Today I retrace my musical roots to revisit the first bass solo I ever learned to play, the awesome groove it bookends, and the unsung bassist that became a part of my musical language. The group is Maze (Featuring Frankie Beverly) with the unsung Robin Duhe on bass!

Thank you so much for shining a spotlight on Robin Duhe plus Maze featuring Frankie Beverly. I used to think of Maze as the Black Grateful Dead because they could sell out a venue with or without a current release.

    Another great video!
Please check out the 70’s song called , Glide, by the group Pleasure. There is a break down/bass solo where the first Ghost Note on an electric bass is recorded. Can you please demonstrate how that is done, because I have yet to see ANY TH-camr truly demonstrate the bass Ghost Note. Prince did songs like that later on Work, 777-9311 but never performed them live. Thanks a lot!👍🏿

Great review again! I’m from the Bay Area and there was a lot of killer bass going on in the 70s. One of my favorite Maze bass lines is Too many games. Talk about funky! Check that one out!

Solid selection Paul and thanks for sharing. This makes me reminisce of a concert that I saw back in the day. Anita Baker opened for Maze and she and her group were phenomenal . Her bass player for this concert was Bobby Watson from Rufus. Then Maze featuring Frankie Beverly came on and amazed the audience. Robin Duhe was superb and the whole group was so damn tight.I can still hear and feel the music from that night.
    Priceless!!!

The concert Maze did in New Orleans that was filmed is a complete classic. The guitar player in dressed in red was really funky and the bass player had a cool looking p bass. God bless you Paul for putting this excellent channel out there . By the way there is a track on this TH-cam called Norman Connors by the Mike Edmonds Bassic Requirement . It was released on vinyl and copies did get to Japan and Canada . It’s my tribute to that whole disco funk era

It is a joy to watch your channel and how well you break down some of the most prominent bass lines ever created. The are as fresh today as the day they were born by the talented fingers playing them. Surely, I am from that generation to have had every one of those records and I started playing bass in the early to mid seventies because of these guys and yes, including Robin Duhe! I had the great fortune to play a lot of Maze music during the 80's & 90's. I'd been a Maze enthusiast since the late 70's, and was knocked out by bassist Robin Duhe's powerful & infectious pocket, & his righteous tones & patterns. Its really great that the spotlight has finally been turned on this vastly underrated bassist. If you are new to the bass, or have been around awhile but don't know about Maze, you owe it to yourself to check Robin Duhe. My favorite tracks: Before I Let Go, Runnin' Away, Southern Girl, The Look in Your Eyes, Feel that Your Feelin', & Workin' Together.

Great video and analysis as usual Maestro. My high school garage band played several FB and Maze tunes back in the day. I'm a rhythm guitar guy but ironically, it was our bass player that introduced us to Maze. We used to open up a few sets with "You" which was fine with me because I got to kick things off with that 2 chord intro.

Can you do a video on bassist Ralphe Armstrong most famous for his bass playing with Jean Luc Ponty, although he played with Miles Davis and countless others? I love his rounded bubbly sound on the low end tip, sound like a p-bass but it appears that he plays mainly jazz configured electric bass guitars, so it’s definitely in the technique! When you hear Ralph you automatically are drawn to the bass groove and man can that cat groove. He adds a lot of Melodic notes in his phrases and his style reminds me of Bernard Edwards in many ways.
