Screw this... I hoped a video would help me figure out how to best this stage but I think it has made it worse. So basically buy all the upgrades is what I'm getting?
This is Nightmare level. If you have trouble beating it, I presume you're on Normal, then you don't need as many upgrades. Having main cannon pimped out, a laser and a shield or two certainly helps. That being said, this stage sucks for how few stars there are. You can see him dumping 650 in the beginning only to get
Play level 2 until an opponent drops a card. Card drops are uncommon and most likely random. If you survive the round with the card in possession you will unlock the bonus stage. For proceeding stages, I'm assuming that you unlock them using the same method, just on later levels.

I don't think you need all the upgrade, i almost complete this stage with very low level weapons and without the secondary shield.

its also twice as expensive so
