- An overview of Spell Law, across various editions - the Rolemaster magic system that can be incorporated into virtually any role-playing game.
Here, I go into what it does, from learning spells, to casting them, to attacking with them, to some notes on how to use Spell Law with other game systems.

Thanks for bringing some much needed attention and insight to RM's Spell Law. RM is a great joy for me to run, but I find that players generally struggle to grasp the procedures and rely upon me to guide them through anything much beyond rolling the dice and looking up the result.
Cheers!
I'm glad you found it useful 🙂 RM is an too-often overlooked game. It's a shame - there's a lot of solid work that has gone into it.
I'm really enjoying Hawkwind. Thanks for the share!!
Nothing wrong with a good slice of Hawkwind!
My God, you don't know an edition of RM you know all its editions? You are awesome. Love these in depth videos!
Hah - I'm that old 🤣
To be fair, I started with Rolemaster at RM2, but kept up the love from there. I once tried to return to RM2 (from RMSS). I thought, "what I'll do here is compile the options from the Companions I want to use, but it'll be a return to basics".
As it happens, when I fold in all of the RM1/2 options I like, it looks awfully like an unedited RMSS...
Anyway, that's anecdotal. Thank-you for your kind words!
As always, a fantastic overview and explanation of a classic system.
Thank-you 🙂
Loved this magic system. Wish this was in creative commons so more people would integrate it into their games.
We can hope. It may be we'll see more and more systems go that way.
This was excellent! Please do more Rolemaster.
Thank-you!
Great video! I’ll take all the RMU content you care to make!
I need to get an RMU review done. My RM review videos go up to RMFRP thus far.
Thank for your video and to talking about Rolemaster System :)
Thank-you!
Excellent retrospective on this one, had forgotten about it for a time. I think I had it as part of a boxed set in the early 80s. Unfortunately, my mother sent this one (along with more relics of the day that I want to think about) to dumpster oblivion. Salud! 🍻⚔
Thank-you!
Lot of memories returned while listening to this.
Good ones of adventure, I hope!
This overview is EXCELLENT!! Thank u for creating it. I will definitely refer to it in the future. 😊
Thank-you - I'm glad you found it useful 🙂
Great job!
I really miss my old Rolemaster and MERP sessions with the lads.
A video on Arms Law would be very well received as well. Maybe you already have one. Let me check.
Not specifically Arms Law, but my general RM videos dive into it a bit. Maybe I should cover all of the core books?
Great explanation. Thank you.
You're welcome!
Bravo zulu! Great content.
Thank-you!
Im really tempted to get a copy of the new rolemaster. Even if its just for nostalgia purpose.
It's not bad. Streamlined some of the more convoluted parts of RM.
I’m excited for this! 😃
I hope it lives up to your excitement!
Well done.
Thank-you
I was never super excited for the Rolemaster magic system, although I enjoyed the Rolemaster system in general, the spells never felt quite as 'special' as in Ad&d.
Saying that my group played a lot more Rolemaster than Ad&d, but I never played a magic using character, always a martial class, the combat system was very fun.
I need to do a supplemental on this... Each D&D spell is like a rules capsule, while RM spells do most of their work within the rules as a whole. That might make them seem less special, but it's certainly a more logical way to go.
We called it "Chartmaster". That said its such a fun game.
Chartmaster and Tableblemaster are fair. It's when folk try to make out that it's rules are more complex than D&D that I rankle!
@@WillyMuffinUK Totally agree on that. AD&D 1st edition was just as complex and actually less clear in my opinion at times. I think the only issue with Rolemaster was that it's pretty top heavy for the GM and if the players don't get the basic rules down, even more so. Still, I'll always be a fan of Rolemaster and MERP.
@@Acmegamer If someone had merged AD&D's organisation with Rolemaster's common systems...!
@@WillyMuffinUK Oh what a game we could have had! 😀
Alway like to see more Rolemaster content, there's very few of it out there for Rolemaster, even it's sister games like HARP & Spacemaster. I'm starting a Against the Darkmaster campaign soon and that's a more streamlines version of MERPS that separates the setting from Middle Earth and has a few Narrative mechanics.
It's unfortunate that the behemoth that is D&D puts a shadow over games such as Rolemaster. They just don't generate the same level of clicks.
Fortunately, not something that's so much on an issue around here, so I can afford to give games such as Rolemaster etc. some TLC.
@@WillyMuffinUK a shame but not completely unexpected, the TTRPGS hobby is still relatively small compared to others like Video Games and D&D being the biggest and has more cross over history than any other TTRPGS. Baldur's Gate 3 and Honor Amongst Thieves bringing more people into the D&D hobby doesn't help. Maybe one day we'll get a video game based on the Rolemaster rules, how would they work, I have no idea I'm not a programmer but still.
@@bigtastyben5119 I am a programmer. I've had a crack at chargen for RMSS, but it'd take someone with more time for data entry than me to get it anywhere near complete.
@@WillyMuffinUK I've seen on DTRPG something called Electronic Roleplaying Assistant for Rolemaster Classic, RMSS, RMU and VsD. That's probably what you were trying to achieve but I haven't actually used it. Might give the VsD Quick start ERA a whirl to see how it is because it's free.
@@bigtastyben5119 Sort of. I started it way before ERA was a thing, back when my primary language was C++. I've looked at ERA, but not hard enough to properly evaluate.
