Thanks for all the vids, they kept us educated and entertained whilst island hopping in Croatia. As novices on large boats, we did make a mistake trying to use this technique though. The wind was higher than in the video, and was not so easy. The rope will be easily ripped from yr hands if it is not long enough. Also, we failed to realise that the rope will snag really easily on fenders if fallen down. Would be cool to add these warnings to the video. Long Rope, no fenders! Not always obvious to the less experienced … 👍🍷🍷
Hi great comment and good suggestions. Stay tune to the channel we will be releasing a video shortly from this year’s deployment where i picked up the mooring buoy in 20 kn of wind single-handed Also marina docking and departure single handed . Lots of great content for novices 👍

You were so calm and cool, I can't believe it! Good job! In a podcast someone said it would be important to pull the buoy up and attach the boat to a more thick line which is "hidden" in the water, attached underneath to the buoy. Did you ever do that?
Hi Johannes Thank you for the question no I haven’t encountered that extra level of difficulty yet LOL but if that was the set up I would probably still approach it the same way from the system swim bladder you just don’t stand a chance of a successful mooring operating from the bow hanging over the side of the boat Be safe have fun and I ll see you out there
@@royalnavyyachtmaster Thank you for your answer and you are right, the approach stays the same and I will definitely try the way you explained and I will also try to look as cool as you do!
I don't think that is good advice. I've sailed in Croatia a few times and the mooring buoys have a solid steel rod going through them that connects the ring up top with the heavy line or chain holding the buoy. Strengthwise, I believe your mooring line will break way before that steel rood gives out. Additionally, these buoys are HEAVY. It is no easy feat to lift them out of the water. There is simply no need to do what that podcast suggested. What you can do, if you have a hard time catching the buoy, is throwing a line loop over it whose ends are cleated. This way, you can prevent drifting away from the buoy and pull it closer so that you can feed your mooring line through the ring on the top of the buoy. Great video! Not only because of the topic, but also because it shows how to manoeuvre a catamaran with engines only.
Nice Video. I'm pretty new in the sailing community, just 3 years, already got my skipper license and had two trips as a skipper. Now my importent question. I also know this technique and i got trained to it 2 or 3 times but, as it is always in training, like in your video we had no wind. In real live i had about 25 knots and 1,5 meter waves with an untrained crew and a buoy you could not pull out of the water. Can you please make another video in rough conditions, how to do this maneuver without stress. I guess it would not be that easy to walk this line to the bow if the wind you push you away from your position and you cant hold the boat in position just with your muscles. Dont get me wrong, thats a very nice video how to easily do this manouver in good conditions. Just would like to see, this in rough conditions, to learn from it! Regards Sascha
Hi Sasha thank you for your question that’s a very fair observation and the answer is would you really want to be stuck on a mooring buoy in 1.5 m waves and 25 kn of wind I think the answer is probably “no”. I know you know this but the safety of your crew and your boat is paramount and you cannot have an under trained crew put in situations where lines will have huge loads on them on an unstable platform -one slip and someone goes over the side and it’s a disaster….. Always exercise caution maybe use your own bow anchor instead but a game you have to be sure it has a really good hold and maintain an ankle watch as you know an anchor can slip and drag at any moment. All the best thanks for the subscription and comment be safe have fun out there 🙂
@@royalnavyyachtmaster Thank you for your really fast answer and your opinion. Anyway i think you would also agree that no wind and waves are not the only situations to take moooring buoys. Hi Bill thank you for the feedback- no I would not use the same technique in 20 kn of wind which is clearly where your thoughts are going it would not work and I would use an anchor
@@royalnavyyachtmaster well that's a bummer. I was getting pretty excited about trying that, because it just seems so much nicer than reaching down 10 ft., grabbing those things, especially when you consider that at that point I can't see a thing from the helm.

Let's say you wanted to put two separate lines on the buoy.... How do you get the second line through the buoy hoop? Oh...I've just worked it out....you have two separate lines already fixed at the bow and walk them both back to the stern...ha!...that puzzle kept me awake last night...and I don't even own a boat!!
Hi thanks for the question . Actually a little different than that.... I use the dinghy to get the second line attached .... even when I have the first line attached, there’s not a chance that I could get the second line through the eye from on board, 8 feet up in deck , with a boat hook ...... either that or tip the water taxi guy to do it 👍
Sailing in Croatia a lot, there is the wind called Maestral if the system is stable in the summer. Between 10 AM till 8 PM up to 20 kts.The thing is that you can easy loose your fingers on the cleat when the boat is caught with blow. After you stop you have aprox. 10 to 15 sec to secure it with a first rope before the boat start to move to one or the other side. When you start with thrusters to hold the position you blow the ball away, the only option is to use the prop wash if you have one rudder or you do it again. Speaking for big sailing boats with one engine....just be careful if the wind is more than 5 kts. You cannot do it with a heavy boat like the video shows.
We did the exact same thing in Komiža in July 2021. Except not single handed like you! That's the next challenge... Quick question, I note you approach the buoy with the wind from behind (judging by the other cat that was already on a buoy). Would you recommend upwind or downwind? We usually do it into the wind (like anchoring) but then we have someone at the helm to keep the buoy on the side while the 'deckhand' walks the buoy to the bow. Great channel btw!
Awesome thank you Stephan I appreciate the kind words. As you can see the wind was very light on this particular occasion but even with that said I think picking it up with the wind and Stern gives you more stability using the propellers as you’ll see anchor to hold you in position while you hook the buoy and then once you have it captured the wind blowing from the Stern will actually help you by blowing the boat away downwind as you set up the mooring Bridal across the bow cleats. Have fun see you in Komiza!
