When you heard him in this run in the big Chicago house, his ringing squillo at that time, (1980's) was very exceptional, among the very most I've ever seen in a live performance from a tenor, in over 63 years of opera going and I have seen most all the famous great tenors back then, from 1957 live on stage.
Sensational American Lyric tenor born in 1949, with a famous Cantor father Sidney Shicoff, he studied originally going into singing Cantorial music, but decided to become an operatic tenor, luckily for us and singing so many roles as well as acting them out on stage, his Hoffmann was one his greatest roles.
@ Opera Nostalgia , Nov. 8th and 10 June Anderson and Domingo as scheduled sang those two performances, however the one after this, (Nov. 4th the second show ) Neil did cancel that one with a cold he caught on the plane coming to Chicago, so a back up tenor sang that one, (Di Palo) but Neil S. sang all the rest of those scheduled, 7 more performances .
In house it was even greater, I was at most all the several shows he did. The ringing Squillo he had was the most amazing I've heard and on recording live or studio you get only a fraction of it! His emotion as for the words was also very great.
@Opera Nostalgia Consider Neil Shicoff had a bad cold for this opening night and radio brdcst. of the run, the Next performance he did cancel, so a another back up tenor did that one , but Neil sang the rest of those he was supposed to sing, that was 7 more of them. Spinto tenor Domingo sang the only two he was scheduled for.
He was singing here with a really bad cold and so he canceled the next performance , then he sang the remaining shows. They obviously posted this one because being the opening of the run as was the policy in Chicago it was Brdcst. on WFMT radio. I was at all of the several more he sang but no recording I know of exists with any of them, I saw him sing it in S.F. Calif in 1981 and it was simply outstanding .
this constant dauer-forte, dauertremolo, dauertear in the voice makes for very onedimensional not very engaging edgardo... can anyone explain, why the americans thought so highly of him?
He was loved even more so in Germany and Austria, he moved and lived there as he was so well loved in Vienna and was there "Leading tenor" for many years, yes and where he was an even bigger star then in the USA, and also in Russia, he sang in Italy also with success, this is one role and one performance, you can't judge any singer from this one performance alone, and it was thrilling in house, not seated at home breaking it down as some do with Corelli -- who had his habits in house, such as his famous scoop, but when you saw him he was thrilling and on recording less emotion but he was more perfection in his recordings and has said so in radio interviews on Zucker's show.
Absolutely phenomenal!

Because he is GREAT!
...because he IS American!!
