Star notes don’t have the same serial number of the bills they replaced. They were printed first, and then when error notes were found they would pull that sheet and replace it with a sheet of star notes. Serial numbers were sequential, and the star is there to show why that serial number isn’t sequential with the rest of the notes. As of 2024, serial numbers are no longer required to be sequential, making star notes pointless and they will no longer make them.
