your hand to edge of your eyebrow, slightly tilted down, elbow out close to a right angle from your body. Anything else and you’ll get smoked. Saluting conveys the message that “I am armed.” Served for 12 years as an infantryman in the Army. Used to carry a 40mm grenade launcher mounted underneath a rifle. Loved that rifle more than my ex-wife.

Fun fact since you mentioned COD Big Red One, several actors from Band of Brothers voice characters in that game.

Great show, and I can already see the respect and reverence you have for it - it's definitely well deserved. Think I'll have to jump on patreon for this one!
In terms of Sobel, there's a famous warrior motto (that Leonidas says to his son in 300): "The more you sweat in training, the less you'll bleed in battle". Sobel was an exceptional trainer, he definitely sweated these men. In the BoB book, it talks about how when Easy company went on to the next training camp, they were actually fitter than the instructors.
The Major is also an excellent leader - he punishes the rebellion to restore disclipline (but in a way that doesn't compromise their combat effectiveness) and also retasks Sobel to take advantage of his strengths. Hats off to the man.
For airpower - A Luffwaffe general was asked by Goering what he needed to win the Battle of Britain, and he replied "A squadron of Spitfires" which didn't go down well at all. Of course, the general actually said that just because he was annoyed at what he saw as bad management :D. As usual, in the real world which plane (or any equipment) was "better" depended greatly on your point of view.
The 1940s style definitely suits you, btw!

Spitfire was best early in the war, but I think the P-51 topped it when it came out

Citizen soldiers bond is just so much more intense than professional career soldiery. They were there for a greater altruistic reason more than professionals as the money isn't there. All they had were each other, and defending their families.

The shaved Mohawks were the Filthy Thirteen. I can't believe I missed this. That division is legendary. Led by Jake "McNasty" McNiece, never given the recognition because he was just simply too badass to follow orders and just wanted to fuck shit up.

    Altered Carbon (Series)
    Constantine (Keanu Reeves)
League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (Sean Connery)
Keep doing what you're doing! Almost 25K!!

They are running up Mount Currahee. "Currahee" is a native word which allegedly means, "We stand alone together." It's probably BS, but it makes a good motivator for people who didn't get out of high school.

Paratroopers are a special breed they are the double volunteers..... Volunteer to serve, volunteer to jump.
Our job is to exit a perfectly fine aircraft behind enemy lines with nothing but the gear that we can carry with us, Then disrupt and destroy and survive long enough to fight our way back to our lines or wait for the ground advance to reach us As we defend isolated key terrain. HOOAH.
