Typically if the alternator is going to go bad, at least on my 2010 BB Vision with a Cummins 6.7, I have a volt gauge on the dash, and the digital DIC (Driver Info Center) reads the Amps that the alternator is putting out. So if volts is less than 13 and the amps is reading negative, and I also had a battery light come on on the dash too that all let me know that the alternator went bad and told you below how I replaced to save big money. Alternators are easy, you can do that yourself believe it or not. BUT... if you just replaced all your batteries and the voltage is good, then you very well might have a bad starter. Even if you did get it to start with a strong jump, a bad starter can be made to work a time or two or 3 more times with some extra voltage to overcome the bad tolerances in the starter. Also, sometimes, a light firm tapping on the starter to knock some brush dust out of the way, will revive the starter for a few more starts but those are short lived trial methods just to get you to a shop or home to diagnose further and replace the starter. Boy, I bet that's not going to be cheap either. If you have a good starter/alternator rebuilder shop in your town, you might save some big money by having yours rebuilt instead of buying a reman'ed one. Also look at new. I find sometimes these days, the new over reman cost isn't much different and even rebuilts still have worn parts in them, like the windings and armature. If they're within spec, they'll put in new bearings and brushes and call it good and send it on out, then in a year the armature is out of spec and it quits, where as if you bought new, it would have lasted 10 or 15 years like this one did. That goes for both starter and alternators.

Little things are going to happen in any vehicle that has been parked for 3 years. Probably should have started it a couple times a month or driven it around the house to get the brakes, oil, grease and coolant moving around. You’ll get it. Life has a way of challenging us all. Hope you have a wonderful Holiday Season and a great New Year!

Starting a parked vehicle a couple of times a month is a very bad idea, the engine oil will get moist from condensation and rust (cylinder walls, camshaft etc) can damage the engine. If you start it drive it untill hot. If it can't be driven leave it alone.

So was it just weak batteries why it wouldn't start? Get them things on 2 amp trickle charge now that you're home and see if you can't revive them. They shouldn't have gone weak after a drive and then shutting it off. I think I'd check the alternator too to make sure it's putting out a proper charge before any long trips. My 2010 BB Vision had a $1200 Leece Neville 270 amp alternator on it and it went bad. Noway I was spending $1200 on an alternator. I found a 200 amp alternator that was a bit smaller but fit the bracket, since the bracket is designed for different alternators and not using the lift, I know 200amp is plenty. So I got that off of amazon for $159, bolted right on, same belt and all and never have had a problem since with that issue. These busses can be expensive, but sometimes you'll have to think outside the box and make things happen. So I saved over $1000 doing some research and going a different direction. Merry Christmas !!! I think I'll be binge watching all your videos this holiday weekend.

Great advice! Just bought new batteries and now the bus won’t start going to test the alternator now. Thanks for the advice, merry Christmas!

Glad to see your first trip was a success. Were the batteries just old or do you have an alternator issue that the batteries were not charging anyways those are very small issues. The radiator can be replaced. Batteries can be replaced. Will be watching for your next video safe travels, merry Christmas and a happy new year.
