    Good review.... Have a few points from my experience... I too really struggle with poor circulation (I'm in my 60's) and to be fair having tried every winter cycling boot over the last 10 years (I've been cycling now for 45 years) I could get my hands on... including Fizik (which I didn't find them very warm at all and they're pretty expensive too and not that robust - for full winter use) from Specialized 'Defrosters' to Scott 'Heaters' and everything in between... The best by far (for me) are the NorthWave Celsius XC Artic GTC Goretex... Just brilliant. Into my second season with them now and still going great (Ive averaged just over 200 miles a week for 2023 so far) I purchased the Gore Wear Endura waterproof pants (on offer at £139 instead of the very expensive £199 until 17th Dec) a couple of weeks ago... At just under £200 I don't believe they're worth it... They're ok, fit is not great (for me - they tend to 'ride up' after a while) and they are very noisy, but at £139 they're pretty decent to have for great waterproof protection and they do fold up nice and small for easy storage....
    Looking forward to your review for more affordable winter kit rather than the very expensive high end stuff. Cheers.

      so you would highly recommend those Northwave ones you’ve mentioned? i’m really having a hard time deciding which winter boots i want to buy. i live in prague where we get fairly cold winters.

    I have the Castelli Perfetto Ros 2 Convertible Jacket It has zip off sleeve. Managed to get it for £56 on sale from Wiggle. You dont realise how warm it is until you undo the zips and instantly feel the windchill. Love it.
    With trousers I dont like tights so wear Fox MTB waterproofs, they are excellent.

      I have some disposable foot warmers - just stick them to the underside of your socks and you are good to go for about 8 hours !

    I have the Shimano MW7’s for mtb when running spd’s and fortunate enough to also have the Fizik Artica GTX Tempo for road, running Wahoo speedplays. Both are superb, right down to 0C on the road I have toasty feet with the Fizik’s (don’t ride road when it’s colder than that). The ‘koala’ fur is super toasty, like being cuddled by a recently fluffed up Koala, only lighter for the pedalling. I have medium width feet and find both at 44 fit similar to each other and is my normal sizing for cycling, walking and casual footwear.

    @VictorElGreco ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I can only speak about the older, zippered Fizik Artica boots: very good, but please beware that their sizing runs small and narrow. You may want to order one full size up or, better yet, try some on if you can.

    From your list I own the Castelli jacket. It’s so unbelievably good I bought a second one! I’ve never felt that comfortable and that dry and that protected before. It’s so well designed it could be opened during uphill of body temperature rises leaving the inner zipper up. Amazing.

      Yes, I have pretty much the same one - the Alpha ROS 2. I think David's one the Dolphio? just looks like it has a thicker/warmer second layer than the Alpha ROS 2.

    • @dakalla
      @dakalla ปีที่แล้ว

      I have the last years model of that jacket, called Alpha ROS 2, bought directly from castelli for 139€ on sale. Seems very identical with a little different inner insulation. Nice jacket, but has some small downsides too: The armpits are quite tight and i am not wide at my breast at all. The neck is very wide, usually the neck is too narrow for me on other jackets. Good for a neck warmer, bad if you want to use it without. The sides of the jacket have no additional insulation like the front, back or the arms. So in cold temperatures around or below 0°, you can definitely feel the cold on the sides. I don't get why they designed it like this and am surprised that the new model still has the same design with only one layer of gore infium on the side.

    I have the gravel version of that jacket and it´s a OVEN! I only wear it at home because unless you live in a sub zero place you will overheat and ride it unzipped all the way back home. Those gloves are magically good though (even in warm spring days).

  • @jannispohlmann
    @jannispohlmann ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Regarding the Castelli Perfetto gloves: those work ok at a few degrees above zero, but around and below zero, I've tried a number of gloves. The only ones that kept my hands warm for more than an hour then were the Castelli Estremo winter gloves. Those work well even at -5C.

    • @jannispohlmann
      @jannispohlmann ปีที่แล้ว

      And that's with inner liner gloves.

    Not sure if you can get it in the UK, but NanoTips liquid painted onto the finger tips of your gloves might help them work with iPhone. I've had surprisingly good luck with that product! The only downside is that with bulky gloves, it can be difficult to tap small areas of the screen accurately.

    Still using my 6 year old Castelli Esspresso jacket, with a thermal base layer good down to -5. Think it looks better than the new ROS styling too. Have yet to find a glove which keeps my hands warm below 0 deg. Trying out some Decathlon waterproof & Windproof over gloves this winter over endura pro sl thermal gloves.

    I don't understand the wahoo thing if you're outside in all weathers & I can't see the point in gloves if they are not water proof .I use Endura MT 500 top & trousers ( really easy to get on & off with long zip ) 5 ten tail gortex boots .I'm still trying out waterproof gloves .

    I bought the Castelli Doppio off the back of this video. Have only worn it once with just a good quality synthetic winter base layer which was absolutely soaked at the end of the ride and felt very uncomfortable - 35KM, moderate pace and temperature c.5C. Jury is out so far and think I prefer the flexibility of layering but would welcome any advice or reassurances on the jacket.

    • @davidarthur
      @davidarthur  ปีที่แล้ว

      That sounds very different to my experience- how thick is the base layer? I’ve been quite thick base layers and been riding in temps down to a 2-4 degrees and not getting soaked

      @embles262 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the reply and good to know. It was a Rapha Pro Team winter base layer. - perhaps it was too much for the temperature and I needed a thinner layer. Will experiment!

    One thing to note about the Silca waterless wash is to not get it on your disc brakes. From Silca th-cam.com/video/A5C0JWhVB-Q/w-d-xo.html, it'll leave a hard coating.

  • @jannispohlmann
    @jannispohlmann ปีที่แล้ว

    It's worth noting that the Fizik shoes are rather narrow and if you have slightly wider / flat / splay feet, they will inhibit blood circulation and lead to cold feet. I tried them last year and they didn't work well on my feet, so this year I'll try other manufacturers.

    • @KoenMiseur
      @KoenMiseur ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I recommend Northwave wintershoes, I have very wide feet (I use Lake CX201 normally) and their wintershoes fit me fairly well, would recommend to go half a size up though, also smart if you need to use thicker socks.

    • @jannispohlmann
      @jannispohlmann ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KoenMiseurThanks! I'll order a couple sizes from NW and will see if they fit. I have Lake and SDI here for trying on. The Lakes are wide but a bit bulky and too short (already one size up). The SDIs are similarly narrow to the Fizik, so not a good idea.

    0:47 That's seems like a silly low gaiter, if you ride in deep puddle and deep snow, walk in deep snow, this is way too low.
    Also as I don't use clipless I would need a flat shoes. I see they have Terra Nanuq GTX Flat now. Gaiter and BOA, but they have a zipper on the side, I'm not a fan of coil zippers as they are fragile. I rather have adjustable gaiter with Velcro strap.
    Toe box looks wider on those than most shoes.

    Hi David, great video very informative. I'd like your opinion on the sizi g of the Fizik winter boots. I usually wear a size 42 in standard cycling shoes but I've heard that Fizik come up small and are particularly narrow, plus I'd usually wear slightly thicker winter socks. I'd really appreciate your thoughts on this please.

      I tend to not use my iPhone during the ride, if it’s very wet I have dry pouch for it anyway which isn’t compatible clearly! Only touch screen is generally the Garmin and even then it’s only if it’s wet and I’ve not locked the screen that I have issues. Though I generally use fingerless gloves unless it’s well below zero as well I run hot.

    How is walking in those Fizik shoes? I have a pair of winter shoes that I find absolutely terrifying whenever I need to get off the bike. The grip on ice is absolutely non-existent! Even my summer shoes have better ice grip. And yes, it's not uncommon for me to hop off the bike, only to realize that I have been riding on smooth ice.

    Your so WRONG about the normal ass savers, I even have them on my summerbikes, you never know if you come by a street that is a bit wet and at least your ass and back stay dry and it doesn't look like you shat yourself, and they really do that, heck I've seen the difference between me and my friends who don't use ass savers.
    Are full mudguards better, yes of course, I have them on my winterbike, but ass savers do help. This ass saver wing 2 is dumb though, it doesn't give much more protection (I have tried one) than normal ass savers and it's also a lot worse than mudguards, so what's even the point?
