  • The polar regions are perhaps the most photogenic on earth, with countless beautiful scenes presenting themselves every day. An expedition cruise to the Arctic or Antarctica is an opportunity to take some of the most stunning photos for your collection. You’ll have a chance to capture endless expanses of ice, beaches crowded with seals or penguins, sunsets over unbroken horizons, starlit skies, and even the majestic northern lights.
Shooting in the polar regions is unique for several reasons. One is that your equipment is likely to get wet at some point during your voyage. Also, the cold temperatures can make shooting with batteries difficult. In this video, John Bozinov, a photographer for Poseidon Expeditions, shares tips and tricks that will help you make the most of your picture opportunities. He also suggests the right photo equipment to pack for your polar cruise.
In each Poseidon Expeditions cruise, we offer a free photography program. Our expert photographer will be on hand to answer your questions and give advice, both in the form of on-board lectures and workshops onshore.

It's worth emphasizing that some camera equipment is built weather-sealed. OM systems cameras carry an IP53 rating if paired with their high-end lenses. Some other cameras may have this feature, but most don't. Two cameras is great advice because (1) you don't want to be changing lenses in adverse conditions, and (2) even modern cameras can fail. For the same reason, cameras with dual card slots are ideal, in case a memory card fails.

Thanks for the video. My wife and I were scheduled for a trip to Antarctica with Poseidon in Nov 2021, but the trip was cancelled due to Covid. We are now re-scheduled for Nov 2022. I shoot video with a Canon XF705. Hope to see you onboard in Nov. Bob

Thanks for this Video. It answers my question I have been asking about whether the extra weight of 150-600 is worth carrying to Antarctica. We are looking forward to our own trip in a few weeks.

Nice! I was wondering about which focal lengths to use.
So how do you become an expedition photog?
