The Roots isn’t a jazz band, they were the first hip hop group to add in a live band, in the early/mid 90s. What you have to remember about Tariq Trotter is that he been doing this for so long, and works so hard at it, he has a bar or verse for everything and every beat. Black Thought is #1 on my greatest MC’a of all time. Body of work, quality, and never strayed away from who he is. Never conformed to the masses, plus I’ve never heard a wack song from him since I started listening to the Roots back in 8th grade in 1999.
