Just amazing! i love the sound of a Doumbek, wish to play it someday. The sync was also awesome..both of you played it beautiful! keep putting up more videos!!
Hi Bluntwrap4! It's a variation on the maksum. Real common rhythm throughout the mideast so they may call it other things in other places. This particular variation runs over 4 cycles of the maksum with the variation in the 3rd and 4th repetitions. It's a playful riff some Turkish players are doing.
As someone who plays this instrument, I can tell you that a) the sound DEFINITELY cuts through b) the lap-holding is pretty damn comfortable c) this drum is much easier on the palms than the djembe. (though it'll still murder your forearms in the beginning...especially when using the technique that these women are using in the video. :)
Very nice ladies. I am heading to th store before my acoustic gig tonight to see if I can pick one of these up. I play djembe and sing in the band right now but think the doumbek might be a better fit? They sound like they cut a little better and I can hold it on my lap. If they get as much volume as it appears wih fingers playing, then it will save my hands big time on the djembe. My hands swell after playing djembe for 3-4 hours...
Hi Pelea! Raquy has a great line of instructional books, the Dumbek Fever series, and drums available at her site or raquydrumstore(dot) com . She also has regular retreats in upstate NY and Turkey. Happy Drumming!
Beautiful performance! Also, I would love to have a darbuka like the one that the girl with lighter skin is playing. I think it's made of mirror and I appreciate it if somebody could tell me where to buy one from.
Thank you Thank you Thank you! Peace Love Gratitude for your beautiful music!
Mesmerizing, hypnotic, and totally badass. I enjoy watching their nonverbal interactions almost as much as the music. Both convey such sheer joy.

Fine performance. Ignore the trolls. I like Natalia's subtle sense of self: it's the music more than the performer, right? Cheers.
